~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

To be fair, it's still possible Cloud is #2. For all we know, Squirtle's a good degree stronger than Link and Draven!

So if (big if) we get a situation in which we have Draven/Mewtwo/Sephiroth, Snake/Squirtle/Pikachu or Blue, L-Block/Red/Charizard - that's a total of 5 pokemon, 2 jokes and only 2 'proper' (I use the term loosely) characters.

Would this allow our saviour Snake to eat up all of the non-pokemon GameFAQs vote and win the whole thing?

Unless Reddit instantly deletes all rally threads there's no chance anyone but draven wins. Just compare the votals of Draven vs Link to every other match so far.

Only if you delude yourself into thinking Draven can lose from here on out. Even not being at full strength, he was more than a match for the strongest Link we've seen probably since 2006. Snake can't win out of those picks unless it's something like Mewtwo/Snake/Charizard for the finals, a ridiculously unlikely prospect.

Since Squirtle hit 392, there's no significant deviation.

Cloud was by far the favorite, so I call it an upset. But yes, this was foreseen as a real possibility since the match was arranged last round.

I currently live in a fantasy world where Draven flops now that he has taken down Link. A combination of apathy for yet another rally attempt, mass anti-vote to Snake and the MGS facebook page championing the poll.

Match CXIV: (6) Pikachu vs. (2) Sora vs. (12) Pokemon Trainer Blue

Previous Round

Pikachu – 47.07%
Crono – 40.42%
Magus – 12.51%

Sora – 49.36%
Gilgamesh – 31.50%
Yoshimitsu – 19.15%

Pokemon Trainer Blue – 47.14%
Nathan Drake – 34.07%
Mr. Game & Watch – 18.79%

Analysis

Some people believed Blue underperformed last round, but given that he was only about as strong as Fox and Nathan Drake has had Uncharted 3 since the last contest I feel he did about as expected. Maybe it was because all the Pokemon were over performing. Sadly for Blue he has a fellow Pokemon in this match which should relegate him to last place. I do however see Blue holding up well, he is a bit of a fan favourite and anyone using him as a proxy for Gary Oak would definitely vote for him over Pikachu.

Sora has been underwhelming over the past two rounds. Even with Kingdom Hearts 3 announced he has not risen to his previous strength. Still with two Pokemon characters in the poll it does give him the opportunity to take first and reach the final 9. Still with the way Pokemon have been performing I honestly would not be surprised if Sora loses this match.

I would take Pikachu over Sora in a normal match, but with Blue in the poll I feel Pikachu will be held back by too much. Firstly I do not see Blue folding like some of the other SFF matches we have seen. He has his own fanbase and even among Pokemon fans Pikachu is not very popular and people voting for Pikachu for the sake of voting for Pokemon could abandon him. Also rallying would be difficult as Blue is a more likely to get support or at least leech a lot of it from Pikachu.

If rSFF does exist this may be the best match to prove it. If it does and Blue finishes above Pikachu I doubt he would be able to catch Sora, he is weaker than Pikachu normally and if rSFF occurs I doubt Pikachu would be reduced to pathetic levels.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Sora > Pikachu and Fox McCloud

charmander6000’s Prediction: Sora – 40.35%, Pikachu – 38.43%, Pokemon Trainer Blue – 21.22%

A Cloud rally of any size or importance could actually still win this match for him. Squirtle rallies are resulting in a deadlock atm. A Cloud rally, could such a thing actually exist, would break that tie decisively.

well, the margin of vote is so small that of course he has a shot. this is distance that could theoretically be covered within 20 minutes.

but squirtle has been doing this for almost 22 hours now. exactly the same thing. at this point his rallies are bandwagons and people are willingly choosing to pick him over Cloud. if Cloud were to receive one monster push, he could win it.

as has been the case all match. possible, yes. realistic, not unless something major happens.

So with Squirtle most likely winning this, Charizard almost inevitably beating Mega Man/Zero, Pikachu or Blue potentially defeating Sora (I think it'll happen at this point despite the SFF, though it's the one I'm least sure about), Red being at least even money in his matchup against two Final Fantasy characters, and Mewtwo already through we're faced with the very real chance that we have 5 representatives not just from Pokemon, but freaking Pokemon RBY, in the Final 9. In a contest with 243 characters; many of them iconic in their own generations.

At this point, I refuse to take anyone who doesn't believe Pokedrones is a thing seriously. I've been hesitant to use the loaded term that is Pokedrones, but it's the best word to describe this phenomenon. If anything is ruining the contest -- and I'm quite enjoying it and don't think anything is, for the record, but if something is -- it's PokeFever, not Reddit, League of Legends/Draven, or Link allegedly being screwed over.
