Heck, Zelda in general kinda sucked in 2010, but everybody overlooks it because Link won anyway. Ganondorf didn't look good. Zelda didn't look good.

But winning solves everything.

Zelda and Ganondorf has super boring routes in 2010 which makes people forget about/not notice their numbers (unless you took Ganon > Sonic). This year at least Zelda has a match with Charizard. Ganon still gets thrown to Mario in round two, though.

Yeah, Ganondorf's totally wasted this year. I remember wondering why I couldn't remember what Ganondorf's path was this year since I felt like he was prone to an upset in the right situation. Then I looked at the bracket again and went 'oh'

I guess we can judge how well Ganondorf does on Guybrush relative to Vincent 2010 or something.

Match XXXIX: (9) Sly Cooper vs. (10) Francis York Morgan vs. (19) Lugia

Previous Contest

Sly Cooper – 2004
13.63% against Sephiroth

Francis York Morgan – N/A
N/A

Lugia – N/A
N/A

Analysis

Funny how the initial guru choice still made the bracket despite the switch, I guess not everyone got the memo, not that it takes a lot of nominations to make the contest. A lot of people feel that only the first two generations of Pokemon are worth anything, but we never exactly had a Pokemon from the second generation compete. Lugia it likely the strongest Pokemon from the second generation, but there is not much competition in terms of fan favourites, other than the starters, the legendary gerbils, Ho-Oh and Pichu due to Melee there are not many other Pokemon from the second generation that could potentially have strength. Regardless given the competition Lugia should have no problem winning over these weak characters.

The fight for second is quite hard to predict given how weak the characters are. The last time we saw Sly was back in 2004 where he was crushed by Sephiroth in a time when Final Fantasy VII had strength. Since his match Sly has had three new games, one was about a month after his match, one in 2005 and the other was just a couple of months ago and he made an appearance in Playstation All-stars. Not exactly stellar releases, but you do not need much to come in second here.

Francis is from a game that is popular with its fans, but the problem is not too many people have played his game. A cult game usually spells death for a character, but it may not necessarily be the end for him. I do not think he has the strength to win this being a guy in a suit from a game most people have not played, but the upset is there.

Overall I do not think Lugia will be as impressive as the other Pokemon we have seen in the past, but in this match we might see him being a world beater. Lugia does have a lot going for him, appearance on Silver, a movie before the movies got stale and an excellent Pokemon to use in uber battles.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Lugia > Sly Cooper and Francis York Morgan

charmander6000’s Prediction: Lugia – 53.47%, Sly Cooper – 25.37%, Francis York Morgan – 21.16%

Lugia would've been a fine nom if he had stuck with it. It'd be nice if the Guru nom was used for someone who could do well and someone who'd have a hard time getting in otherwise. Yuri doesn't really fit either criteria.

Altair's still probably the best Guru nom we've had so far, but he probably didn't need the help getting in.

As long as we still have a bracket of this size, there won't be any characters that are both interesting and have a hard time getting into the bracket. You throw your Guru prize at turbo-fodder because you can easy rally support for any half-way interesting character.

The Guru prize still works since you can use it to get a character that wouldn't get Board 8 support into the bracket or use the nominations to boost Crono's seed or something. NRT may be losing it's place, though. It might still be worth running it one more time to see how it turns out.
