There was no reneging because the unilateral statement, "I'll close my account if that happens," does not constitute a bet. A one-sided declaration is not a binding contract.

Yeah the only bet he made was Mega Man > Snake and only if Zero was not in the match so it became void.

Pyramid Head has had nothing but terrible games/a terrible movie/a temporary theme park ride since 2007 though

at least Nook has recency and time to build up a sizable fanbase, as well as sore thumb factor

I wouldn't be surprised if P Head still wins but I'm finding it hard to justify taking him

Man, I can remember our discussions about Link/Samus SFF in 2003, and that least squares regression showed Link boosted by about 3.5% in 2004, but I can't remember what matches happened 3 days ago. So it's not that surprising I can remember stuff from 2008.

Yuna might have gotten SFF'd a bit there, but I think this'll be the weakest Chief we've seen since 2003. Xbox's stock is lower than it's been in years, and he'll suffer for it.

I'm kinda surprised Yuna's the favorite, too, but probably not for the same reason you are!

Board 8 tends to side with Chief in debated matches even though he hasn't really merited the benefit of the doubt (Chief/Subby, Chief/Hayabusa). The only time he pulled through in a close match was when he was facing the most notorious choker of them all in DK. So I'm kinda surprised they went Yuna here! I was expecting to have another "upset special" by picking Master Chief to lose, but maybe B8 is finally learning!

As far as the board's perception of Chief, you're only as good as your last match in these things, and boy did Chief stink it up last time.

I have Master Chief winning in that match.

I really don't see him losing with Halo 4 going for him.

In other news, Halo is going to go the way with making shovelware on Xbox One with Halo Party. Just a matter of time.

still wouldn't be surprised if he lost though

Old/niche RPG characters boosting could be a bad sign for Chief, with the low votals and shifting demographics someone as casual as him and tied to the rise of the modern FPS wave will probably only fall.

Then again, it is possible that as he gets older/less relevant and Halo becomes more nostalgic he could make a comeback, but I don't think it'll be enough against Yuna, especially since it doesn't seem as if FFX has deboosted and there was quite a gap between them in the stats last time.

Leaning towards the second theory, I think he'll give Yuna a fight especially given the day match + multi-option poll.
#438 | PSU_Jer | Posted 8/7/2013 4:32:46 PM | message detail
I went with Yuna, figuring Chief's strength has always been correlated with the perception of the Xbox brand, and it's near an all time low.

Are people thinking Claire will hurt Yuna? Is there any history of fan base overlap there?

not only the perception of xbox brand is all time low but Halo is less relevant as a franchise (Halo 4 didn't generate a fraction of the hype Halo 3 did) , this will be a very weak MC, Yuna should have no trouble with him

I went with The Chief and haven't looked back. New Square looking like crap aside, Chief has had Halo 4 since last contest, and I don't think "Xbox backlash" or whatever you're calling it actually exists. Additionally, we're looking at a day match, and we all know Chief is one of the best characters in the day.

Also, the biggest factor of them all, Claire/Luna ass SFF
