Since we're wrapping up the longest console gen ever, I want Game of the Generation.

DS
PSP
360
PS3
Wii
PC (from the DS launch - or a couple weeks earlier to include Half-Life 2 - through 2012)

It would be extremely unpredictable, and Skyrim would have a real shot at being our first (non-L-Block) western winner.

Twilight Princess would win. Zelda will never lose another contest. GotD and Rivalry Rumble have made that pretty clear.

Game of the Generation is either Brawl or Twilight Princess, or we get something really dumb because people rally against one of those two games winning. I don't think Skyrim would win though, but maybe if it gets in that scenario, it could. Who knows.

"Extremely unpredictable" is an overrated factor in contests though. Otherwise, we'd still have four-ways.

Eh, 4ways veers off the path of unpredictability into pure randomness, and that becomes far less enjoyable. As GotD demonstrated, unpredictable 1v1 matches are lots of fun.

Game of the Decade is an overrated contest as well.

But it wasn't being unpredictable that made it a good contest anyway. It was having a bunch of close matches. I don't think anyone cares if we predicted the match would be close or not as long as it's actually close. The one thing it didn't have was huge comebacks except for Majora/FFX, which is why it's an overrated contest and I'm not all that fond of the 12 hour format because it kills big comebacks.

I'm not the only one who feels that way about GOTD, so don't look at me that way.

And remember when we all talked about THE GAUNTLET OF DEATH in 2005 with the Dream and Devil Divisions? What an unpredictable pair of divisions back to back with a bunch of strong characters in it! And yet nobody really looks back on those two divisions fondly because the matches were boring except for Vincent/Squall and Magus/Knuckles, two matches nobody really expected to be good before the contest started.

Well, a games contest that stresses recent games will produce close matches as well. Shadow of the Colossus had three, and I also remember some others like Fable/TF2, Deus Ex/Rock Band, the big MM/FFX, Metroid Prime had some decent ones, etc.

I'd welcome a character battle, but I'd rather see a games contest first.

#210 | LeonhartFour | Posted 11/2/2012 12:14:35 PM | message detail
The problem with some of those matches is that nobody on the board cared about those games. You'll never hear anybody talk about Fable/TF2 as one of the best matches ever, even though as I recall it's the closest wire to wire match in history. All I'm saying is that there's more to a good contest than being unpredictable. Execution is the most important thing. Do those matches actually turn out to be good?

Besides, I care a heck of a lot more about characters than I do about games, so I've never really gotten into a games contest the way that I have a character battle anyway.

Gonna throw this out here - charmander suggested on Page 1 of this topic that somebody could run their own Character Battle on Board 8, and try and entice people from other boards to come nominate and vote. I don't know if I'd actually end up running something like this, but I have been running the idea through my head for a little while.

So I guess my question to you guys is - if I were to run an unofficial character battle (or, hell, a games contest, though that'd be more boring to me), what would you like to see? I'd want to drum up interest on other boards for noms and voting, and I'd probably want a field of 128 with two one-on-one matches a day. Beyond that I haven't thought too much about specifics, or even if I should use polls or manual voting.

I would sincerely hope a contest like this could get a lot of interest - I know things have been slow on the board lately, but maybe pretending it's contest season could bring some life back? I dunno. Let me know what you all think!

Yeah, if you were going to do it and you cared about the legitimacy of it at all, then you couldn't use polls. If you don't really care about that, then go nuts. tranny's Games Contest was fun for what it was.

I suppose that's what it comes down to - do I want a more legitimate, "serious" contest, or do I want GAME CONTEST. Personally I'd rather have the former but if more people want the latter, I can adjust.

12-hour matches are not feasible. I can't be on the computer all the time and my work schedule changes from week to week. That's why I thought 2 separate 24-hour matches would work better - contest moves at the same pace, but the administrative end is easier to manage.

I was thinking of running a year-end Game of the Gen contest as soon as SBAllen officially told us we weren't getting a 2012 contest. I even have the opening post drafted and saved, but I got lazy and decided not to do it. No real suggestions about how to run things.

I was gonna shoot for 12-hour matches and allow any old stats guy to make the next topic if I wasn't around. I would have also kept it to this board.

Sounds like a good idea. In the case of the DS, PSP, and PC, we should only count games released in 2006 or later since 2006 was the year that this generation got into full swing (with the Wii and PS3).

It will never happen. Twilight doesn't have the fans backing as much as a game like Majora and even that only just beat Brawl. Smash bros fanbase is far too big these days and Twilight doesn't even have the full backing of the Zelda fanbase. Neutrals won't vote for it.

We don't need a game of the generation.

If we do games again it should cover all games and not have any restrictions.

It was 53/47 last time, and Twilight Princess wasn't Zelda's "final last hope." We've seen much wilder things. If you pit them in a contest final, you can't simply discount LoZ to reverse three percentage points.

IMO, a game of the gen contest has at least three realistic winners.

Brawl
Skyrim
TP or SS (combined if you think one Zelda winning is the same as any other)

That's about the same variety as in a Link-less Character Battle, which could have either Cloud, Mario, Snake or a Pokemon that catches a rally wave.

I think she'd have a better shot than Snake if not for Mario, but it's hard to envision a scenario where Mario loses early (Cloud's probably the only one who can beat him) and Samus avenges him. If Cloud is strong enough to beat Mario in a semifinal, he'll probably beat Samus in the final.

I'd probably take Pokemon insanity before Snake, simply because no matter what gap one thinks there is between Snake and Samus/Mario, there's no way it's close to as big as what it was in 2006, where Snake's significantly better performances led to a decisive loss.

Tomorrow will be quite interesting, because we might possibly have 2 polls running at the same time. Back in 2008, we had 2 polls running at the same time on Election Day. One of those polls was a contest match, while the other poll was a US election poll that ran for about 9 hours (the poll didn't start at the same time as the contest match). That was the last time we ever had 2 polls running at the same time and it was the only time that Bacon ran 2 polls at the same time. Prior to that, we had several occasions while CJayC was in power where we had 2 polls running at the same time. That usually happened during an ongoing contest.

If we actually had a contest going on right now, we could have gotten 2 polls running at the same time on the Wii U launch date, where the second poll is a "Got Wii U?" poll located below the contest match. But since we have no contest right now, we might end up having just one poll tomorrow with the poll being related to the US elections. However, it would be a full 24 hour poll instead of that 9 hour poll we had on Election Day in 2008.

Tomorrow's poll:

I have no idea. It will be an original poll idea. It's possible that tomorrow's poll will be a US election day poll, but the poll question will not use the same wording as one of the previous election day polls. Also, it's possible that tomorrow's poll will not be related to the US elections, but we might get a second poll later in the day (like in 2008) where a second poll is put up along side the scheduled poll for tomorrow. This means that the US election day poll will run for less than 12 hours.

I totally forgot about Halo 4.

Damnit, Halo 4 messing up the trend of GameFAQs running an election day poll in every single presidential election since the PotD first started in 1999. Well, I guess we could still get an election poll, but the poll would start sometime after 12:00 PM EST, whenever Bacon gets around to putting up the poll.

Nice vote totals with this early vote. I figure anything related to politics would suck at bringing in the votes, just because there's a sizable minority that doesn't care about politics.

The most interesting part about this poll would be the trends later tonight when Asia and Europe are voting in full force.
