Yes. He only needs to cut an average of 60 to tie this thing by the end. It's EXTREMELY unlikely to assume he'll maintain this torrid pace, but he could end up just winning. It's also very likely that he'll end up just losing by enough to make the 90 minute site shutdown an even bigger deal than it already is.

Link/Cloud always draws the votes, regardless of who wins. In 2003, recall, Cloud had beaten Link at votals pretty much every round- one of the signs that predicted his victory. As for L-Block, I'd credit L-Block for the elevated votals rather than Link. Link didn't even beat Cloud by all that much.

Link faced other Nintendo characters every round except Magus before the Cloud match in 2003, it makes sense that Cloud would outdraw him even without being stronger.

He can't. For one thing vote totals will die off slowly from now to the end of the match.

For another, the stuffer will wake up if this becomes truly threatening.

Match is over...though if Link can get this down to 2000 that would be very impressive.

If he gets it down to 1500 (highly unlikely IMO), people are going to go nuts because of the downtime issue.

Link/Cloud brings in the votes, but not like Link losing. I know our sample size is damn small because he never loses, but look at Link/Cloud 2k3 in the context of that contest. Closest competitor is, what, Mario/Crono 2k3, and then... Cloud/Sephiroth 2k3 (where Cloud was probably being revenge-voted to all hell). Same thing with L-Block/Link/Cloud/Snake, and then... today. Link has over 43,000 votes right now. Our last night match (Zelda/DK/Charizard) plus our last day match (Mario/Crono/X) comes in at just over 60,000 votes.

Link could come in close to our entire last day of votes by himself. I give up completely - he can't lose to a normal character, no matter how weak he's become.

With everything that happened there, it took Link exactly 1:50 to cut the lead from 4K to 3K. At that pace, he would need 5:30 left in the poll to win, falling 20 minutes short.

Oh this is gonna be good.

data the gamefaqs admin showed did suggest that while it could be a ddos, it could also not have been one. but many people believe that it was due to the timing of it - Link was cutting into votes hard at his best time, so he lost 90 minutes of his best vote time period.

for that reason, some believe that there was a ddos attack.
it COULD have been a really, really awkward coincidence. but either way, Link lost 90 minutes of votes he'll never get back.

Link/Cloud outdraws everything else in every year. 2003 had uncommonly high votals, so it was one of the highest drawing Link/Cloud matches. Plus, both Link and Cloud were absolutely beastly, both in percentages and for drawing votes. I'm not seeing any match in which Link pulled out hordes of reinforcements, except today. Which has excellent reasons for it.

Without the foreign threat of Draven though, Link would not have this rally power.

He was still the villain, and an unfavorable finals - Link/Snake/(Mario/Samus) would very likely have gone Snake's way.

Link went from the weakest he's ever been, to the strongest he's ever been, two hours into the X/Ryu match. Justl like that, those two hours supercharged his strength to heretofore unseen levels.

This. Someone did the numbers once years ago, and Link/Cloud 2004 was actually a bigger vote draw when compared with the rest of their respective contests.

2000 votes is bit of a stretch...1000 votes is a lock, something just below 1500 is probably our best estimate.
