But Borderlands is also a sequel! It's like I said earlier: this year doesn't have a Skyrim to decimate everything. In fact, there are only three "big name" games in this poll, and the one that didn't receive fan and industry criticism is the one leading comfortably. Walking Dead and Xenoblade are taking advantage not only of their excellent reputations, but of the very weak opposition. As you said, this is probably the weakest GotY ever and I'd love a follow-up poll asking "how many of our GotY nominees have you actually played?"

The two games with the most overlap in this poll are Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect 3, I think. Both are FPS/WRPG hybrids. Then Xenoblade/Mario for being Wii exclusives. And neither of those are very big overlap, either. It's a pretty fair poll.

We don't really have trends for the games themselves. If you want stats for the series themselves...

Assassin's Creed has usually had a good day vote and an okay night vote. Mass Effect has relatively balanced trends.

Isn't Assassin's Creed usually an 'everything but the board vote' series? I mean, it's stronger during the day than overnight, but it usually bombs the board vote. Here, the board vote was it's only sign of life.

Halo 4 got 37%~ on Borderlands 2.

Halo 4 being the #2 GotY means that Far Cry 3 would be the #3, and I can't really see that happening on GameFAQs.

since these games are so weak and, like yoblazer said, a lot of people haven't played them, I kinda wonder if the final GOTY poll ends up being radically different. I doubt it, but these games wouldn't break the GameFAQs top 50 strongest games.

Ezio had a bad board vote against Simon Belmont, but that was a weird poll that started like 10-15 minutes late, if I recall correctly, so I wouldn't count it. He did pretty bad for the first few hours against Zelda, but he was much better after that.

Trends for The Walking Dead:

EBV | 43.58%
PHV | 41.16%
FNV | 44.47%
BSV | 44.70%

Terrible Power Hour, but it does have an excellent day vote. The poll happened on a weekend, so the day vote starts in the morning.

Yeah, this is just a crummy year. The biggest games disappointed us and it made people CONFUSED AND ANGRY

To think that with a proper ad campaign and release, Xenoblade might be challenging for GotY.

Well, GOTY results rarely hold serve in actual contests.

Or rather, they rarely hold up over time. Remember MGS4 and Brawl going neck and neck in 2008? How do you figure that one goes now?

Yeah, which is why I don't think these results will hold up over time as more and more people play the games instead of voting based on any number of other factors (or maybe voting for the only game out of the lot they've played, like me!). New games are weird like that. Even characters from new games are weird like that. Remember Lightning getting 38% on Sonic before FFXIII even came out in America?

I would like to play Xenoblade eventually, but I have a lot of other games to play before I get there. Plus, I don't have as much time to sink into a game like that nowadays anyway. It'd probably take me two months at least to beat it.

I also keep hoping it'll eventually get a price drop, but I'm probably dumb for trying to wait for that.

It's a shame we never got to see Mass Effect 2 in real action pre-ME3. The only things we have to judge it on are Mass Effect 1 in GOTD and Shepard getting beaten pretty badly by Pikachu despite Mass Effect 2 being a fairly recent release (I think?).

Now if Mass Effect things bombs in a contest we'll never know if it's because Mass Effect 2's strength was exaggerated or because Mass Effect 3 caused a big drop.

Persona 4 Arena is the only game in the poll I've played aside from an XCOM demo. I have AC1, but haven't played it yet. The only games in the poll I'd play aside from P4A are The Walking Dead and XCOM. Not really interested in the rest.

I think they're the only 2012 games I've actually played (and beaten)! But then... I'm not sure I qualify as "here" generally.

Yeah, I know, but I'm cheap nowadays. I find it hard to pull the trigger on a game for more than like 25 bucks unless I really want it.

I want Xenoblade, but I don't really want it. Despite all the high praise it gets, I'm partially concerned that it wouldn't be the type of RPG I go crazy over based on what I know about it.

Not really. It's been keeping the same 20-ish vote lead for a while now, and Xenoblade probably has the better day vote. And Europe vote.

I wouldn't count out The Walking Dead, either. It has nowhere to go but up.

Also, I don't think ME3 would sour people on ME2. If anything, I think it'd stabilize it. ME2 is now clearly the favorite game of the series.

I don't think ME2 will be affected much, but I could see it drop a bit. If the conclusion is disappointing in a series like that, where everything builds off of everything else, it can easily hurt the series as a whole.

Yeah, if you manage to find a sealed $50 copy at GameStop, jump on it. There's no guarantee that Nintendo re-releases it in any form.

Anyway, Xenoblade and ME3 are quite dissimilar and left very different imprints on me (still not done with Xenoblade, but I'm at the very end). ME3 is gaming's biggest rollercoaster - rarely has a game peaked higher and crashed lower. There are probably fans out there who consider the mid-game climax to be the best gaming moment ever, and the ending to be the worst. The disparity is that extreme.

Xenoblade has just been consistently awesome.

The cheapest you'll probably find Xenoblade is $40-$45 used unless people sell it cheaper on ebay or something. I see copies of it at every GameStop I go to, but maybe it's just not big in my area.
