Yeah claiming Solid Snake will get weaker depsite new games is a tough sell because the main part of the name is "Snake", and a guy called "Snake" all the time who looks like Solid Snake is going to be the star for the near-future.

It'd be like if a guy named Strife who looked exactly like Cloud (except with an eyepatch) was the star of every post-FFVII Final Fantasy. There's no way that wouldn't help Cloud.

you can still make it happen square

Well, I'm curious as to if they can increase our votals. Doesn't look like it's doing anything so far though. But I don't know how long it's been on the front page. If it only just got there, then there's still potential for some chaos in this match if they anti-vote Link.

I'm believing Allen before a reddit mod, to be fair. Besides, Allen told us that he specifically asked for the "verified staff member" identity. He didn't get a reply. This mod's post makes no mention of that.

Snake making a run through Cloud/Samus would probably result in matches with wider margins than this one ends up at. Samus has never been close to being worth this much indirectly on Link and Cloud fell off the face of the Planet.

Setting Cloud and Samus up against each other I think would end in a significantly closer match.

There's a lot of variables involved now. If you put Mario in today, Snake has a good chance to win. Separated from this contest a bit? I think Link still takes with either Mario or Samus there.

#280 | Karma Hunter | Posted 9/16/2013 2:09:14 PM | message detail
Snake would be a decisive favorite putting Mario in the match today. Based on previous matches when he's leeched Link this would be a trivial swing.

Also, Snake getting his SSBB support sapped is just... not a valid theory anymore. Unless you want to strenuously argue he's our #1 indirectly, which I suppose I can get behind.

Welcome to the League of Stickies.
#281 | red sox 777 | Posted 9/16/2013 2:12:26 PM | message detail
It is not trivial. Link/Mario is pretty light LFF, and hurts Mario much more than Link. Zack went from 30% to 34% when we added both Mario and MMX, and Mario was the one fighting for his life. 4% around 33% is probably 6% around 50%. But then you take out MMX (probably worth at least 1% of LFF), and you just know Link will crush Mario much worse in a Link/Snake/Mario final than in a poll where he's in first by a mile and Mario is 50/50 with Zack. 53.5/46.5......honestly I'd give them both a 50% chance of winning.

The Zack match is a bit of a strike, I was considering more Link/Sephiroth/Mario/Vincent and the Battle Royale, where Mario obviously hurt Link a lot more than that. Link was the one being 'threatened' in both of those matches to boot, for kicks.
---
Welcome to the League of Stickies.
#284 | Karma Hunter | Posted 9/16/2013 2:23:17 PM | message detail
Also this happens to be pure, rallyless strength against a Link who's probably the strongest we've seen since 2008 thanks to Draven. If you introduce Mario to cripple Link and Snake fans sense blood in the water...

...I'm not willing to not decisively favor MGS fans in that scenario!
---
Welcome to the League of Stickies.
#285 | red sox 777 | Posted 9/16/2013 2:29:04 PM | message detail
Link/Sephiroth/Mario/Vincent looked normal. Quite possible Vincent drained Sephiroth just as much as Mario drained Link despite the lower percentage for Square in that match, because FFVII is a less broad fanbase.

Now the Battle Royale......wow. That is quite the jump from taking out Mario and his 11%. It's super strange.....maybe too strange. Cloud actually lost percentage when Mario exited the poll. That result is just so out of line with everything else we've seen that I'm tempted to ascribe it to the unique properties of the Battle Royale.

Yeah, I will say the SSBB stuff doesn't matter anymore. I had said I didn't think it mattered much at this point before the contest. It's just a natural part of his strength now. Today and the match against Pokemon should show that, I think.

But let's also not try to pretend Snake isn't also a beneficiary from Draven yesterday and the hype he had there. That was also probably the strongest Snake has ever been, this contest included, and some of that is naturally going o be present today.

#287 | Karma Hunter | Posted 9/16/2013 2:34:32 PM | message detail
Snake is the beneficiary of some goodwill, sure, but it's nothing compared to Link no longer having the same level of anti-votes dogging him as he did starting out this contest. Like red sox said, the Link Always Wins hatred found a release valve - heck, you can see it on the front page right now as you're voting in this match. Link Did Not Win.

That's ridiculously important, because the gap between Link and The Field has shrunk dramatically almost entirely on Link's weakness. If this had been a 1v1 contest without Draven and Link had dominated his way up to a Link/Snake finals taking place today there's a nonzero chance Snake would be in the lead right now.

#288 | red sox 777 | Posted 9/16/2013 2:36:13 PM | message detail | (edited)
Yes, Snake probably boosted as much as Link from fighting Draven, because Link is probably not still at his Draven match level today. He can't get back there unless he's the genuine underdog in a poll.

Maybe the votals tell the story of the strangeness of the BR:

6-way: 159,347
5-way (Samus out): 141,969
4-way (Mario out): 135,555
3-way (Sephiroth out): 151,369
1v1 (Snake out): 152,360

I really want to chalk the weirdness up to running the matches successively like that. Link was getting an unbelievable percentage of Mario and Samus votes....like 75% of Mario's and 100% of Samus's.

I'd say Link is just as much a beneficiary of all the Draven stuff, if not more. Imagine a contest without all the Draven stuff - Link is once again viewed as the undisputed king that people are sick of. Losing to Draven, an unwanted outside force, in a dramatic and 'heroic' fashion probably did more to reverse Link's decline than anything else possibly could have.

But we already saw a lot of that happen just a little while ago - and Link hadn't even lost yet. He galvanized the site against Draven and became a hero in the process. The jump from tyrant to hero benefits Link a lot more than Snake's jump from plucky underdog to pluckier underdog.

Nonexistent.

It's still a big benefit for Snake to come into the match, the next day, riding on all the support he had before. David Hayter, Twitter, almost taking the lead - he had everyone in his corner, maybe more than Link around here. Obviously that's just board 8, but we're a bit removed from Link's match with Draven and fresh off Snake's. That matters a lot. I mean, so does losing anti-votes, but at the same time, people are still certainly interested in another winner that comes through this site. Both of them benefited from Draven is all I'm saying. This isn't regular ol' Snake strength against super Link or anything.

But that's because Link was the underdog in that match, and Draven was this foreign force. When it's Snake, a character who, unlike Draven, tons of people from this site like, and Link is the favorite, they still expect Link to win and don't like that status quo.
