Also upon looking at these things for the first time in forever, Super Mario Sunshine somehow ranks lower in the GotD X-Stats than NSMBWii.

I mean, GotD X-Stats are all kinds of messed up, but Sunshine is not looked upon favorably by the Mario fanbase. It wouldn't have lost to Halo 3 otherwise. Simple as that.

Mario 1 gets respect but I don't think many people like it that much. HM's really the only person I've ever seen that reveres it as some sort of gameplay marvel more than being "classic." Can totally see it getting some Pac-Man syndrome.

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

For one thing, not nearly as many people have played Pac-Man nowadays. Its playrate certainly isn't comparable on this site to Mario 1. But Mario 1 showed some legit strength in the 4-ways Games Contest that I don't think you can chalk up to simply "It only gets votes because it's well respected and not because people actually like it." It's definitely not in the Tetris tier. Mario 1 is still a good game, even by today's standards. This is a different situation.

Eh, the four way contest is like... SMB romping against a bunch of NES games that very little of our userbase has played, then folding like Pac-Man once it hit games that people have actually played and loved. Not entirely fair because it was SFFed to hell, but... I don't know-- I'd trust it a lot more if I didn't suspect a lot of the NES quadrant voting was franchise based. I'm pretty skeptical it'd do that well in a generationless division free for all.

Zelda 1 isn't an NES game that very little of our user base has played.

And it folded because it hit Mario 3 and Mario World at the same time. It's not a matter of "It hit games people cared about so it looked bad." It was a matter of "It hit two games within its own series that are considered better than it," which is totally different. I mean, look at how Zelda 1 performed in that match. It nearly eliminated Mario 3 because of that.

Yeah. I'm not saying I expect it to fold that hard against games people have played. Well aware of the mass SFF there-- I'm just saying that uh, put it in divisions full of 16 bit+ games and I don't think it looks nearly as strong as it did.

Also uh SMB didn't really romp against Zelda. It romped against the other games, and had closeish bouts with Zelda. I mean I'm not saying it's full blown Pac-Man where anything with a following can beat it... just saying it's Pac-Man...ish. Change the other two games in that poll from SMB3 and SMW to Final Fantasy VI and Super Smash Bros Melee and I don't expect SMB to hold up much better. Largely speculation but not much else we can do but speculate! The data on SMB isn't particularly good.

Anyway uh, if anything Mario winning by a lot against Zelda + 2 fodder and then winning by very little against Zelda + MM2 and Tetris lends support to my theory, I think.

And good thing you edited I was about to bust out a Knuckles Yuna 55-45 romping

Also, I don't know if it really supports your theory because Tetris is the ultimate "We respect it but we don't really love it" game, so it's not like it really changes the variables other than you've added two much stronger games.

Added two much stronger games

Mario lost like twice the ground Zelda did

That's pretty much how the Pac-Man principle works, buddy. Crushes fodder, folds against stronger stuff more than he should.

I was talking about the character since that's where the whole point of me comparing it to Pac-Man! Pac-Man the game doesn't get any factors named after it unless we have "this game is really weak" factor which I don't see coming into play unless we're having a dumbest acronym competition.

Gosh it's like I leave this topic for 1.7 years and people have forgotten all the terminology.

This tells you how awful of an idea a 4-way Games Contest by era was. We can't even remember most of what happened, and we had to give an entire division to games that never would've made it in if they didn't have their own division!

Man, I wonder what GotD would've looked like if it was divided by year.

If there's one thing to bet on in the case of Mario 1 vs. Halo 1, it's...Mario 1 soaking up Halo's anti-votes. Plus Halo may have overperformed during GOTD due to voters giving it extra respect (due to the whole "GOTD boost" or something).

Halo 1 vs. Mario Galaxy would be more debatable.

Side question: Do you think Mario Galaxy would defeat Modern Warfare more easily now than Modern Warfare defeated Mario Galaxy in BGE2?

Also, I honestly believe that Mario Galaxy boosted between BGE2 and GOTD due to NSMBWii and SMG2 coming out. Anyone else with me?

You know, I'm starting to worry that we're going to have to start waiting for GameSpot's annual farce of a contest every year before we get to have a contest of our own.

I don't want this to become tradition, but I think it's getting there.

All 3 of GameSpot's contests were announced in August, with 2 of those contests starting in early September. So if GameSpot doesn't announce their next contest by mid-September, I'm assuming they won't be doing a contest this year.

Do Halo and Master Chief still get anti-voted? I figured a lot of it was due to being the face of the XBox which shouldn't really matter anymore. If it's due to being from and FPS game there a bigger targets for people to direct their hate these days.

I don't think they get actively anti-voted or anything, or at least not as much as they used to, but they're still not all that popular, which is part of the reason I don't really think Halo is THAT GAME to take advantage of whatever "Pac-Man Factor" Mario 1 may or may not have.

With so much new discussion, I thought we had a contest-announcement....sorely disappointed!

Speaking of which, I'm unconvinced GameSpot'll run another contest. They have refused to learn from their lessons each time despite countless feedback and allowed 4chan to completely embarrass their last contest; as if it wasn't bad enough Bub & Bob beat Master Chief and Sonic in their Heros-contest or General RAAM upset Sephiroth in the Villians-contest, but they literally had a Sidekicks-final of Launchpad McQuack VS Albert Einstein. That's not an L-Block-situation where the internet humorously rallied behind one character in GameFAQs's ninth contest (in a new contest-format that better allowed this rally's success) -- one site largely pulled the strings for multiple characters every contest to troll.

GameSpot showed they weren't going to adjust around this glaring flaw (or their many others) and instead just stopped advertising the Sidekick-contest as it got worse. I don't think they'll return for more.

I'm noticing that the new polls are going up slightly earlier than usual. Today's poll just went up at 11:59:43 PM EST, or about 18 seconds earlier than usual. This could cause problems for the First Vote contest, especially if the new poll does not go up consistently at 11:59:43 PM (or off by one second at the most).

Also, excellent vote totals on today's poll. Today's poll will be the first poll in nearly 3 months to break 50000 votes. The last poll to break 50000 votes was a continent poll.
