SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Eh, Squall didn't really get a chance to show his stuff in the first contest. A first round match against Snake isn't a favorable position for him to do well in.

Not that there's any way to prove it now or anything, but yeah. Squall is still probably about as strong relative to the next strongest character in his game than just about anybody in the contest. Definitely more true now than it was in 2002, but there was probably still a big gap even then.

How much would you expect that split would be, though? Percentages can mean a lot. Also it's a day match, which you'd expect to favor Mario over both of these guys really heavily.

I don't think it'll be very significant, but Crono seems like a beneficiary in this setup. After this round, I'm not gonna pretend to have the inside track here, though. GameFAQs could go any way they want at this point, doesn't seem based in much reason, until we try to come up with some!

I think debating overlap in the bonus match is silly. All three of them have significant overlap with each other and I'm betting most of the site has played all three of their games, and they all have significant ties to the 16-bit era. If anything, Mario being the only one relevant outside of that era has to given him the advantage.

Mario's 'relevance' pretty much amounts to nothing here. GameFAQs and modern Mario aren't best friends.

I do think Mario wins tomorrow. Don't think it means anything, stat-wise, but I would think that even a weaker Mario can handle Crono and MMX, regardless. But then, Vivi.

Well, we already know Mega Man gets Nintendo SFFed all the time. I understand Crono has similar ties, but there's no denying he's more independent than Mega Man (and X, presumably). Even at his lowest levels there's no f***ing way Crono gets blasted to less than 33% of the vote against Link.

I would guess most people didn't even play MMX games after 3, so he's still probably pretty heavily associated with Nintendo more than not. Two SNES platforming characters strike me as having more noticeable overlap versus the Square RPG guy.

Eh, MMX still got blasted last contest. It's just that Link was much weaker back then. As for Mario... I think he did SFF Mega Man last contest, at least a bit. His strength was just somewhat obscured by that SFF.

But don't get me wrong, I only expect MMX's votes to favor Mario, like, 60/40 or thereabouts. The day match will arguably hurt Crono just as much as MMX helps. If Crono can actually pull the miracle and beat Mario he's got a solid argument for being stronger than him 1v1 this year.

Well, I expect Mario to win. If he comes close to dropping it or actually loses that *does* make other Mario characters look bad. And yes, that includes Big Boss, but that is perhaps to be expected. If Mario was pegged too high in 2010 that means BB was pegged too high back then as well. He probably had to catch a nice MGSV hype boost in that case just to be competitive with Luigi.
