Yeah Charizard in the finals doesn't work for Cloud/Snake. The bandwagoning power is immediately sundered, and Link skates by with an easy win.

Link v Cloud/Snake v Mario funnels all of any potential bandwagon into a single entity.

To put it another way, it's what *could* have happened if Zack had beaten Mario (so close) and Vincent had beaten Crono (so even closer). That leaves us with a Link/Zack/Samus/Vincent semifinal match, with FF7 knocking each other out to give us a Link/Samus/Snake/Cloud final... with hypercharged bandwagon Snake.

what could have been ;-;

So I was just spacing out and realized something I really, really want to see.

36 days
24-hour matches
Noble Nine 1v1 round-robin

It could be set up so that everyone has three days off in between matches to avoid voter fatigue, but it would be our best tournament ever. The only downside is that Crono needs to gain strength first or all of his matches won't go so well for him.

It would solve just about all debates and would be tons of fun to watch. It's never going to happen, but who else here thinks it isn't an entirely terrible idea?

There's only a few of the Noble Nine that we'd really like to see in those matches. Link in virtually any of those is pointless. So is Crono, barring a serious rebound for him.

There's some characters that I'd love to see matched up against a slew of Nobles. Sephiroth has nonzero chances against any Noble outside of Clink, and people probably only count out Sonic and Crono against him. A similar principle for Snake from Cloud down to Mega Man. But you can do that in a normal bracket... not this one where so much of the Noble Nine is totally wasted, ack.

Granted about Link, but some of his matches might be interesting. I can't be the only one who wants to see where Snake and Sephiroth stand against him heads-up. Crono might even may able to do better against him than Sonic or Samus because of SFF. Even if some outcomes aren't ever in doubt, there would be some serious intrigue in every match.

Snake sorta because he might be able to put together a bit of a bandwagon if people get really sick of Link during the course of this thing. Even then ehhhhh. Sephiroth has been matched up against Link many times, I really don't think we need to see that too much.

That's pretty much the entire point of this contest without Bacon being explicit about it. It's rigged for Link to lose! If Mario does make the finals as anticipated and Link still wins without a sweat he really *does* need to be retired. <_<

Although if Snake does end up beating Link with Mario in the poll I say we should have a 1v1 bonus poll between the two, at least to validate the true most popular character of the contest.

Then Snake wins anyway

A toguh match that where were unjustifiedly confident in the winner. While the top tiers have a prediction percentage in the 80s and 90s, the middle tiers are only around 40. A few votes different and we get completely destroyed. Well, I guess the fact we supported Missingno. in our brackets by such a large margin is also the reason Missingno. didn't lose.

2 people fell off the Top 49. MZero11 and AsurasKordoth did not have Missingno. winning.

1 person got it wrong and survived. Bran_Stark also did not have Missingno. winning.

50th place for the previous 7 rounds turns out to probably be Jay Solano. >_>

For the record, Megaman is still the favorite to win in this match, right? Nobody is actually expecting the magikarp upset...right?

Some people are banking on Magikarp, and I'd feel like 99% confident instead of 90%~ confident in Mega Man if he had on his typical "I'm about to blast fodder" picture instead of this weird SSB4 thing. Though maybe it'll help via hype, who knows.

Mega Man has 99% of our brackets, if that's what you're asking, and probably that much in Expert too.

S***. At least you came damn close to going "perfect" on that one. Though I don't think many people predicted this performance.

Also, once again Cecil loses another match, though at least these days he's going down looking decent. And at least it's a pretty good character like Wrex.

So, Knux or Wrex?

Magikarp deserves 3rd place. Literally the worst Pokémon of the original 150. I remember spending way too much time using Splash, thinking that it just had a really low hit rate or something. I'm feeling really good about it falling on the fodder side of the joke/fodder split.

I never noticed how much support Creeper had in the Guru contest. A fair number of the top tiers get this wrong despite Wario taking the match pretty easily. The top tiers still do a lot better than the middle tiers. I'm a bit surprised Wario's bracket support was so bad. He might not have been the bracket favourite by very much.

6 people fell off the Top 49. t_kizzle, ZenOfThunder, AAAMitsugi, Biscuit__, Calintares and Flock_Masta_P did not have Wario winning.

6 people got it wrong and survived. Former third place Fr0zoN, Hagankefs, metaIslugg, Rex915, KCGemini and KommunistKoala also did not have Wario winning.

Garrus got unlucky

Yeah, he did. Sub-Zero is a very strong midcarder, he's broken 45% on Sonic in multiways. With a better draw Garrus could have done a lot of things in this contest.

There was no vote-in...

But the real answer to the shenanigans point is that it wasn't against Crono.

I think he's using the 1-6-9-2-5-8-3-4-7 ordering for 1 seeds that we see for the high seeds in each division (which has been pretty common). Not sure if that's based on nominations or... anything at all, though.

People are massively overrating what Smash meant for Samus. She was one of the most popular characters of the 8-bit era. And Super Metroid was legendary in the 16-bit era.

She also has an incredibly badass design that no doubt gives her a huge portion of her strength. If she was Generic McDudette her games and Smash would not make her strong. Her design is absolutely vital to her strength.

Smash helped her, but no doubt in my mind that even without Smash she would have been a top 15 character in 2K2.

Well it doesn't take a genius to figure out the bottom 3 are Crono, Megaman, and Sonic. With Crono being the obvious bottom choice.

Barring some weirdly miraculous power shift anyway.

Match LXXIII: (1) Mega Man vs. (18) Geno vs. (27) Magikarp

Previous Contest

Mega Man – 2010
63.04% against Cid Highwind
61.66% against Zack Fair
72.15% against Ryu Hayabusa
41.62% against Mario

Geno – 2010
35.19% against Ness

Magikarp – N/A
N/A

Analysis

Final division, we are almost there. With the announcement of being in the next Super Smash Bros. Mega Man could be seeing a boost to his strength. It will likely not boost him as much as Sonic got in 2007, but at least people are talking about him. Mega Man’s path for this contest can be interesting in the third round he will have a LFF match where he might lose then should he win he gets the advantage with two Nintendo characters where he could steal the show.

For a third contest in a row Geno is stuck against Nintendo competition. While this is not as bad as Bowser or Ness it would be nice to see him in a fairer match-up. Regardless Geno has always shown to be weak and with Super Mario RPG getting older and Nintendo and Square fighting over his rights he will likely get weaker.

If the 27 seed poll was never done before this contest I feel people would not care about Magikarp, but it is hard to ignore him pulling 41% in a nine-way poll. There is a few things that should be considered though, for one all of those characters are weak while Magikarp probably has some strength and second Magikarp is the most recognizable character by name and without pictures or stating what game they come from it is not surprising that an average voter would not recognize any of the other characters.

While Magikarp will not rank among the top Pokemon characters I do feel he will get a lot of joke vote support. Sadly Mega Man is just too strong of an initial competitor and I feel like with Mario characters Mega Man is hard to rally against, especially since he is among the strongest characters with the fewest haters.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Mega Man > Magikarp and Geno

charmander6000’s Prediction: Mega Man – 52.75%, Magikarp – 32.17%, Geno – 15.08%

Also from past experience Mega Man and Crono are the least nominated noble nine characters, but with so few nominations anything is possible.

Edit: A 2 seed in a non-2002 contest, I should clarify. Link was a 2 in 2002. <_<
