Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1097

I don't think Bacon was ditching four-ways even if Link won, and further I wouldn't trade L-Block's run for 2008 being all 1v1. But that's me.

I just found L-Block boring from the beginning. It tore the contest up, but in a way that would only lessen the impact of any future contest. It essentially came down to exploiting the format of the contest. And L-Block is in no way a character, and its inclusion was a dumb one-off joke that for some reason gained traction. If we could get a legitimate character doing the same thing L-Block did, that'd be amazing. Draven and Teemo are not the characters that deserve that, though.

So basically, it's dumb unless you happen to like the character?

L-Block is the only time I liked rallying.

I'd say L-Block is about the same as last contest probably. The joke should've already died there and it's still from a game with amazing playrate, so the 2010 strength should be quite accurate.

The LoL Teemo thread died 15 minutes ago. I don't think we'll see a rally come out of that one. Gotta keep an eye on reddit.

I just realized there's a chance that the exposure that LoL is giving their matches could also seriously help some characters like, say, Cirno.
#56 | LeonhartFour | Posted 8/7/2013 9:33:40 AM | message detail
I think he would've been more inclined to keep it a one time thing if Link ends up winning the contest easily.

2007 was a good contest overall, and for lots of reasons other than L-Block. But 2008 and especially the Games Contest really didn't need to see that format reused. 2007 was just lightning in a bottle and Allen wanted to recapture it if he could, to no avail.

My main reason was how L-Block made the contest look. He carried essentially the same voting block throughout the entire contest. He didn't necessarily get stronger throughout the contest, but the format set it up where the farther L-Block got in, the less he needed to pull off while having a voter base completely outside of the standard voting block. In a multi-way contest, easily rallied characters like L-Block actually get stronger as their opponents get stronger, because the legitimate votes are getting split more and more. Luckily, this contest only requires one of the serious options to get above an outside force instead of two.

It has more to do with it being a completely outside force. If Draven could pull this off with the normal site goers, that'd be cool, but Draven or Teemo winning would in no way represent this site. It's essentially a measurement of how far GameFAQs has fallen in popularity that an invasion of another website could completely dictate our contest. At least L-Block was an overall movement.

Who said I have issues with Link winning? I'd much rather see the day where Link actually loses than a series of contests that devolve into everyone losing. Link keeps winning because he deserves to win, it's as simple as that. It's a popularity contest, and Link has proven time and time again to be one of the most popular video game characters, and that's especially true on this site.

I don't think LoL has so much power outside of Europe (and yes I know it's popular all around the world but it's fact that most of Draven votes came from Europe..)

This somewhat makes me doubt the rallying power, unless Teemo really is just nothing to them. I do hope Allen is checking for vote stuffing, because as of right now there is pretty much zero effect from these rallies. Palutena is still gaining 50 or more votes on Teemo every update and she's fodder. Jak is a least a high fodder or low midcard character... I'm just not sure how "legit" Draven's rally was.

The L-Block run was amazing. Even though DK was in the match, I knew something was wrong once Kirby go eliminated. But I wish he'd never been included in a contest since then. He would have remained an undefeated champion.

I go from +6 to 0 if Palutena stays in 2nd and I'm in the "4 other users tied with" category!

Maybe I'm just projecting my own thoughts here but I have to imagine most people went L-Block > Teemo > Palutena. With a few who went Teemo > L-Block > Palutena.

I'm not really that worried that getting this "wrong" will be damaging. I'd be surprised if this match shakes up Expert Challenge all that much no matter the result.
