i dunno, that just seems like a weird thing to say. like, would you be upset that Squall winning the division has to result from Tidus losing? he already lost, and could have never beaten Squall anyway.

My suspicions proved correct - the anime girl would not go down easily. Indeed, Travis, who once got 30% on Zelda directly, loses to her. Kratos is held below 50%, ruining my oracle after I bumped him up 3 points (I did at least deduct them from Travis, so I doubt it changed much). He looks he might well have fallen off in the meantime, which wouldn't be too surprising - Uncharted seems to be Sony's big series now.

Round 1, Match 75

(9) Red Bird
(10) Mike Haggar
(19) Jill Valentine

This match was somewhat debated before the contest, but I have never thought it possible that Jill would struggle. For a start, she's pretty strong, comparable with the likes of Ocelot and capable of getting 32.5% on Samus straight up - even jokes with proven pedigree like L-Block or the WCC would probably lose to her. More importantly, I can't see the Angry Birds icon having significant appeal here - this is a site that trades on nostalgia, and isn't particularly accepting of even modern games that are popular like CoD, never mind hyper-casual stuff.

Let's see, Mike Haggar... he's been in a poll before, though it wasn't a contest-related one. He lost to Samanosuke from Onimusha. Okay, going with Red Bird.

Bracket: Jill
Expert: Jill > Bird > Mike
Oracle: Jill Valentine - 65%; Red Bird - 22%; Mike Haggar - 13%

Total Character Battle wins by FF game (includes 2nd place finishes in 4-ways and all the LOL side contests):

FFIV – 0
FFV – 2
FFVI – 8
FFVII – 101
FFVIII – 19
FFIX – 9
FFX – 18
FFXII – 1
FFXIII – 0

That's right. Squall by himself carries FFVIII to 2nd place.

All hail

Yeah, all those wins it racked up from the first Games Contest and GotD (neither of which FFVIII was in) would carry X to 2nd pretty easily. Plus, it went further than FFVIII in the 2009 Games Contest anyway.

Yeah, that's true. A win by Rikku ties it up, and unless Auron somehow loses next round or Squall somehow wins in round 3 or loses to Missingno, it should stay tied.

The difference is that FFX got those wins from 5 different characters as opposed to 1.

But to be fair, FFX characters have gotten a lot of rough draws in their day. They really should have more total wins than they have considering all five of those guys are decent midcarders or better.

Whoa, I think anyone taking Jill in the mid-60s might be expecting a little much. Her competition isn't absolutely laughable. Haggar has been at least as relevant as Poison in the last few years, and she did quite well (Poison has the more appealing design, but Haggar got the bigger game in MvC3 and has more of an internet meme presence). I really doubt someone like Haggar will be held to the same percentage as the Francis York Morgans of this contest. And Red Bird, while casual through and through, is still the fact of a franchise that's been played by a vast majority of people on this site. The one GameFAQs poll about Angry Birds indicates a 2/3rd playrate, and I presume it's only gone up in the year+ since then. Angry Birds might have a higher playrate than stuff like Halo and CoD. Her competition is actually pretty good considering some of the fodder in this contest - hell it might easily be stronger than the crap Kratos is up against today. If she shoots for anywhere near 60%, I'll be ecstatic.

I think Haggar is going to bomb. Poison has non-game related reasons that Haggar doesn't to do as well as she did (and after seeing how poorly Booker and Big Daddy did, it may not be as good as we thought at the time anyway).

No I mean it's literally Luster's fault ? Block is in the contest.

I have been trying to get ? Block into the contest since 2008. I knew ? Block would have some good strength after what it did to L-Block in that bonus match in 2007. I tried in 2008 and 2010 to get ? Block in and failed.

I really do want to see Goomba in a contest, but that will have to wait until the next Character Battle. Slime's performance gives me hope for Goomba doing well.

Also, this site doesn't value the older games as much as the new games. Without division by eras, games from the 1980s and 1970s are almost unlikely to get into the contest. We've seen polls for the best decade in games and the best console generation and this site doesn't have any respect for the NES generation and anything before the 1990s.

Assuming we have another games contest with 243 games and 9 divisions, Bacon could create a bracket not divided by eras by taking the top 27 games from each of the following time periods:

1972-1988
1989-1991
1992-1994
1995-1997
1998-2000
2001-2003
2004-2006
2007-2010
2011-2014

That is, the top 27 nominated games from 1972-1988 would get into the contest, but they wouldn't be put into one division. Then you'll have the top 27 nominated games from 1989-1991 get into the contest. Repeat the same thing over and over for the other time periods.

I would much rather we didn't get anything from before the mid-80s, to be quite honest, aside from the five games from that time that actually do decent like Pong and Pac-Man.

Do we really need to see Galaga or The Oregon Trail being a lock for last place at the expense of something actually interesting?

The old games with any strength (that is to say, get away Galaga fanbois) completely waste new games, every time. It's the new games that need to worry about the old guard, not vice-versa.
