Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1099

I don't think meant Yuna. He probably meant stuff like Catherine beating Vaas. Hell Catherine would probably beat quite a few of the pathetically weak Western characters we've seen in this contest. Yu and Chie could too.

Wait Chief seems to be rising!

He's been rising for most of the poll, he'll probably get to occasional cut and will easily finish closer to Yuna than Claire.

Auron went from beating Sonic easily to almost losing to Kratos because Seph turned up. FFX/FFVII SFF can be some of the most brutal around:

I... see little reason why that shouldn't be the favorite unless Tifa can SFF Yuna hard. Unless Pyramid Head and Nook have gotten ridiculously stronger, Dragonborn looks to be pretty bad fodder.

Despite both being female characters from Final Fantasy games, I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of SFF going on. The characters are very, very different, both in the way they're designed and the way they're written. In addition, there's not a whole lot of overlap between the FF7 and FFX fanbases. Almost any times I've seen a people discuss their favorite FF games, almost nobody marked FF7 and FFX on the same list.

This is just stupid

Would Master Chief lose to any of the following characters?

Altair
Peach
Gordon Freeman
Terra
Albert Wesker
KOS-MOS
Crash Bandicoot

He'd probably only win against crash peach and wesker, and kos-mos might upset him.

Yeah I just read up on his contest history. This wouldn't be the first or even second time he ended up shaving a crapload of percentage from a Square character's margin of victory.

But yeah, he is now officially Master Choke. Master Chump. I dunno, something like that.

Seeing Master Chief flop is funny though.

Despite The Xbox and Xbox 360 selling poorly in Japan, the Halo series is quite popular over there. While not insanely popular as it is in the west It is popular for an Xbox game there . In fact Western games as a whole have been becoming more popular as of late in Japan.

"The Elephant's Foot", a formation of reactor core lava in Chernobylnote which was so radioactive, just looking at it would kill you on the spot. Like the classical Medusa, a heroic Russian physicist risked his life to journey into the bowels of the reactor to take pictures and find out what was going on down there; he had to use a mirror to take pictures of it from the adjoining hallway. Why did he "volunteer" to do this? Because (a) he was old enough not to worry about inevitably dying of cancer from background exposure (which he did later; they all did) and (b) the robot they sent to take photos of the reactor core lava had its circuits fried due to radiation, while a human could move quickly through the same hallway as long as he did not look into the open doorway itself.

It's probably for the best to take a lot of things you read on tvtropes with a grain of salt.

GameFAQs Japan does not represent overall Japan that well, for one thing they don't like Nintendo very much.

The Metroidvania genre is hugely popular in the West, but only a niche genre in Japan. In addition to Metroid and Castlevania themselves, games like Blaster Master and Cave Story have also been subject to this trend.

The Legend of Zelda is on the list of "Japanese games better known outside of Japan", as of the 2000s. While Ocarina of Time was as much of a best-seller as anywhere else, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess in particular had disappointing sales in their homeland, despite Famitsu giving Wind Waker a perfect 40. Shigeru Miyamoto even commented on it once, saying the West apparently has a bigger preference for these types of games than Japan does.

While Mario is the poster boy for video games everywhere, his Video Game 3D Leap wasn't as popular in Japan (for one, the Sega Saturn kept outselling the Nintendo 64 for a long time there). New Super Mario Bros Wii outsold Super Mario Galaxy within just 3 days of its Japan release.

Similarily, the Mario RPGs have done much better in the Western markets, selling around a million copies in North America alone, while they barely break 400,000 in Japan. This may be why the character Fawful, who became something of an Ensemble Darkhorse in America due to his Intentional Engrish for Funny translation, was made the main villain of Mario And Luigi Bowsers Inside Story.
