I was impressed with FF's performance yesterday. Shows it can still beat down lesser series, even if it can't stand up to the Legend of Zelda anymore.

Canada is extremely resistant in switching over to Gmail.

Also, Gmail is doing slightly better this time around, by looking at this:

https://spreadsheet.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdDU3eVV2bDZJSkdNcmpZRHhHQzFyR2c

There, Gmail was at 37.45% by the end of the board vote and now it has 39.51% right now.

E-mail I find isn't used that much in Canada anymore. I rarely get e-mails from someone outside my classes and given the age of GameFAQs there isn't much reason to switch to gmail even if it is a better system.

I found this poll from back in 2010:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4030&region=US
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4030&region=CA

There isn't much difference between the US and Canada when it comes to email, but there is a big difference when it comes to IM and social networking.

I found this very interesting archived page while the poll was still running:

http://web.archive.org/web/20041127185610/http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1832

Using some data I acquired by looking at that page's source code, it was archived at 1:56:10 PM, about 30 minutes before the ASV started. That poll took place back when we had instant updates. This was the final result:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1832

So AIM gained about 5% during the ASV and absolutely destroyed the ASV. Since the polls ended at 3:00 AM back then, I'm sure AIM started going back down again near the end of the poll.

I guess "Social networking" did poorly in Canada because it was something that was very unknown in Canada before Facebook entered the social networking scene by allowing anyone to register. Even then, social networking just needs more time to catch on in Canada since very few people used it before Facebook became mainstream. "Social networking" did much better in the US compared to Canada, though.

How big was AOL in Canada? I'm pretty sure a lot of people use AIM because they used to use AOL in the mid-late 90's, and AIM let them maintain contact with the people they met on AOL.

At least, that's how it was for me. Of course, soon we'll have users that weren't even born in the 90's, which means I'm probably more in the minority of that argument.

Trend charts for yesterday's email poll:

https://spreadsheet.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdDU3eVV2bDZJSkdNcmpZRHhHQzFyR2c&gid=2

Yesterday's email poll was on a weekend instead of a weekday for the 2011 poll. This does affect trends a bit, as Gmail was able to stop the bleeding around 10:00 AM instead of 2:30 PM if the poll was on a weekday. In yesterday's poll, Gmail did not lose a single update to Hotmail until 4:57 AM, although it had a tie update at 3:07 AM. In the 2011 poll, Gmail lost its first update at 3:06 AM. Also in the 2011 poll, Gmail's lead went from 1166 to 729 during its worst time, while it only went from 1798 to 1663 in yesterday's poll.

AOL Mail did best in the board vote and then had a terrible night vote and morning vote before the day vote kicked in after 9:00 AM.

Gmail remained strong for the first 4 hours, maintaining near or above 40% in the first 4 hours. Gmail's collapse happened very quickly, right before 5:00 AM. Gmail did bad near the end of the night vote and through the morning vote as well. It wasn't until shortly after 10:00 AM that Gmail stopped the bleeding and finally caught the day vote to start going back up again for the rest of the poll. In the 2011 poll, Gmail barely gained anything (about 0.50%) with the day vote at all and only started going up after 6:00 PM when Europe started going to sleep. But on a weekend, Gmail's day vote was actually more powerful.

Hotmail started out strong with the board vote, but quickly collapsed afterwards. Hotmail was slowly gaining strength as the night vote went on, until it finally started going crazy after 4:00 AM. Hotmail quickly collapsed after 9:00 AM and started bleeding percentage shortly after 10:00 AM, which would continue for the rest of the poll. The SNV was the worst time period for Hotmail as Europe was sleeping by then.

Yahoo! Mail started out strong for the first 3 hours before finally collapsing for the rest of the night vote and into the early morning vote. Yahoo! Mail performed slightly better during the day vote, but still couldn't stop the bleeding until about 4:30 PM. From that point on, Yahoo! Mail would continue rising for the rest of the poll.

"Free email service" was terrible in the first 2 hours before doing well during the night vote and morning vote. It had a terrible day vote and SNV, though. "ISP email" was terrible in the first 5 hours before doing well at the end of the night vote and continuing to do well in the morning vote and day vote. "ISP email" starts to drop off again near the end of the poll.

First time I heard of AIM was a few years ago on this site. It was MSN or nothing in Canada, just like it was (and still is) Facebook or nothing when it comes to social networking.

Until today's poll, we had 40 consecutive polls (12/22/2011 to 1/30/2012) with less than 600 votes at the freeze. Today's poll easily blew past 600 and just barely broke 700 votes. Man, it just shows that vote totals have been slightly worse than what we had prior to the last contest.

The only caveat to this poll is that it isn't quite analogous with those in 2009 and 2005, since it's asking if you've owned specific versions of FFVII as opposed to if you've played it (those who borrowed/rented obviously won't show up here, and a percentage of those who pirated it won't either).

Still, here's some percentages:

2005
- 55.3% of the site had beaten FFVII, and 75.04% had played it.

2009
- 49.27% of the site had beaten FFVII, and 70.82% had played it.

2012
- 57.94% of the site owns FFVII, and 68.37% have owned it at some point.

Doesn't appear to be much of a drop between 2009 and 2012.

#88 | Safer_777 | Posted 1/31/2012 12:55:07 PM | message detail
I think that is because the site went downhill from 2009,thus meaning that few people stay here and these are the old timers meaning the people that have played the game.

70% ownership isn't bad, really, especially for an FF game. This isn't like a Zelda game or Mario game where you get 85-90%+ ownership.

And yeah, while the play rate from previous polls was 75%, this is strictly an ownership poll, meaning you could still have 5%~ who've played the game but never owned it.

Yet another set of poorly worded voting options. If you change "Probably" to "Yes," you get a hell of a lot more people picking option 2. I can't say for certain off the top of my head that it's the worst named console ever, but I know it needs a name change and it's not too late to be rebranded. Additionally, the two just plain aren't mutually exclusive. And the bottom two options are fairly redundant to boot; the only difference that distinguishes between the two is just the voter's enthusiasm for Nintendo/the system.

The funny thing about today's poll is comparing it to an earlier poll that had "Wii U" as a poll option.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4616
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4597

Do you think Nintendo should rename the Wii U?
Yes, it's the worst-named console ever 31.34%

Which game system do you think has the silliest name of all?
Wii U 31.14%

The percentage of people that find the Wii U's name to be silly is nearly identical to the percentage of people that hate the name.

2/4/2012 - I don't know. Probably an original poll idea.
2/5/2012 - How many different versions of Madden NFL have you owned over the years?
2/6/2012 - Do you worry that you may be addicted to video games?

Lame, we aren't even getting a Super Bowl poll this year. I do find it amusing that we will get a Madden NFL poll on the day of the Super Bowl. I predict that "None, I've never owned a single Madden game" will do best during the night vote and also while the Super Bowl is going on.

You are right about that reason, but today's poll doesn't have the excitement of a 1v1 poll. Outside of the contests, 1v1 polls are very rare and have only occured with the Male/Female poll, the Super Bowl polls, or the 2008 GotY poll between Brawl/MGS4.

I actually have poll updates for the 2010 Madden NFL poll that we will be having tomorrow. The 2010 Madden NFL poll took place on a Sunday, so I can compare the trends to tomorrow's Madden NFL poll to see how Madden NFL performs during the Super Bowl.

I'd rather have the 1v1 poll because there's always people b****ing about how there's no "I don't care about the Super Bowl" option, forcing them to vote for an option they don't care about because they feel compelled to vote in every single GameFAQs poll.

That's always hilarious to experience.

The option "No, I don't have a bit of interest in it" is losing the day vote in both the US and Canada. I don't remember the exact percentages, but it had about 37.50% in the US before the day vote started in the morning. As for Canada, it had about 62% before the day vote kicked in. Right now, "No, I don't have a bit of interest in it" is down to 35.27% in the US and 59.73% in Canada.
