GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1042
Are
you honestly saying Modern Warefare 3 would be in the top 5? I'm sorry
but it wouldn't even be close. I'd take Dark Souls to beat MW3 on this
site 1v1 easily. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3727 Uncharted 2 and Dragon Age both beat Dark Souls. MW3 shouldn't be as strong as the 2nd, but I don't see why it can't at least go even if not beat Dark Souls. I think you're really overestimating it. --- http://raptr.com/badge/cf898f37d9c30ef120ada6c35e636ad3/fs.png http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
From: Haste_2 | #050 Sonic and Mega Man should probably be brought up somehow, given how badly they were roflstomped. No idea how that would be accomplished though. Also, I can't express how happy I am with how high X/Zero ended up despite being fed to Mario (and subsequently to Link). They're probably a top 5 team in the bracket in proper stats. I'd have taken them over the Snakes now that we saw how crappy Cloud looked. --- Game of the decade? More like Guru of the decade mirite? |

I
agree with the sentiments in the opener that we should make the most of
the contest. I don't, however, feel that Batman has any chance
whatsoever to beat Link. Batman's absolute ceiling is slightly above
Arkham Asylum. Acting like throwing him and a bunch of weaker guys in
and expecting them to do anything is ridiculous, and the only reason
we're even discussing it is because everyone seems so desperate to find
anyone who can possibly beat Link. This feels like a less extreme
version of the WWF No Mercy hype that happened, where a small core of
people who were passionate about a shared common interest managed to
convince each other that the next great thing was about to happen before
finding out that they thought very differently from the rest of the
site and everything fell apart. --- Bracket: DEAD (unless Waluigi proves himself as the people's champion) Battle: Still goin' |
^Lol
no one really thought No Mercy was going to win it's match. They were
just picking it on the incredibly small chance that it did happen
because they liked the game and since it was just a 1 point match
anyways it wasn't going to decide the winner of the contest (hell the
guru winner missed that match). --- Starcraft is my life, so without it I wouldn't exist. - Artosis Congratulations to SuperNiceDog for winning the 2011 Guru contest. |
From: FateStayAlbion | #051 They both beat DEMON SOULS Demon Souls =/= Dark Souls. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4454 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4476 DS is one of those games that got more popular after it came out. No doubt it's far stronger than Demons and certainly up there. I said it was 5th strongest, i didn't say the strongest. Look at Assassin on there...and look at how the game was recieved. It isn't going to do as well as Brotherhood. Obviously Batman,Skyrim,Zelda and Portal are way ahead. The only debate is hwo strong UC3 is. PS3 Exclusive Vs. Miltiplat. UC3 isn't going to be anywhere near as strong as UC2 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4507 Hype polls don't mean anything. You have to see how games did in relation to their hype. Some people thought FF13 would win GOTY just because it was FF last year. ME2 dominated the polls. I'm not overestimating it. All i'm saying is you have a Batch of games in Assassins, MW3, BF3, Uncharted 3, gears 3 and Dark Souls and for me Dark Souls is going to be the more popualr out of those, that's just my take. USing 2 year old GOTY polls for completely different games is silly. |
Kotetsu534 | Posted 12/21/2011 2:49:45 PM | message detail | quote Skyrim >> Zelda >> Uncharted 3 > MW3 = Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Skyrim will crush the multiplat poll(s), Zelda and Uncharted will make the final from their exclusive polls (along with Gears of War 3). If SBA's taking more than one multiplat game, then it's down to Portal 2 and Arkham City to fight it out. I don't think he would do more than one multiplatform game in the first overall GotY poll (not the 3-way). Last year's GotY poll already had 11 games in it, and now we'll end up with another game because of the 3DS. He should drop the iPhone GotY poll, if he wants to keep it at 11 games, especially because we'll get the Wii U and Vita next year as well. If we get another iPhone GotY poll, it will be painful to watch. The last one got under 26000 votes and site traffic is even worse compared to the start of 2011 when we had the GotY polls. Another iPhone GotY poll would be in the running to get less than 20000 votes. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |

think this contest was slightly better than the 2006 series contest, so

otherwise, please give me an explanation, though I'd prefer you tell me

Hmm...I'm
not entirely sure I like the way these x-stats shake out. See, one
thing I've always found annoying about tournaments that work out exact
"placements" using loser-bracket type games is that it can be very
inaccurate. Take, for example, the various early-season tournaments that
exist in NCAA basketball. We'll use this year's Maui Invitational as an
illustrative example. Day 1: First-round games Duke 77, Tennessee 67 Michigan 73, Memphis 61 Kansas 67, Georgetown 63 UCLA 92, Chaminade 60 Day 2: Winners' bracket: Duke 82, Michigan 75 Kansas 76, UCLA 56 Losers' bracket: Memphis 99, Tennessee 97 (2OT) Georgetown 88, Chaminade 71 Day 3: Seventh-place game: Tennessee 86, Chaminade 60 Fifth-place game: Georgetown 91, Memphis 88 (OT) Third-place game: Michigan 79, UCLA 63 Championship Game: Duke 68, Kansas 61 They allegedly have a defined 1-8 order, but aside from the champion and the last-place finisher, nothing is really terribly defined. The third-place game winner lost their match to the champion, not the runner-up, so either one could easily be the true #2, and UCLA, which had the good fortune to draw the host team (who comes from a lower division and almost always finishes in 8th place) in the first round, goes 1-2 with both losses by large margins and finishes "4th", while Georgetown is 2-1 and is "5th". Madness. But let's look at the flipside, this year's Paradise Jam. Opening rounds: Norfolk State 61, Drexel 56 TCU 57, Virginia 55 Mississippi 63, Drake 59 Marquette 95, Winthrop 73 Winners' bracket: Norfolk State 66, TCU 53 Marquette 96, Mississippi 66 Losers' bracket: Virginia 49, Drexel 35 Drake 66, Winthrop 62 Seventh-place game: Drexel 68, Winthrop 45 Fifth-place game: Virginia 60, Drake 52 Third-place game: Mississippi 80, TCU 69 Championship Game: Marquette 59, Norfolk State 57 It's still not perfect because the seventh-place finisher lost to the fifth-place finisher, not the sixth-place finisher, and the second-place finisher beat the fourth-place finisher, not the third-place finisher, but...TCU, which came in fourth, got their lone win against Virginia, who came in fifth. So at the very least, the "1-2 for fourth place, 2-1 for fifth" problem is a non-issue. Which brings us back to why I object to these X-Stats... 1. Link vs. Ganondorf – 50.00% 2. Mario vs. Bowser – 42.28% 3. Cloud Strife vs. Sephiroth – 41.74% 4. Pokemon Trainer Red vs. Pokemon Trainer Blue – 37.51% Now, I know that in the x-stats, the runner-up isn't always even in second place, but in this contest, the final was the closest match that the champion had...and the winner of the third-place match was defeated by the loser of the championship match, so the 1-2-3-4 order should be somewhat concrete. I know, the very presence of a "third-place match" wrecks the idea of X-stats, because they're based on the idea that matches should be transitive even though they aren't, but the idea that the Pokémon Trainers could finish behind Cloud and Sephiroth in the X-stats despite having a direct head-to-head win seems ridiculous. --- I'm a cat person, but I can still appreciate a SuperNiceDog. |
