Extending a poll to resolve a tie isn't necessarily fair.

B and C are tied and A leads both by 1 vote as midnight hits.
The poll is left open to resolve the B/C tie and B gets a vote.
The poll is left open to resolve the new A/B tie and B gets another vote.

B > A > C despite A leading when the match should have ended.

This would never happen, though.

So, a list of what's changed since September 2nd:

Pro-Link:

No Shepard- worth an estimated 9000 votes.
No downtime- worth an estimated 2000 votes (it's more because Shepard is no longer in the poll)
1v1 bonus poll- the natural Gamefaqs votals will be higher based on past bonus polls

Pro-Draven:

League of Legends World Championship
Picture advantage

Holy crap these vote totals are horrific.

Not having a site alert really hurts this match, but we didn't have a site alert for Pikachu/Sora/Blue and even that match will finish with about 5000 more votes than today's match.

I actually considered that, but I mean... what do you do for Expert Challenge in a 2nd/3rd tie?

I think ideally you somehow just count the next vote for B/C and then just call it that way. It'd look really weird on the results though with an A/B tie though. Artificially give A an extra vote to make it "look" right since you were really just trying to break the tie for 2nd?

Match CXXI: (3) Draven vs. (1) Solid Snake vs. (1) Samus Aran

Previous Round

Draven – 45.07%
Mewtwo – 31.88%
Sephiroth – 23.06%

Solid Snake – 51.12%
Pikachu – 25.60%
Squirtle – 23.29%

Samus Aran – 38.48%
Mega Man – 33.32%
Pokemon Trainer Red – 28.20%

Analysis

Well it has been a long trek, but we are down to our final three characters. Like most finals on GameFAQs the winner is obvious, but instead of Link winning we have Draven who has been given the torch. The only way Draven loses is if the rallies do not show up. Rally fatigue likely will not happen after the whole mods deleting everything scenario from last round.

The fight for second could be quite interesting. I have always felt Snake would win in a close match, but Samus has given us something to think about. Overall her performance over the contest has been decent, but her performance last round and Mega Man’s performance against Pokemon could have put Snake in a bit of a disadvantage. Of course something weird could have happened in the all Nintendoish match of Samus/Mega Man/Red and we do not know if Pikachu/Squirtle is equal to Mewtwo/Pikachu.

I still feel that Snake will have the advantage in this particular match-up. The main thing is he has the reputation on the board that he would be the best bet to win and I feel if rallied Draven fans are going to betray him they would likely vote Snake over Samus.

While I dislike living in a what if world I do feel this would have been Snake’s best chance at winning over Link. Snake could have had a chance if the third opponent did not have so much strength, but what are you going to do.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Link > Solid Snake and Mario

charmander6000’s Prediction: Draven – 45.22%, Solid Snake – 33.33%, Samus Aran – 21.45%

If worlds gets draven 200k+ votes, then it will have warped around and became good in a morbid way akin to Link/Ganon's performance in rivals.
#471 | raginbull911 | Posted 9/14/2013 7:52:51 PM | message detail
I don't understand why the predictability of Draven winning makes the contest any worse than the predictability of Link winning. Because it was decided by an outside force? It seems a bit xenophobic to me. If anything the unpredictability of Draven from round 2 onwards was an exciting variable lacking from other "SPOILER: Link wins" contests. And based on Link's performance against Draven it's pretty obvious that Snake, Samus, Mega Man, Cloud, Mario, Vivi, Squall, Jak, GlaDOS, Chester, *insert Pokemon here* wouldn't have even touched Link. And then everyone would be crying that these contests are pointless because they're so predictable and Link wins all the time.

YMMV I guess; I just don't buy the whole "sky is falling" mentality.

#473 | xp1337 | Posted 9/14/2013 7:55:51 PM | message detail
With Link there was still debate over whether he'd lose to Snake with Mario (or Samus now, I guess) in the poll.

I mean, before Link/Draven caused Link to go crazy it was very much arguable!

I was sticking with Link because I just don't bet against that guy, but I'd say the chances of Draven losing are much lower than Link losing were. The Link that went against Draven though, yeah, that guy would have blown out Snake regardless, but I don't know if we ever see that Link if Draven just loses to MMX or something.

I feel I should clarify my post and mention that I'm happy someone from the new generation of gaming is doing this. While I do play League of Legends, I would have much preferred seeing someone like a Nathan Drake running the gambit and conquering everyone. But it's a refreshing changeup from the standard "everything PS2 and onwards sucks" that you typically see in these contests' results.

I also highly doubt there would have been as much outcry if a massive groundswell for Nathan Drake brought him to where Draven is, but because so many people have an irrational hate for League of Legends because of how popular it is, it makes for a good scapegoat and focus point for people's wrath.

Snake/Samus is at least somewhat debatable, although it's not likely to remain so once the actual match starts (one should put the other away soundly and get futilely bandwagoned against Draven). Link/Snake/Mario (well Samus if you presume Mario still can't make it in the absence of RallyFAQs) is interesting at least based on the 2k8 final because you can make an argument that Snake would have won 2008 with Mario replacing Crono.

Now, we may never see a Snake as strong as 2008 again, but that was the reasoning.

So I feel like the anti-Draven factions should rally both Samus and Snake. They'll have much more overlap than Draven, so spillover should help each other. The more people that hear about this poll, the better the (negligible) chance to take out Draven is. The best way to beat Draven is to get the entire non-LOL playing internet in on this.

I agree. I've been saying this for a while, but there's no need to look for people who would be predisposed toward voting for Snake or Samus because nobody likes Draven, and he'll lose by a large margin almost anywhere you put a link. In other words, we can just rally for the poll rather than a character.

Hypothetically, I think there are some caveats here. While Draven is likely to suffer the more broad you go with this, I do think it's still more optimal to focus on one over the other, particularly on "neutral-sites" that don't have a clear Snake or Samus advantage. However, I think you're right that in theory it's better to rally for Samus than to rally for no one.
