Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1109

I don't think Cecil could have beaten Red with Wario in the poll, but Wrex...I don't know. Wrex just stands out so much from the Nintendo characters.

Almost all characters have some level of LFF between them (with exceptions like L-Block 2007, the most LFF-free entity we've ever seen). However I can't see Wrex having much LFF with Red and Wario at all.

So Wrex might have a decent shot at pulling off what would have been one of the biggest pre-contest upsets. Does anyone in the BOP or Guru have Wrex to round 3?

Team Rocket Elite posted...
Well, I guess the fact we supported Missingno. in our brackets by such a large margin is also the reason Missingno. didn't lose.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of this. You're right, Missingno could have lost without the surge of bracket votes.

Once again proving that if you think a match is going to go 50/50 (not just an upset pick), always go with the board if they're heavily favored! It's not sexy, but it's sensible.

To be honest, Wrex stands out quite a bit in this match as well. Two old school characters that have been revitalized by recent appearances in franchise fighting games. And they are both light-oriented characters, as one's an angel and one's a paladin.

Granted, that's not quite the level of overlap that Red and Wario would have, but I think it is worth mentioning when you've got something really close to a 30-30-30 split.

Mass Effect is going to stand out in most matches on this site that aren't against, like, Darth Revan or something. It's one of those rare franchises that has strength with practically zero Nintendo/Square connection.

Well, if Mass Effect can overperform by being the third party in a Nintendo vs. Square match, then that's another nail in Aries's coffin next round.

Damn, Wrex ended up going on a f***ing rampage. He has to be one of the overall stars of this round.

Kind of weird how the only ME character that looked a little wonky this round was... Shepard. I know some may make a case for Mordin too, but I just think Epona's been underestimated by many.

Can't WAIT to see how Magikarp does, this is the match I've been waiting for. I've wanted to see him in these contests for years.

Shepard's FemShep pic probably hurt him/her a touch. He should easily have a MaleShep picture if the picsmith rumblings are to be believed, and as long as he can beat Aeris he'll have more than proved himself.

*raises hand*

I should have gambled on Wrex in my Expert-picks, too...all I did for this match was take Pit for last, but at least I get a point.

Good show by Wrex though! This is encouraging for the ME-characters to get their first impressive win; Shepard couldn't double Captain Olimar with a FemShep-pic, Garrus impressed against Sub-Zero but still lost, and Mordin was hoofed to death by HorseFAQs (move over, DogFAQs).

I skimmed to catch up, so forgive me if I missed the meat of this discussion: ME-fans, how do you expect Wrex and Mordin to compare?

Speaking of FFVII spoilers, does anyone else feel that, back in the day, Seph/Aeris could have been a massive rSFF situation? I'm talking the biggest potential rSFF in contest history. I mean, no one was touching Clinkeroth in 2003-6, but I think 1v1 Aeris could have pulled in a shockingly good number on Sephy.

I mean, how could someone vote against Aeris for the person who literally murdered her in cold blood? I think a lot of people could have felt terrible voting for Sephiroth over her and just voted for her, even if he destroys her indirectly.

This site is edgy enough even back then to actually have Sephiroth 85-15 Aeris to have it reflect the plot. Kingdom Hearts and the whole DARKNESS bs drawing in the emo crowd also helps.

Argh this match.

Thought of putting Wrex over Pit pre-match but figured it was one of my classic stupid decisions that costs me points, so I didn't. Only would have saved me 2 though because no way I'd have taken Wrex > Cecil too.

I'd be happy that my bracket has this (and Wrex into R3 so I can still probably blow it) but my bracket is dead anyway!

That just seems kind of silly to me. There has to be a moratorium on a certain point where spoilers are so old and so well known that they shouldn't apply.

And don't get me started on the internet fascination with attempting to protect everything and everyone from spoilers. The worst is on Dota forums where people get mad for discussing match results without marking spoilers.

What other sport in the world or spots network blocks out game results to "protect" people from "spoilers"?

Turtle - Eh, that's probably not giving Karp enough credit. I expect him to maim Geno and put up around 37-38%-ish on MM.

If Missingno. and Magikarp had switched spots, Karp would have been a wrecking ball. I highly doubt Tidus would have even been able to make it competitive.

That's what my gut tells me, anyway. But I really don't think it's illogical or anything. Karp is definitely cut from the same cloth as Missingno in terms of nostalgia value, but frankly, Karp is probably the more recognizable/funny of the two. Plus, unlike Missingno, Karp's got the fresh-joke factor going for him.

It's just a shame none of that will likely matter against Mega Man. MM is just too likable to let a joke character take advantage of him too much.
