I think the Magikarp "no picture" argument is certainly valid. When I answered the poll I took about 10 seconds going, "who the **** are these characters? Oh hey Magikarp! the only name I recognize. *votes Magikarp* "
#302 | -LusterSoldier- | Posted 7/7/2013 12:54:48 PM | message detail
At least with the vote-in polls for the last Character Battle, the poll options listed the game or series that they are from, so name recognition wasn't a problem at all. Some of the characters in today's poll have a problem with name recognition due to the expanded field (creating more turbo fodder than usual) and the options don't even list the game or series they are from.

So it seems that a few of us think that Samus will turn into a washed-up has been suddenly. Somehow I'm not feeling it, at the very least Nintendo isn't treating her the same way Capcom is treating Mega Man.

Honestly, to me it seems that Nintendo still considers Metroid to be a key franchise, though there are arguments against all the evidence I have. At the very least, Nintendo isn't being very obvious at all about any negative actions against the series, unlike Capcom with Mega Man.

If you want to discuss this with me, please don't bring Metroid: Other M into this. I know that most Metroid fans view it as a complete abomination that ruins Samus beyond belief. I haven't played the game in a while so I don't want to discuss it.

I don't consider Magikarp's performance in this poll to be impressive at all. Look at his competition!

They're all chumps! Even Donkey Kong could beat all of these guys Magikarp is beating.

Maybe the karp will end up getting a decent percentage in his first match, but he's still going to get soundly beat.

Metroid is on the backburner right now if anything, Retro is off doing other things and after Other M (yes, I know you said don't bring it up but hear me out) Nintendo understandably wants to re-evaluate just what they want to do with the series and wait until Other M fades from memory before making Metroid Prime 4 or whatever the next entry is (my theory). In other words, it's basically Metroid during the Nintendo 64 era all over again where Nintendo is trying to figure out just what the next evolution of the series is (and let's hope it's not as big a mystery as it was in 1999).

Capcom's treatment of Mega Man since 2010 really doesn't compare with Nintendo's treatment of Samus (which I agree with you on). Nintendo didn't can every Metroid title in development, take Samus out of SSB and purge her from memory Stalin-style out of a personal grudge against her creator (RIP).

Locke is Ness' only real threat in that match. But I'm personally banking on Ness to be able to barely squeak by. If Locke gets the upset though, I wouldn't be too surprised. Ness isn't exactly a powerhouse.

In today's PotD, the "voting only" option is killing it. This is a good thing for the health of the contests-it means that they are well-liked beyond Board 8, and let's face it, the Board 8 community alone is not large enough to sustain something like this. It also supports the "stir up interest in the site" reasoning that Allan needs to prove in order to get funding for these contests, and it gives him a reason to continue to run them even if his funding is drastically cut (most voters care about supporting their favorite characters in the contest rather than winning a big prize, so it's worthwhile regardless). All-around a good result for those who want more contests after this one.

Not really. I mean, it's a good percentage. But the votals are atrocious. If 2011 votals took us 2 years to get another contest and votals now are even lower...

Last 6 contests and the percentage of voters that didn't fill out a bracket:

Rivalry Rumble - 78.60%
Game of the Decade - 68.18%
Character Battle 2010 - 69.06%
Best Game Ever 2009 - 67.61%
Character Battle 2008 - 67.07%
Character Battle 2007 - 69.62%

As of right now 73.84% of the voters did not fill out a bracket for this Character Battle. While this percentage is lower than the Rivalry Rumble, it's still higher than every other contest we've had besides the Rivalry Rumble.

Vote totals have gotten even worse since Rivalry Rumble came to an end.

Average vote totals in the 3 months prior to the start of Rivalry Rumble - 50304
Average vote totals in the 3 months prior to this poll - 40325

Essentially, that's a 10000 vote drop in average vote totals between the start of the Rivalry Rumble and the start of this Character Battle.

Now assuming this 20% drop holds over for the contest the average night poll will have 22684 votes while the average day poll will have 29054 votes based on the first round of the Rivalry Rumble.

I imagine something like Tharja/Starling/Tina struggling to break 15k.

My counter is that while it's true that Nintendo hasn't announced a new Metroid since Other M, it's not like Nintendo has announced anything big since then for another franchise, at least where Mario and Zelda are concerned.

It's been a common trend for all of these topics to have over 60% of the site not having any interest in filling out a bracket.

Last 6 contests and the percentage of voters that didn't fill out a bracket:

Rivalry Rumble - 78.60%
Game of the Decade - 68.18%

Best Game Ever 2009 - 67.61%
Character Battle 2008 - 67.07%
Character Battle 2007 - 69.62%

Right now, 77.67% of this site is not interested in this Character Battle. That's almost as high as the Rivalry Rumble, despite the fact there is more hype for this contest on Board 8 compared to the Rivalry Rumble.

I have no idea what URL format this contest will use for the match pictures. Here was the URL format for the match pictures in Rivalry Rumble:

http://image.com.com/gamefaqs/images/rivals/rivals-XX.jpg

XX = match number

However, sometime in 2012, GameFAQs started using "img.gamefaqs.net" instead of "image.com.com", so I have no idea what URL format will be used for match pictures. I have a script set up to check several different URL formats to figure out where the first match picture will be located at.
