What games from the 80s are really good? Most I can think of is Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. All of which seems like they could fold against most games from the same series that came later.

Games from the 90s, the strongest era of all. Say whatever you want, SMB is not dropping a match to Sunshine. LoZ takes Skyward Sword without even breaking a sweat. Final Fantasy wastes any game made after FFX.

The next tier is a threat, too. How many GotD games can Tetris beat? A lot, I'd wager.

And that's before you even get into the 90s, where the entire argument becomes a joke. I can think of ten games off the top of my head from the 90s that would completely dismantle Brawl, in a not-even-close affair.

I'm not convinced of SMG > SMB - Galaxy's strength has always been soft in every match it's been in, to the point where it's been thoroughly embarrassed in many a match against underwhelming opposition. But it matters not, because big bro SMB3 would do something like quad SMG anyway.

Well yeah there's plenty of games from the 2000s with strength - that's what GotD was all about. Can't compare to the 90s, but some of them can still hang around.

But the main point is that old games > new games, and quite decisively. Heck, GotD's winner, even though it was my favorite game in the bracket, is a 90s game in everything but technicality.

I hate to break it to you, but FFVIII did well in the 2009 Games Contest. Doubled FFIX in an SFF match, whoo!

-LusterSoldier- posted...
Also, this site doesn't value the older games as much as the new games. Without division by eras, games from the 1980s and 1970s are almost unlikely to get into the contest. We've seen polls for the best decade in games and the best console generation and this site doesn't have any respect for the NES generation and anything before the 1990s.

But we don't need them. Most of the games in the first two divisions in the 2009 Games Contest were total wastes of space.

Actually I considered MGS, but I'm hesitant to even take it over Melee. I can't get a sense of how strong exactly it is beyond "below RBY"

which could just mean I'm dumb and don't know how the MGS fanbase works - I'm guessing it would throttle all of its sequels?

Also, while the upper crust of our strongest games are old games, the majority of our midcard games are newer games. There's a big gap between strong old games and weak old games.

MGS1 is the clear favorite among the fanbase, yes.

I think the MGS hierarchy nowadays would go pretty clearly 1 > 3 > 2 > 4 now.

also I doubt Travis' cuts will hold up once the 250 vote barrier is in danger

While it's something that I've had to harp on since 2004, in a word - YES. MGS is the most beloved, has the highest playrate, has a remake, is the 90s game (THE NINETIES FACTOR), and at this point I doubt you'd find more than a handful of the fanbase that thinks the other games are stronger.

Going along what you raised, MGS can be compared to its sequels like RBY is to its sequels, to use a rough approximation. You get a lot of vocal appreciation for G/S/C and the R/S/E paradigm shift and stuff but at the end of the day, the glory goes to the first.

I'd take Brawl in a Smash rematch because it was 50/50 last time but Brawl would be a huge favorite this time and that's enough to give it the edge. Brawl, despite being a much worse and less fun game, had a bigger cast and some semblance of online play, and that sufficiently classifies as "superior" to enough people.

It's not that people are dumb, it's just that they're... I dunno, not as smart as me.

If you view TP as being perceived as at least partly a Gamecube game, then Brawl, which was the most hyped game of the century on this site, is the only superstrong game from the Wii. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 being strong, but not elite, makes sense in light of Skyward Sword's showings.

MGS3's problem isn't so much people hating on it (though it does get that), but that it came out late in the PS2's life cycle and a lot of people didn't give it a chance after MGS2. People used to point to MGS2's sales as an edge over MGS1, but never stopped to take into account that it got those sales in large part because of how legendary Metal Gear Solid was. MGS3 had the drop off after a lot of people were turned off by MGS2.

MGS has the primacy, the playrate, the near universal respect by the fanbase... I mean, heck, who likes any of the MGS games and simultaneously doesn't like either MGS or TTS? Do they even exist?
