Looks like today's poll will also break 60000 votes. After going more than 3 months without a single non-contest poll breaking 60000 votes, we're going to break 60000 votes on 2 straight polls.

Yeah the site is old, but look at the FF one, VII is number 1 as I would have expected.

It's freakin' impressive OoT is that strong if it doesn't even have as much "first game bias" as one would think.

Well, the difference is that Zelda was immensely popular in America from the beginning. While FF games were popular in America, they didn't really take off to the level they're at now until FFVII.

Apparantly!

Mad respect that OoT managed to be top game even from people who weren't completely nostalgia'd.

#205 | pjbasis | Posted 2/20/2012 12:57:51 PM | message detail
Well, operating under the hypothesis that a large majority of people hold the first game in the series to be their favorite, it would be safe to conclude that OoT gathers more support from other people (that didn't play the game first) than, say, FFVII.

I should have bet money you would do that.

Well, it might not be well-tested enough to become theory, but I think it's something that is worth looking into.

I'm not saying it's not a viable theory (although I wouldn't go so far as to say a large majority of people. That's a bit too much of an assumption), but trying to use it as some sort of weird evidence that OoT fans aren't looking at the game through nostalgia-goggles is a bit of a stretch.

"I'm in an epic battle to the death, FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF!"
#209 | pjbasis | Posted 2/20/2012 1:11:55 PM | message detail
Well, not as many is the point.
There is still a large percentage that did play it for their first Zelda, and then obviously you can have nostalgia for things beyond the first game.

I was always under the impression OoT and FFVII owed their untouchable strength due to the timing of the release coinciding with a new generation of players getting into the series for the first time. To not only see two other Zelda games be in the same ballpark, but one even ahead of OoT is surprising to me.

Eh, it doesn't necessarily have to be the first in the series that you've played for it to leave that kind of impact on you. FFVII and OoT were the first games of their kind in their series, one way or the other.

I would expect SS to have almost no votes, since the game has only been out for about 3 months. Since we had this poll back in 2009, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess are all doing slightly better this time around.

Well, no kidding. Zelda is a series with a 90%+ playrate on the site. There's only so much room to introduce players to the series with the most recent one.

Having a high "first played in a series" rate is likely an advantage. However, it's just one factor. It doesn't necessarily make you the strongest in the series.

This site has a major love for the N64/PS1 generation in general though. That's why we can end up with nonsense like Mario 64 being the most popular Mario game.

1 week ago, Vita ownership was at 2.58%. Now it's almost doubled from last week, with a 5.09% ownership right now. Ownership should continue to increase throughout the rest of the poll, because this happened with the very first 3DS poll as well.

I don't know why it dropped this time around.

Anyways, the Vita has 6.68% ownership on the second US release date. For the PSP, it had 9.90% ownership on the US release date. The Vita is getting off to an even slower start than the PSP.

There's not much of a difference between the US and Europe in this poll.

Also, this was from yesterday's poll:

The Soda poll is eventually going to happen someday.

I'm more interested in the age poll or a continent poll. I really want another continent poll soon, before the summer vacation starts and we go back to having about 2 1/2 months of weekend trends.
