...We had an extremely close Zelda/Pokemon match just last contest and Zelda didn't win it. And having not played any game in the poll, I think there's a good case that Link Between Worlds deserved the win. I think it's fairly obvious that X/Y would have won its GotY poll if it were a real contest match, though (and by the same logic Zelda would have won her match going away if it had been in a non-contest setting). Not sure I can agree that ABW 'deserved' the win - much as I hate to play Devil's Advocate against a successor to my second fave Zelda, it's really that in so many ways: riding off the coattails of LttP. X/Y is supposed to be the 'next leap forward for Pokemon' in comparison, so I dunno. I'd say I'd have expected more, but I'm sure it'll boost up to a more formidable state in an actual contest setting. --- Welcome to the League of Stickies. |
Saying
LBW is 'riding coattails' while X/Y is the 'next leap forward' is way
off base, I think. Not a good assessment of either game in any context.
Between the two, LBW will probably represent a shifting point in its
series. It uses a familiar setting to explore a bunch of new ideas and
design choices that are either new to Zelda or long forgotten in the
modern era. Certainly deserving of a win over Pokemon, or any game this

don't think either game strays very far from its predecessors. They
both have upgrades but I don't really consider either a big shift,
despite what people think about Zelda. And that's fine! They're both
great, fun games! Good games should be celebrated rather than torn down

For specifically Zelda vs. Pokemon instances, Spirit Tracks and Ocarina of Time 3D lost their GOTY polls to Pokemon and RBY crushed Majora's Mask in the 2009 contest despite the latter being considered the favorite going in. Extrapolating Link and Ocarina of Time's invincibility to mean other Zelda games can't lose is nonsense. Agreed - hell, in the "How would this character do in a contest setting" threads, I called out the notion that Dark Link would be a high midcarder by saying that being Zelda doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna be a powerhouse. The only way I can see him being that strong, personally, is getting votes by being a Link proxy. Here are our monthly vote totals last year for non-contest polls: January - 34358 (Minus the GotY polls, the average is 40067) February - 40052 March - 38303 April - 39852 May - 40006 June - 41234 July - 37621 (extremely limited sample size) September - 35053 October - 34995 November - 32469 December - 30916 Despite the huge increase in traffic from the Draven matches, we are having our worst vote totals ever. PS3's ownership on GameFAQs isn't that much higher than the 3DS to begin with.
