miss the good ole days, where these topics were mostly rationale and
calculated discussions on contest strength and matchups, and not people
I've never heard of going out of their way to try and piss off as many
people as possible. I thought that's what virtually every other B8

The idea that Draven is going to gain any significant strength here because of Board 8's reaction never sat well with me. I mean, really? It's going to make the comments about the match a lot worse which is part of why I think it's been counter-productive (seriously, this place over the next 36-72 hours is going to just be so terrible). But it's not like Link was in this until all of a sudden Board 8 made people mad. The
stats topic has probably been the most chill place on the board for the
past few years. It's probably among the most popular, longest-running
topic series on the whole internet (seriously, 11+ years of history
now!), yet we don't care if an unknown newb makes the new topic. You go
back 7-8 years ago, and the place would be up in arms if the topics were
made by anyone but a longtime stats regular. Stats has mellowed out a
lot and is the best "place" to enjoy the contests imo. This match is

If
rallies aren't considered a part of a character's popularity, then what
is? All this talk about "natural strength" is fine and dandy, but I
think everyone in this topic would agree that strength can (and often
does) change, sometimes even within the same contest! I really appreciate what the stat regulars try to do. You guys try to get as clear of a read as possible on every character's strength level. It takes close looks at voting trends, the invention of numerous "factors" to explain anomalies, and even then it's sometimes not enough. What is popularity? In the context of these Character Battles, it's simply who gets the most votes in a match. You win matches until you're eliminated or you're the champ. The champ is crowned the most popular...........for the time being. This contest allows outside involvement/rallies, so you can't just simply label Draven as "not actually popular." Sure he may not actually be popular among the GameFAQs community, but the GameFAQs community aren't the only people who are allowed to vote in the matches! Like it or not, Draven is showing that he is popular among a certain population base on the internet. Anyone on the internet can vote in a Character Battle. Draven's strength may fade, zig-zag, or stay the same forever. Either way you slice it, he's popular right now in this Character Battle. He's getting the votes, and he hasn't been officially labeled a cheater yet. Anyway, those are my two cents. I love Character Battles, I love reading Board 8 topics (including this one), and I've been doing it since 2002, a few years before I even had this account (my 2nd one). I'm not trying to rag on anybody at all, and I hope you guys keep up the interesting discussion/analysis. |

hey, this is a far more electric atmosphere than I imagined. I wish
Ngamer would be able to throw up an impromptu live podcast because
there's definitely a bigger buzz around here than at any time since
Melee/Brawl. The result in 90 minutes might be obvious, but even still,

Agreed, this topic is still very chill for the most part. Getting your entire site's opinion drowned out by the dregs of friggin' Reddit will definitely ruffle feathers though. There will be some spillover bitterness until the contest ends, though after tomorrow it should be toned down substantially. Although watching Draven destroy Snake might cause a bitterness spike, as unlike Link Snake is pretty universally beloved over here. ZFS posted... Yeah, both sides will be pretty rotten here. open for all times (or until the offseason when we get one post per day
