There is almost always a three-way final-GotY each year; the only exception I can think of since 2004 is 2011, which only had a overall-GotY and coincidentally featured LoZ:SS breaking the streak of mainline LoZ-games winning GotY here. think Zelda's berserk morning vote had something to do with 4chan. A
topic was posted on /v/ at 10:16 AM. It was between 10:35 AM and 11:00

There's a probable majority on this site (which is stuck in the 90's) who haven't played any game in the poll and are gravitating purely towards the Zelda name. We saw this last year -- that GotY-competition was basically a race to suck the least, which was later supported by nearly every related character's performance in last year's Character Battle. That said, I think this year shows Nintendo-fans on GameFAQs are preferring to go handheld than to other consoles. That'd be a certain type of Nintendo-drone, maybe, but Nintendo recognizes the 3DS is their hot ticket instead of the Wii U so this is a new change we'll have to prepare for in demographics. There's a fair chance we could see more handheld-GotY winners too as the PS4 and Xbone slowly build traction here (though the 3DS likely won't have a LoZ-game again soon). Also, to TLoU's credit, it'd crush anything from 2012. Fun-fact:
we've seen games shift from third to second (MKDS over GoW, Xenoblade
over ME3) and shift from second to first (SSBB over MGS4), but never

Just
looking at the numbers, it's fairly obvious that Zelda is getting a
huge assist from people who haven't played anything this year and are
just voting on series familiarity. The day to day % jump is astronomical
and not at all explained by LFF. I think we all expected this to some

That's
Nintendo in general, yeah. As already mentioned, SSBB gained on MGS4
despite the removal of FO3. Nintendo is often stronger when there are
fewer options. It's probably worth mentioning LoZ:LBW released during the prime time for GotY-winners, too. November's often been the sweet spot in the past, so maybe that's affecting things too. --- M E N: nominate Metal Man in 20XX! http://i.imgur.com/Dr4NAeq.png |
I'm
sure there's some of that going on, but I wouldn't undersell Zelda as
being just 'series familiarity.' It's still probably the most
well-received Zelda in a good decade, as far as fan response goes. You
take away Mario, on a Nintendo system owned primarily by hardcore fans,
and a couple of other Japanese-centric games I don't think the
percentage jump is too crazy. But yeah, I'm sure just being a Zelda game
against GTA and a new IP helps, too. --- banana |

well everyone expects it to lose easily to Link anyway in the final

TLOU could still take it, since it's bound to have more overlap with GTA than Zelda does. Then again, we said the same thing about MGS4/FO3 years ago and look where that got us. |
Zelda
has legit strength and is well-loved, but just looking at yesterday,
there was 29.65% left to spare. GTA got 1.53% of that. TLOU got 8.26% of
that. Zelda got 19.85%. That's just silly. TLOU might have a better chance tomorrow. Not because of any big overlap between GTAv and TLOU, I think, but simply because GTA being here too is going to make GameFAQs all indignant. There is nothing this site loves better than voting for Nintendo against western stuff. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |

Which

means that Zelda performs worse when there are more options (which is
something that we have seen in contests), while GTA tends to perform
better when GTA anti-votes get split (which we have also seen in

Zelda's jump isn't that absurd. It's GTA's non-jump that is more

Neutral on it I'd imagine but there's a lot of vocal hatred against TLOU because of its success. I don't know if you guys are familiar with their /v/ga's but the community driven shortlist saw it get enough nominations for "most hated game of the year". If you try to rally for TLOU on /v/ it's almost certainly going to backfire in your face, which may well have been the OP's intention. |

Looks
like 3DS will win System of the Year. The addition of the PS4 into
this poll has hurt the PS3. Even the Wii U still sucks badly even after
the release of Super Mario 3D World and Wind Waker HD. Wii U is just

had to vote 3DS. Aside from Netflix on PS3, I probably played my 3DS
more than any other system this year. Fire Emblem, Zelda, Etrian
Odyssey, Phoenix Wright. And some from previous years, too (VLR, Mario
3D Land, Professor Layton). So many hours spent playing games. |

Dropped off a lot after the board vote. Had an average night vote when GTA usually has a good night vote in the contests. The early morning vote was better than the night vote, but then GTA V drops off during the later part of the morning vote. ASV was a very good time period for GTA V for some reason, probably because TLoU has a below average ASV and Zelda dropped off a bit after that supercharged morning vote. So someone has to take advantage of TLoU and Zelda dropping off. GTA V drops off during the SNV. The Last of Us had a terrible board vote, but managed to recover a bit during the Power Hour. Night vote was the best time period for TLoU, with the early morning vote being a good time period for it as well. It performed worst during the late morning vote and the ASV, but recovered a bit during the SNV. Zelda had a good board vote when compared to TLoU. But compared to Zelda's final percentage, the board vote was below average. During the night vote, Zelda remained strong until 4:00 AM and then collapsed, allowing TLoU to make an attempt at a comeback. But Zelda instantly recovered when the morning vote kicked in and slowly gained more strength as the morning vote progressed. Zelda began dropping off near the end of the DSV (right before the ASV) and remained fairly stable for the rest of the poll. Kinda off topic but I just realized how many of the 243 characters from last contest I didn't play their game Freaking 112 and it does not include characters like Snake,Fox,Falco,Wolf,G&W,Pit,Ike,Falcon,Ness that I never played their game but I have enough of SSB hours so they count as "played" Does not count CATS because most people know him just from the meme and Master Chief because I played Halo online I thought I cut down the number alot because I played many games after the contest but...it's only down to 98 now As I played Bioshock 1-3,Assassin's Creed 1+2,VVVVVVV,Skullgirls and Mass Effect 1-3 I really need to play FFX and Xeno+Tales series to be a part of GameFAQs I guess |

Poorly
played, SB. It's easy to critique, sure, but follow your own precedent
so we can get a fair and controversy-free winner of GotY in a great
year for games. Dammit, it's 1-1 and they should still have a close
match! Gotta favor LoZ:LBW, but it's absolutely a mystery worth
unfolding. Happy to see my bold prediction of the 3DS winning SotY is happening. Dominant
performance by 3DS. PS3 would have to get the vast majority of the PS4
votes to win this one, high enough that I think 3DS would be winning
this one regardless, though it'd be close enough that rallies could
