Oh relevant poll.

It just doesn't work for me. I always sleep through it, turn it off completely in my stupor, or somehow decide the thing I set my alarm for isn't as important as I originally thought.

Finally decided to just be up before anything I need to get to, either by not sleeping at all, or getting into the habit of waking up at 6-8 in the morning on my own.

PC gamers are so weird. I don't recall the last time I even played a PC game. Consoles are more than enough to satisfy all my gaming needs.

I'd imagine people who invest much more money in their gaming would tend to be weirder.

At this rate, "Going to work, same as always" will end up reaching a 1000 vote lead before the ASV starts. We'll see if "Going to school, same as always" can take down a lead that large, especially with the lower vote totals. Judging what I saw of the morning vote today, "Going to school, same as always" should get the ASV here. Hourly trends so far:

1:00 | 34.69% | 25.79% | 6.99% | 11.84% | 20.70%
2:00 | 30.49% | 27.54% | 7.09% | 12.03% | 22.86%
3:00 | 28.09% | 27.79% | 8.06% | 14.24% | 21.81%
4:00 | 22.51% | 29.58% | 8.26% | 13.88% | 25.77%
5:00 | 21.12% | 27.51% | 9.12% | 16.79% | 25.46%
6:00 | 20.66% | 33.65% | 7.90% | 14.63% | 23.16%
7:00 | 28.23% | 33.08% | 6.87% | 11.15% | 20.67%
8:00 | 27.85% | 36.81% | 4.74% | 10.32% | 20.29%
9:00 | 25.29% | 36.25% | 5.75% | 13.07% | 19.64%
10:00 | 25.53% | 35.12% | 4.94% | 13.10% | 21.31%
11:00 | 27.73% | 33.73% | 5.08% | 12.98% | 20.47%
12:00 | 27.75% | 30.87% | 8.46% | 12.37% | 20.55%
13:00 | 26.08% | 32.84% | 5.24% | 15.28% | 20.56%

"Going to school, same as always" bounced back right after the night vote ended.

Hello ASV. In the past 30 minutes, "Going to school, same as always" has gone from 27.58% to 27.75%. The lead reached 1064 at 2:27 PM.

The first option could also apply to college students, who don't normally vote during the ASV. That might be the only reason why the first option would have a weaker ASV than expected.

Well then, this was unexpected. Over the past hour, the second poll option has been stalling the first poll option despite the first poll option continuing to go up in percentage. That's all because the second poll option has just started to go up in percentage for some odd reason.

With 65 updates remaining in today's poll, the first poll option must cut 6.58 votes per update to break even at the end of the poll. In the past hour, the first poll option is only cutting 5.08 votes per update. I expect the stalling to die down soon, because I think it's only temporary.

Trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdFpLZ1BsSllqdTQ0Yl91T0xsZ3ZYUUE&gid=1

All of the focus is on the first 2 options.

"Going to school, same as always" did well at the start, with the board vote and Power Hour. It was also able to win the first 2 hours of the night vote after the Power Hour ended. The night vote was where it did very terrible, but it bounced back right away once the morning vote kicked in. After the initial morning vote surge from about 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM, it dropped off slightly until the ASV finally kicked in. It managed to destroy the ASV easily. It had a very strange drop off in the final hour of the poll, although it was able to still win the SNV as a whole. I figure if the first poll option could put up nearly 35% in the first hour of the poll, it should be able to do that in the final hour of the poll as well.

"Going to work, same as always" had a terrible board vote and Power Hour. It continued to do bad with the night vote until 5:00 AM, where it had a huge jump. The second poll option continued this dominance throughout the morning vote until about 10:00 AM. After 10:00 AM, it dropped off slightly, until the ASV kicked in. Once the ASV kicked in, it finally collapsed even more. But this would only last for about 3 hours because it made an unusual bounce back that started around 5:30 PM. I was expecting the second poll option to drop off near the end of the poll so the trends for the last 1 or 2 hours would be similar to the first hour of the poll. That never happened and the second poll option actually managed to win the final hour of the poll.

The other poll options also had some noticeable trends as well, due to the extreme trends of the first 2 options. "Catching up on four years of lost sleep", "Catching up on four years of lost gaming", and "Extra day? What extra day?" all had a strong night vote and terrible ASV.. The morning vote was considered average, with their morning vote performance being similar to their final percentages at the end of the poll.

actually we have very few young people now compared to 2005/2006 . This site's userbase is old.

#276 | WarThaNemesis2 | Posted 3/4/2012 6:23:05 AM | message detail
In 2006 over 85% of the userbase was under 24. That number is now under 70%, even pretending that nobody who voted '21-24' is actually 24. More 13-17-year olds came here then than 13-20 year olds do now.

If you want proof this site doesn't appeal to new people, there it is.

I guess this explains why we lost so much site traffic. We are not getting new young gamers (13-17 year olds) to join the site while our older members are leaving. It makes sense I used to frequent this site much more often back in 2003/04/05 than I do now.
---
...
#278 | -LusterSoldier- | Posted 3/4/2012 11:03:54 AM | message detail
No, that's not the reason for losing site traffic. The people here have continued to become older even during the times when we were able to get over 100000 votes on non-contest polls.

so you don't agree that GameFAQS failure to attract new gamers to join is the reason or a big reason behind the declining traffic? because that how it seems to me, we have the same userbase from years ago, and as it get older more and more leave with no new users replacing them.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3660

this poll from late 2009. 60% of our users have been around for over 6 years (meaning joined in 2003/04 or before) , 20% over 9 years ( joined in 2000/01) and only 8% joined in the past 2 years. Its probably even worse now I don;t imagine many users have joined in the past 2 years.

Maybe the focus on online gaming and shooters this generation mean less people need a site like this but GameFAQS needs to find a way to attract new people to join and visit regularly

or maybe I am totally wrong and there are completely different reasons causing gamefaqs to decline in popularity >-<

I agree, that could be a big reason. Whatever new gamers we attract to the site will usually be between the ages of 18 and 25. Here are the average ages for all of the past age polls:

December 20, 1999 - 17.70
August 5, 2000 - 17.07
September 30, 2001 - 17.60
September 10, 2002 - 18.24
September 22, 2003 - 18.61
March 22, 2006 - 19.26
April 18, 2007 - 19.73
August 26, 2009 - 21.07
March 29, 2010 - 21.54
March 9, 2011 - 22.53

We had an average age of over 21 at the time an age poll got nearly 130000 votes on the 2010 age poll.

Now that yesterday's poll is over, I would like to update that list with this:

March 4, 2012 - 23.11

The average age of the people on this site increased by 0.58 years (about 7 months) over the past year. While the average age increased by 1 year during the 2010 and 2011 age polls, it only increased by about 7 months between last year's poll and today.

Trend charts will come later on.

By the way, yesterday's poll was the first time we had over 70000 votes in a poll since May 30th of last year, which happened in this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4353

We went a total of 278 days without any polls getting over 70000 votes, and that includes contest matches from last year's contest. I think yesterday's poll will be the highest vote total for this year and no other polls from this year will break 70000 votes.

Trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdC10T21ILUtZVk9iNzRzUlk4dDhPUkE&gid=3

The weekend trends had a huge impact on the trends. "13-16" held up better with the night vote on the weekend compared to an age poll on a weekday. Around 6:30 AM, the morning/day vote started to kick in for "13-16". But the weekend trends would cause a heavily diluted day vote, as "13-16" never managed a single hour over 10%. "13-16" did best during the DSV, which is the time period for the ASV on a weekend. "13-16" did best from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, which is the height of the day vote on a weekend. Around 5:00 PM, "13-16" stopped going up in percentage and remained stable until about 10:00 PM. After 10:00 PM, "13-16" started going down in percentage.

"17-20"did best with the board vote and Power Hour, which was also the best time period for "18-20" in the past age polls. "17-20" is slightly above average with the night vote, which suggests that including 17 year olds into that poll option had no impact on its trends. "18-20" also had a slightly above average night vote in the past age polls. The early morning vote was the worst time period for "17-20", which was also the worst time period for "18-20". Around 10:00 AM, "17-20" starts going up in percentage until 11:00 AM and then starts going back down again. Then around 12:30 PM, "17-20" starts going up in percentage again, which lasts until around 7:00 PM. Compared to the early morning vote, "17-20" did better with the day vote, but it's slightly worse than its night vote. "17-20" drops off a bit near the end of the poll.

"21-24" has an average board vote and slightly above average Power Hour. While it did best with the night vote, it has a much weaker night vote in a weekend poll instead of a weekday poll. "21-24" collapsed after 7:00 AM in this poll. The morning/day vote was the worst time period for "21-24". "21-24" starts doing slightly better after 2:00 PM and had 5 straight hours over 30% at the end of the poll.

"25-28" has a below average board vote and Power Hour and an average night vote. The morning vote and SNV were the best time periods for "25-28".

"29-32" had a terrible board vote and Power Hour, slightly below average night vote, and a good morning vote. Even the day vote and SNV were better than its night vote. "33-36" had nearly identical trends to "29-32", but "33-36" performs better with the day vote and SNV compared to "29-32".

"37-40" and "Over 40" had a terrible Power Hour, below average night vote, and a good morning vote. They had a slightly below average day vote and SNV.

I've found you often save money by selling it when its high priced and buying it back when its cheap if you have the urge to play it again. I remember selling FFXIII for like 40 bucks through Gamestop promotions after beating it, and later on got it back for free in a buy 2 used games get 1 free deal when I had the urge to play it again. I got an extra 40 bucks out of it, which is better than having it collect dust on my shelf for a year and a half.
