Retro Analysis VII: (2) Ridley vs. (7) Diablo Results Ridley – 42.35% Diablo – 57.65% Stats Year: Spring 2005 Round: Round 1 Oracle Prediction: Diablo, 50.14% GameFAQs Brackets: Diablo, 48.32% My Prediction: Ridley > Diablo Analysis There weren’t many debatable matches in the villain’s contest, but this was by far the most debated and most important match of the contest. While M. Bison and Kefka were given a chance the winner of this match was thought to be the massive favourite of winning the division. Ridley while not the final boss like Bowser or Ganondorf is Metroid’s most well-known boss and given how strong Samus was it was thought that Ridley would also have some decent strength. Mother Brain’s performance against Lavos earlier in the round also cemented the idea that Ridley would be at least strong enough to win the division. On the other end the board was afraid of Diablo after watching Starcraft’s run during the games contest the year before. The game showed that seeding doesn’t matter and that Blizzard is well liked on this site plus there is also the possibility of rallying should the match become close. This fear was enough for people to pick Diablo to win the division, but to others they believed in his strength. The match begun and GameFAQs showed that it too was quite split in which character they had in their brackets. After that Diablo held the lead and essentially sprinted away from Ridley turning the most debated match of the contest into something of a laughing stock. Diablo even got some rallying to increase its lead by even more, but by that time the match had long been over. So what happened to Ridley? I think the biggest mistake was to compare hero/villain ratio of Mario/Bowser and Link/Ganondorf with Samus/Ridley. Bowser and Ganondorf are much more to their series than a boss fight. We also have to concede that Samus gets a significant portion of her strength from Super Smash Bros., something Ridley does not receive. Either way the match left Ridley supporters after the contest thinking what could have happened had they chosen Diablo as this match to some of them was the difference between winning and losing the contest. Diablo also proved that he was capable of winning the division, but with M. Bison looking impressive he wasn’t considered a full lock just yet. too. At first I was immensely disappointed after voting because I
thought it was ME3 that was doing so well. Can't believe Borderlands is

Borderlands
is doing this partly because it's the only big-name title that didn't
get a fair share of criticism. I think we sometimes underestimate how
many of the voters haven't played a single damn one of these games, let

I guess I'd probably take it over MW2 now. Also, I dunno if I'd say this is a weak field as much as there's just no clear cut favorite. GF voters have voted down underwhelming sequels at every turn this year. ME3, FF13-2, AC3. meanwhile, games like Walking Dead are doing really well, a genre that GF has never even considered playing. --- xyzzy |
