This might be accurate if everyone who voted for Shepard played Mass Effect in the first place. However, I can assure you based on personal experience that isn't the case. There are quite a large number of matches (although not this one) where I would vote for Shepard without having ever played his games, and I only know him as the one face which exits on the cover of the games. When I see that I think "Yeah! Commander Shepard! Mass Effect! Those games were popular!" When I see the current picture though all I think is "Who is this chick again? Don't care voting for the guy from Smash."

Middle stand out factor? I'm much more interested in this "third place" factor where it seems that the last place character gets abandoned and does far worse than he would in a 1v1. I might have to adjust future predictions in light of this, especially if one of the three ladies (all of which are gauged to be at about the same level according to the board) gets totally left behind tonight.

I cannot really say I am surprised by Kain's performance, even though Olimar > Kain hurts my Expert bracket. He hasn't had a game in a good decade now and awareness of the guy has to be way down (and a quick Google indicates there was a new game, Dead Sun, that was cancelled last year). It's a shame because I remember when that series was really ambitious and engrossing in its story and setting and it's kind of just...gone.

Raziel was the face of the franchise for a while until Crystal Dynamics began to get Kain back in there. Afterwards Kain started becoming more and more a fan favorite with LoK fans.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. We're talking about a fan favorite character from a well-liked JRPG on a Nintendo handheld. Juliet has flair, but her game is about as flash-in-the-pan as Dead Rising, and I can't imagine it having a huge following here.

I'm more worried about who's getting the second and third spots. I've heard that Tina isn't liked very much, but we don't have any info on the Borderlands characters, aside from Claptrap.

A lot of people are going to feel like fools taking Juliet for any position other than last, she represents the weakest series against Fire Emblem and Borderlands, doesn't have the individual exposure like Tiny from her own DLC and the entire logic for selecting her seems to be that her design will act as a magnet for the undecided which is shaky logic at best in a poll with 3 females.
It's a serious upset call to take her for anything, Tharja > Tina > Juliet is the result if it were voted on by their game.
It's not like Travis ever did well either and this is a poor mans Travis from a game that even suda fans were mixed on.

I'm going thru Awakening right now, up to Chapter 13(?). Tharja's a nice, entertaining character, but I'm failing to see why she, of all of the non-plot important playable units, was amongst the most nominated for this game other than her attire...*shrug*

My second and third picks are still up in the air. I might just nix them for that round, I'm not entirely sure yet. What you say makes a lot of sense, but I also don't have a gauge of the site's opinion on Tina, or how likely they are to anti-vote her.
