Cloud's fading, Snake's not going to get any stronger, and no joke character's going to win again. This is quite an interesting post from Bacon, in a topic regarding the Alexa rank for GameFAQs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/573081-hellhole/63671751/712308899 That might actually explain why vote totals have dropped so much. GameFAQs traffic that came from Google has gone up by about 1000% over the last 5 years. People coming to the site for the first time are far more likely to bypass the front page because Google is giving them a direct result for a game's FAQ page. And well, the front page is the only location to find the PotD. Even before that post from Bacon, I was already making an attempt to tackle the issue of declining vote totals on the PotD. The solution is trying to get the PotD displayed on more than one part of the site. I already have a petition on Site Suggestions to get the PotD displayed on the main page for the boards. Just one user anti-signed it and it clearly came from someone who hates the PotD. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
-LusterSoldier- posted... This is quite an interesting post from Bacon, in a topic regarding the Alexa rank for GameFAQs: Its what I suspected but that kind of site popularity doesn't help the place in the slightest when it comes to the community and poll usage. Less people than ever are voluntarily using gamefaqs, the potds, social message board usage and what alexa is saying are both consistent with that. Trend charts for yesterday's poll: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdFJ4QVdFdFBWNjh2b054V2RoNU9OelE&gid=1 "I drive" has a strong early vote and remained strong for the first 2 hours before collapsing with the night vote. "I drive" fell all the way down to 49.65% at 7:31 PM before going back up again for the rest of the poll. After recovering from the bad night vote, it had a strong morning vote and day vote that continued all the way to the end of the poll. The last few hours of the poll were the best hours for "I drive". "I get a ride" has a strong early vote and stayed strong for the first 2 hours before collapsing with the night vote. "I get a ride" continued to drop in percentage until about 10:00 AM before finally stabilizing for the rest of the poll. At 2:56 AM, "I get a ride" had a maximum lead of 485 over "Public transportation". After that point, "Public transportation" would attempt to use the night vote and morning vote to pull a comeback, but it was able to get the lead all the way down to 13 at 10:26 AM and never managed to take the lead over "I get a ride". "I walk", "I ride a bicycle", and "Public transportation" all had a terrible early vote and Power Hour, but gradually did better as the night vote went on. All 3 options collapsed with the morning vote and continued to do bad for the rest of the poll. "I walk" reached 10.10% at 8:26 AM before going back down again. "I ride a bicycle" reached a maximum percentage of 4.69% at 7:31 AM, while "Public transportation" reached a maximum percentage of 15.37% at 10:26 AM. "I just stay home" has fairly stable trends for the entire poll. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |

Apparently,
the poll that was scheduled to start at 12:01 AM EST actually started 3

Why would he bother changing the PotD start time again? It's only relevant for contest matches and it was fine where it was. --- Pokemon VGC2012 Canadian Nationals - 8th place |
I think this new starting time would be pretty cool, because we have more people on GameFAQs at 9:00 PM EST than 12:00 AM. The problem with changing the PotD start time to 9:00 PM EST would be how it affects poll trends. There wouldn't be an SNV anymore, since the poll would end before that even starts. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
That
would really change the trends. We can finally bid the second night
vote completely goodbye; it won't exist as even the shadow it is now. I
kind of shudder to think how far down FFVII would be against OOT after a
Power Hour starting at 9 PM. On the other hand, the ASV will likely get crippled, as many day voters vote in the Power Hour instead. --- Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, Guru Winner, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time champion, Link. |
I posted this in another topic, but I'll post it here as well. Effects of a 9:00 PM EST starting time on trends: The ASV becomes even weaker. This is not a concern because the ASV has become so weak over the past few years that it barely even exists. I think there will be a time when there won't be a single sign of an ASV in weekday polls during the school year. The FNV lasts for a longer period of time. This is probably the best part of a 9:00 PM starting time, as the FNV is more important than the SNV towards the final result of any contest match. No more SNV in any poll or match, since the poll ends before the SNV kicks in. Extended Power Hour trends, since the poll starts earlier than normal. Instead of having 1 to 1 1/2 hours of Power Hour trends with a 12:00 AM start time, Power Hour trends could possibly last for about 2 to 3 hours before transitioning to true FNV trends. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |

How
would a 9PM start time influence the twelve-hour polls? You know,
assuming the 9PM thing is real (I think Bacon would've announced this if
it were, though maybe he's testing it or something) and assuming we
actually get a contest. UltimaterializerX posted... I would donate to a contest. You know, assuming the 9PM thing is real (I think Bacon would've announced this if it were, though maybe he's testing it or something) and assuming we actually get a contest. Yeah, I would have thought this would be announced already if the new time remained in place for all future polls. As for a 9:00 PM start time influencing 12-hour polls, the night matches would have longer lasting Power Hour trends at the start of the poll. The morning vote will be much shorter though, which could come into play with weekend matches where one character starts getting their ASV trends in the morning. In a close match where one character could pull a comeback in the morning, they will have less time to pull it off. As for day matches, those will now start at 9:00 AM. The earlier start time in day matches could benefit old-school characters like Mario and Yoshi which perform better in the morning compared to the ASV. Crono could also benefit as well from this start time, giving him more time to build up a lead in a close match before collapsing with the ASV. Although the ASV will end one hour earlier than normal, it's not like it really matters since the ASV is already diluted in 12-hour polls and the 9:00-10:00 PM hour is more of a transition hour towards the SNV in a normal 24-hour poll that started at 12:00 AM. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
The
poll didn't change at 9:00 PM EST today, so yesterday's 9:00 PM start
had to be a glitch. So today's poll will last for 27 hours instead of
24 hours. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
Hourly vote totals for all 27 hours of yesterday's poll: http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/9049/27hourpoll.png The interesting thing here was the spike in vote totals during the 12:00-1:00 AM hour when polls normally go up at. I expected that to happen as many people were unaware that yesterday's poll went up 3 hours earlier and waited until 12:00 AM to go to the front page to vote in the poll. The poll did show signs of a diluted ASV, though the ASV should remain diluted until the end of this week. Next week should mark the return to regular ASV trends again. Had yesterday's poll started at 12:01 AM EST instead, it probably would have ended up with about 3800-3900 votes by the end of the first hour and because of the 9:00 PM start time, it only had 3328 votes during the 12:00-1:00 AM hour. The poll would have probably been on track for about 40000 votes, so the extra 3 hours gave us about an additional 9000 votes (though there were about 10000 votes in the first 3 hours alone). --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |

Would anyone honestly take Halo over SMB1? I'm curious. You basically have to assume Mario Sunshine is relatively close to SMB1 (indirectly, of course) for Halo to even have a shot at winning that. Or you believe in some "New games whoop up on old games" SFF like Bacon seems to, for some reason. Halo > SMB1 > Halo 3 > SMS imhhho. I don't think Halo SFFed Halo 3 all that much, so yeah, SMB1 has a pretty decent window to fall into there. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
It doesn't have much of a window to fall in before SMB1/Sunshine becomes "debatable." And then you have to start debating whether you'd take Halo 1 over the original Legend of Zelda. Or heck, Super Mario Sunshine over Zelda 1. --- http://img.imgcake.com/leonhjpguz.jpg |
Halo vs Halo 3 wasn't really that close. 56-44 is a decent amount of breathing room. Also realize that the Halo franchise has anti-blowout voting trends so SMS probably cut it closer with Halo 3 than it had any right to. I dunno I'm saying I could see Halo like, 59-41ing Sunshine and 52-48ing SMB. I don't know how much x-stat breathing room that technically gives you but it seems like enough that SMB1/Sunshine isn't really "debatable" --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |

I'd be shocked if Mario 1 was closer to Sunshine indirectly than it was to Mario 3, World, and 64. That's my problem here. And you can't even use the "It's so old nobody's ever played it" argument because it's Mario 1. --- http://img.imgcake.com/leonhjpguz.jpg |
