How about a Character Battle by Era?

Quick, let's nominate 16 pre-Mario 1 characters.

As far as overall strength goes, I'm totally on the Nintendo train (no less spiritedly than usual, anyway). Square has been a mess since early 2010, and I wouldn't be surprised if that weakened every company rep across the field. Capcom could be in the same boat with their anti-consumer practices and the soon-to-be terribly received Resident Evil 6. Whatever exposure Big Boss might have gotten, MGS seems to be in a downward trend after 4 ended the main plotline. All the big Japanese companies minus maybe Atlus are looking worse today than three years ago.

The only Western IPs really set to take advantage of this are Mass Effect and Skyrim. One game has no CB-type characters and the other just had one of the most public fanbase blowups in gaming history. Shepard should be a bit stronger than in 2010, and Garrus could win a match, but there are question marks there. Assassin's Creed has been diluted with those annual non-numbered sequels, and Kratos is surely weaker 2-3 years removed from his big GoWIII ad campaign. I'm not sure if Drake is any stronger than in 2010 as UC2 was better received than 3 and considering he might suffer the same relevancy decline as MGS after his story wrapped up (it is wrapped up, right?).

So what does that leave? Not much besides Nintendo, really. When everyone else drags themselves down to the mud, you stick with the characters that have been in voters' hearts for 20 years. I'm taking Nintendo in pretty much any debated match. The B-Tier guys - Ganon/Zelda/Luigi/Bowser/Yoshi/the tough Pokemon - I'm taking them until they hit each other or Noble 9 shaped walls.

I'll still give Squall (and possibly Auron) the advantage in a night match, but in the day, forget about it.

There's literally no reason for thinking this considering none of the games that have come out after 4 had come out yet.

Especially considering there was massive hype for what was essentially MGS5 being announced the other day.

I either didn't know about that or did and promptly forgot. My gut tells me MGS is simply not as big as it was. It was such a huge deal leading in to 4. MGS4 was the PS3's killer app at a time when it had none. It was that console's flagship title and the dessert to finish off a series still fresh, cutting edge, and completely relevant. Been four years since then and gaming has changed (kinda like war LOL). I don't think Kojima can simply rekindle that flame.

It was announced as much as KHIII was announced. Meaning the creator has specifically referred to the title.

However it is speculated that this new game called Ground Zeroes is the supposed MGS5.
I'd like to think MGS5 is another game in the even further future.

Never seen that Trailer. Never even heard of Ground Zeroes. I don't think it'll have any effect in a 2012 contest. Big Boss disappointed me last time, and if MGS4 (and its perilous journey from Brawl-tier to SotC-tier) is any indication, he's probably weaker now. I doubt he'll be challenging for any big "out of his league" wins. Actually, who knows. Square always gets anti-voted and who the hell knows where Dante stands right now. He might beat a lot of those guys, but for me, the Nintendo B-team is the real test. Those guys are gonna be hard to beat.

Regardless, I think it's kinda silly to be dismissive of the entire MGS series because MGS4 didn't have staying power. That's an indictment of MGS4, not the entire series. Snake himself did just fine in 2010 despite MGS4's drop unless we want to argue the game didn't fall off of a cliff until a couple months later, better than Samus in a 24 hour match against Cloud. MGS3 has had staying power, and that game stars Big Boss. It was essentially RE4's equal in 2009 and 2010 (Keep in mind that MGS3 got 43% on Majora's Mask in a day match. Turn that into a night match, and that's 55/45 instead, like what RE4 got on FFX), and it was stronger than MGS4 in 2010. The MGS fanbase has soured on MGS4, not on the series as a whole.

Actually, RE4 did worse against FFX than I remembered. Sheesh. MGS3 might have been better than RE4 that year.

I'm not even sure if this topic doesn't reach 500 posts before the next contest is announced. If it is less than one week away from being announced, this topic might still be around before we move onto Part 1047.

I agree. I don't think it's a gimmick. It was a great thing when we had our last contest, since it was considered to be our worst contest ever. We ended up getting a 47 day contest instead of a 63 day contest (48 days if you count the bonus match).

I'm noticing that the new polls are going up slightly earlier than usual. Today's poll just went up at 11:59:43 PM EST, or about 18 seconds earlier than usual. This could cause problems for the First Vote contest, especially if the new poll does not go up consistently at 11:59:43 PM (or off by one second at the most).

And now today's poll went up at 11:59:38 PM. This is becoming a big problem for both the Oracle Challenge and TRE's First Vote contest. New polls are continuing to go up earlier than earlier than usual. Soon, there will be a time when new polls will be going up before 11:59:00 PM EST. This is definitely one of the bugs associated with the new AWS server that GameFAQs is on.

An update on this issue: I finally reported this bug earlier today, so hopefully it will get fixed soon. Last night's poll started at 11:59:32 PM EST.

The YouTube views means people are aware that it exists, even if you are not (and we had a few big topics about it here when it was announced, so yeah). And considering it takes like 15000 votes to win contest matches nowadays, you don't even need 1% of that viewership to have an impact on Big Boss's strength.

Ah, much better. The bug regarding the PotD has been fixed. Today's poll started at 12:00:01 AM EST. This was the response I got from Bacon:

Message From GameFAQs on 09/20/2012

The server that launches the poll reset is probably missing an NTP daemon. Will bug it up.

Basically, the server handling the polls had an incorrect time (ahead of the main GameFAQs server by nearly 30 seconds) because it was unable to synchronize with an NTP server. NTP is "Network Time Protocol", or what your computer uses to automatically synchronize your computer's clock so it remains accurate.

So when the internal clock for the poll server reached 12:00 AM, it started up a new poll on GameFAQs before the main GameFAQs server reached 12:00 AM.

Interesting poll today. Looks like RPGs continue to maintain their stranglehold on this site.

I'm surprised that Action Adventure isn't doing better than this. Any kind of game that focuses very heavily on exploring stuff would be the type of game that would most likely require an FAQ. This applies to RPGs as well, but it also would apply to Adventure and Action Adventure games too.

As someone who honestly DOES like D3 but is still very disappointed by it?

Bad drop rates and the related itemization are #1 far and away. I never feel like I'm getting any good items (because I'm not, the drops and bad stats are well documented by other people), and in a game that's centered around farming that really isn't acceptable.

Most other stuff is minor, like how an enemy starting a melee animation means you get hit or dodge; there is no dodging the environment mechanic. Very glitchy environments and walls, especially in some boss fights (Belial and Ghom, most notably). Changing skills resets Nephalim Valor, which is just idiotic and goes against the spirit of having a ton of options. No soundtrack to speak of.

Oh and this one is big and I can't help but mentioning Blizzard here: very bad security. I'll leave their design choices out like you asked, but the amount of unpunished hacking, duping, and botting going on is really weird. People have also learned how to cheat the hacking form to revive dead HC characters, which literally goes against the Terms of Service for the game. If you want to make Hardcore and not care if people die, then make Hardcore. I'm okay with it. But do NOT restore HC characters after death.

Lastly, patches feel like band-aids on a gash and aren't really fixing the problem people are having with bad drop rates.

I think given how long it's taking just to get a contest announcement, we might have to reduce the bracket to 64 entrants and 12-hour matches for round 1 in order to fit in a contest before Christmas. So if we don't get a contest announcement by the end of this month, we might not end up with a 128 entrant contest.
