Boudii posted... contest announcement taking too long ;0 A full 63 day contest will not be possible before the end of this year. Now we need to start talking about the latest possible day we can get a contest announcement and complete a 47 day contest before Christmas arrives. To complete a 47 day contest before Christmas arrives, the first match has to start on November 7th (this allows for a bonus match on December 24th, though). Here is one possible set-up for a 47 day contest: Contest is announced on October 19th, with 4 days for nominations. Starting October 24th, there will be 3 days of Vote-In polls. The bracket is announced on October 27th and the contest entry period lasts for 10 days. First match starts on November 7th. Here is the other possible set-up for a 47 day contest: Contest is announced on October 12th, with 7 days for nominations. Staring October 20th, there will be 3 days of Vote-In polls. The bracket is announced on October 23rd and the contest entry period lasts for 14 days. First match starts on November 7th. Normally, we get 7 days for nominations and 14 days to enter the contest. But if we don't get a contest announcement before October 12th, we will have a shorter nomination period and contest entry period. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |

Literally the most boring and completely predictable poll ever. --- http://i.imgur.com/fe05x.png http://i.imgur.com/stNJf.png |
It's
intentional. We don't want a game where the most effective way to play
is to dodge in and out of enemy attacks. It's not that difficult to do,
and it's just not a very fun way to play. Forgot to mention that gem when telling Lopen how much Diablo 3 blows. --- •.,¸¸,.•´¯`•.,¸¸,.•´¯`•.,¸¸,.~*ST*~.,¸¸,.•´¯`•.,¸¸,.•´¯`•.,¸¸,.• Every man lives. Not every man truly dies. |
That
quote is kinda out of context. Basically he's saying he doesn't want
people to just stack movespeed and run past everything that's melee (or
run in, bait an attack, run back repeatedly) and avoid it all just
because your walk speed is faster than the attack animation. You can
dodge in and out with skills, vs ranged stuff, and vs telegraphed
melee/ranged attacks. Game's obviously very dodge heavy otherwise there
wouldn't be like 10 defensive skills per character. I mean the quote is hilarious but that's an issue of not being able to articulate yourself properly more than designer intent. (not that designer intent should be the end all anyway when the mechanics clearly contradict intent-- otherwise you might as well consider Smash Melee as bad as Smash Brawl) --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
The only way to lower the bar after 2011 would be to hold no contest at all, and it looks like we're shooting for it! --- Yoblazer: http://oi45.tinypic.com/258ngvc.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
I
wouldn't rule out the possible chance that we could start nominations
before the end of this year, but start the actual contest around
mid-January. That's what happened for the Winter 2010 Character Battle.
If that happens, Bacon needs to make up for the lack of a contest in
2012 by having a second contest near the end of 2013. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
From: Lopen | #067 That quote is kinda out of context. No it isn't. The entire thing: It's intentional. We don't want a game where the most effective way to play is to dodge in and out of enemy attacks. It's not that difficult to do, and it's just not a very fun way to play. "Most effective" and "not fun" just can't be in the same sentence when describing part of the game. We want combat to be based on use of abilities, putting thought into builds, building up offensive and defensive stats, etc. Skill is absolutely a part of all of the systems you'll use, and kiting can be too, but it'd be ridiculous if you could avoid all of the systems that make the game the game because you can time dodges of enemy attacks and negate every other factor. Also think about just running past enemies to rush through an area and never being hit. Anyone looking to rush would love it! Which is why it's not a good idea from a design perspective. :) It's not something we'll be changing. They could have easily made a game with correct collision detection on top of preventing (g)rushing. They had ten f***ing years. Instead, we get dog poo and Blizzard telling us that players are not allowed to decide what fun is. If I tell a patient that they aren't allowed to seek second opinions or decide their own course of action for care, I can pretty much guarantee I will never see that patient again because they will find a different vet with more tact and people skills. --- Rufus Shinra survived a duel with Cloud and kicked all of our asses in the guru contest. |
You should argue about Diablo 3 in a more appropriate venue, like Vlado's Babe Brawl topics. --- Current Let's Play: Legend of Mana - http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3474994 Previous LP's: http://lparchive.org/search/Mega64#results |
Wylvane gets it. --- "Hold on a minute! That testimony stinks!" "Witness! You can't just say 'Hello' and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!" |
Also think about just running past enemies to rush through an area and never being hit. That pretty much tells you what he means there and the context you need to absorb the quote. And it's exactly what I just said. The solution is either: 1. Have very strict collision detection and slow down base move speed so it's less easy to abuse just running past things. 2. Have very strict collision detection and speed up attack animations to compensate so people can't just run past everything. 3. Have very strict collision detection and able to juke everything without a lightning fast attack animation just by running towards and away or right past. This is what he's saying is bad and should be avoided. And I can't help but agree with him because this isn't really designed like a 3D action game or 2D sidescroller which is kinda the venue you need for this approach to make any sense. Overhead action game with strict collision detection just isn't super feasible unless you make the player move super slow, make enemies attack super fast, or make melee enemies a joke-- all of which are less desirable. 4. What we have now. There's still plenty of dodging in the game-- it just happens that the dodging for melee attacks is "don't let them get close to you" (reasonable for most melee enemies, honestly) or "use a defensive skill to create distance/absorb damage" --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
Part
of the reason that we get such low votals may be in the fact that I

From: Boudii | #080 2010 is the last year contests were alive and kicking. Rivalry Rumble was not a proper contest and it does not count. What's interesting is that 2010 was arguably the best year for contests ever, with a great one to start the year and an even better one to end it. SBAllen hit a home run with the 12-hour format and then... stopped caring or something. If there were something to it, like GameSpot's contests taking precedence or his bosses getting stingy and allocating funds for fewer contests, I wish he would tell us. At least then we could temper our expectations and/or stop hoping. Anyway, I just realized that our upcoming Game of the Year poll might have two New Super Mario Bros. titles. Not too sure about the release schedule, but I doubt anything is coming out that beats New Mario on the 3DS or Wii U (Pikmin is next year, right?). --- Yoblazer: http://i32.tinypic.com/zlf1w7.gif Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |

I miss something cause there was literally nothing about a contest in
his GWAR thing. Unless that's what he meant by "upcoming feature" (which
I sincerely doubt) (referencing about 50 posts ago) best contest still was the spring 2004 one. by far. 05 and 06 were good, after that all the double battle and l block crap ruined it --- http://i.qkme.me/3ofd75.jpg |

Not_Wylvane posted... So how were the trends? Trend charts for yesterday's poll: https://spreadsheet.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdE9BTnYtVEdvR19TemJBS0tacURUaGc&gid=2 "My parents" started out strong with the early vote and Power Hour. Even though "My parents" was losing percentage all night, it still had an above average night vote. Near the very end of the night vote and early part of the morning vote, "My parents" did slightly better and gained a very small amount of percentage. The later part of the morning vote was the worst time period for "My parents". "My parents" continued to lose percentage all the way until the start of the ASV. When the ASV started, "My parents" started to perform better with this time period, but the ASV was so weak that it only gained a total of 0.52% with the ASV. Compare that to the 2011 poll when "My parents" gained 1.71% with the ASV. After 5:25 PM in the 2012 poll, "My parents" has already run out of steam and ended up losing 0.32% during the remainder of the ASV. I never would have expected "My parents" to perform better with the night vote than the ASV, but that's what happened this time around. "Other family members" had a good Power Hour and night vote, but a terrible morning vote and ASV. "My significant other" had a very terrible early vote and Power Hour. Because of how terrible the Power Hour was, "My significant other" had no choice but gain percentage during the night vote, despite the fact that it had a below average night vote. "My significant other" performed best during the middle part of the morning vote and continued to gain percentage until shortly after the start of the ASV. At 2:45 PM, "My significant other" reached 16.48% before going back down in percentage again. However, this would be very short lived. After dropping down to 16.39% at 4:15 PM, "My significant other" would turn it around and start gaining percentage during the ASV. "My significant other" had a better ASV and SNV compared to the night vote. Overall, "My significant other" was gaining percentage throughout the entire poll, besides that 1 1/2 hour period early in the ASV. The fact that "My significant other" was gaining percentage during most of the ASV would reconfirm the existence of the AWV (After Work Vote). We saw the After Work Vote happening in this poll - https://spreadsheet.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdFpLZ1BsSllqdTQ0Yl91T0xsZ3ZYUUE "One roommate" had a average early vote, but finished strong with the end of the Power Hour. It had a slightly below average night vote (and SNV too). It performed worst during the early morning vote. However, it did perform better during the later part of the morning vote. "One roommate" had a slightly above average DSV, but an average ASV and SNV. "Multiple roommates" had similar trends to "One roommate". However, "Multiple roommates" had a worse ASV and SNV compared to "One roommate". "Just my pet(s)" had a terrible early vote, but finished strong with the end of the Power Hour. After the Power Hour, it was pretty consistent for the rest of the poll. "Nobody at all" had an average early vote, Power Hour, and night vote. It did better with the morning vote, but even that is only slightly above average. It did worst during the ASV and SNV, but that was only slightly below average. There was little variation here. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
