Link/Mario/Samus
is the best hope for Samus. The idea is to try to neutralize Mario's
SFF advantage within the Nintendo fanbase as much as possible by having
Link take up the Ninty fanbase votes. Mario only got 54% on her in the

And don't forget Sub-Zero upsetting Master Choke on the day of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's release. But there was Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, which is supposedly one of the best Pokemon games. Then there was Master Chief performing well due to Halo 3 hype. You guys still think Samus was overperforming because of Other M hype in 2010? She didn't seem to be a whole lot weaker this year. To be fair however, most of those "super-fortuitous release dates" games can just be blamed on overly high expectations. At the very least, hype backlash is the only reason I can think of for games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Brawl getting so much flak. --- I just beat Metroid: Other M, and while I loved the game it turned out to be completely not worth thinking over it for years. |

why on earth is Sonic still dropping? I guess it makes sense if this
site doesn't care much for newer Sonic games or even for Sonic games
period and he gets votes mostly off of recognizability or importance,
but man. You'd think after his recent resurgence that he'd be able to

A likely awful attempt to let you guys know I should never have made a big deal out of that game. But regardless of what I've said, I can at least begin to understand why MOM gets so much flak. With something like Wind Waker, Shadow of the Colossus, or even Super Mario Sunshine though? Nope. I think almost nobody on this site other than those who vote for every single pokemon regardless were still watching the anime by that point. Pretty much nothing Pokemon-related past 2001 or so is going to matter for RBY Pokemon. (And I'm including Smash appearances in that! Ivysaur is not going to be stronger than Bulbasaur.) Bulbasaur would likely be fairly strong, but Squirtle should be his ceiling. Though since Squirtle beat Cloud, that's not a bad ceiling to have. --- [NO BARKLEY NO PEACE] [NO raytan NO PEACE] |

Still
baffles me that Sonic and Mortal Kombat characters performed poorly
last contest despite the time between contests arguably being the best
years for those franchises in years. Makes me feel as if GameFAQs just feels like anti-voting both of them just because they're big again instead of being left to be '90s icons. Heck, you could argue the same for Mario. And then there's Samus doing well in spite of the time between contests being arguably the worst years for her franchise. Maybe GameFAQs users are just anti-voting everything that's big nowadays? --- I just beat Metroid: Other M, and while I loved the game it turned out to be completely not worth thinking over it for years. |

Almost certainly. 2010 hinted at this but it became really obvious this year. FFVII still receives the most antivotes, of course, but I'd say Link and Mario also heavily antivoted (someone else made the point that antivotes probably cost Link the match against Draven). Snake, Samus, and Mega Man avoid antivotes the best. If these contests were yearly like they used to be I would say that Pokemon would start to get antivoted badly once again, but most users probably still don't realise just how dominant they were this year. With CBs being so spread out now, it's harder for the average voter to recognise trends like the rise of Pokemon. In terms of contest knowledge, they're still stuck in 2005 where Link and Sephiroth always win like usual. --- Too much hope is the opposite of despair... An overpowering love may consume you in the end. |
After
probably way too much tweaking, I'm happy to present my first
post-contest mock bracket! This is built around avoiding SFF situations
and the idea that fights for first are more exciting than fights for
2nd/3rd. No new characters right now as I'm trying to extol the virtues
of more traditional formats... this is something of a hybrid. 12 hr
3-way fights for R1, 24 hr 1v1 for R2 onward. Assume Draven is retired until the bonus battle as reigning champion... and massive amounts of bracket fixing. something but then it would have been a pretty obvious unanimous pick
against Vincent instead of something debatable Maybe switch Ike and Vincent to get Ike/Morrigan/Ocelot and Frog/Leon/Vincent. Both of those setups seem pretty sexy, though Vincent+Frog seems a lot more favorable for Leon than Frog+Ike. I was sarcastically suggesting that Mortal Kombat and Sonic were getting anti-voted due to being big again, and thinking that it may hold some weight since: -Mario and FFVII characters all crapped the bed, which makes sense since those games are being whored out by Nintendo/Square nowadays. -Samus and Mega Man seemed to be not very far below their 2010 strength levels at absolute worst, despite the former receiving a huge flop in between contests while the latter infamously had all his games cancelled. The idea being that they were relegated to being mere memories of an earlier time as a result, and thus did well due to "not being big nowadays". --- I just beat Metroid: Other M, and while I loved the game it turned out to be completely not worth thinking over it for years. |

R1 matches I like: Ezio Auditore da Firenze Alucard Proto Man I'd like either Alucard or Proto Man to win here, but I dunno.... Vivi Bowser L-Block Vivi's true test! Doubt he wins this time, though. Auron Meta-Knight Rydia NOOOO! Give MK or Rydia a chance to win, for once! Mario Spring Breeze Dancin' Chester Meh. I'd rather see Tanner vs. Serious Sam or something. feel bad for CATS. His performance in the last contest indicates that
he's weak, but nowhere even near the bottom of the barrel in a field
this deep. Slot him where Groose went and you could honestly convince me
CATS stands a chance of being competitive in that one. |

GTA
IV got a lot of praise upon release... from the critics. Normal people
and GTA fans found it disappointing (even if it is/was a technical
marvel). I don't think GTA V will suffer the same backlash and will
