GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1041
Because
everything would get tripled by the "get rid of the contests" final
option that Bacon will inevitably include. If you include Fictionals as
part of three or four other options with no "negative" poll option, I
can easily see it winning. There's no reason to believe that, the average voter is pretty apathetic towards contests and fictional characters isn't going to get a lot of people jumping up for joy. Heck the GameSpot contest had its fair share of fictional character haters. --- BOP Results: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/Rivalry%20BOP.xls Congrats to SuperNiceDog for winning the guru contest. |
All the "Yes" options have been going up since the board vote. I guess casuals would rather get Link out of here. --- http://raptr.com/badge/cf898f37d9c30ef120ada6c35e636ad3/fs.png http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
Is
it harder to picture than Red/Blue going even with Cloud/Sephiroth?
Red/Blue shows that character strength can be radically different in
this contest than in a normal character battle. Yes, actually. I can picture Red/Blue being far far far stronger than Red pretty easily. I cannot imagine what mechanic could make Cloud/Sephiroth weaker than Cloud. --- 2002 Link, 2003 Cloud, 2004 Link, 2005 Link, 2006 Link, 2008 Link, 2010 Link, 2011 Cloud. Link 6, Cloud 2 |
From: red sox 777 | #353 I would imagine Sephiroth is more heavily anti-voted than Cloud, and thus adding him to Cloud actually subtracts from his strength because now Cloud gains extra anti-votes. Some people proposed that theory before the contest started, even. --- SuperNiceDog's Guru victory dance: http://www.gifsoup.com/view/593815/frasier-and-niles-dance-o.gif |
From: red sox 777 | #1651 The rivalry factor altered things in Link's favor, it looks like. Seems that people treated Link/Ganon as a proxy of the whole Zelda series - while Cloud/Seph are just FF7. I'm pretty sure Cloud would do better than 42%. However, I doubt he gets 45%. I'd say 43%-44%. From: FateStayAlbion | #1658 We won't know until it happens (I'd take Batman over Link). And even if they can't, replacing the weak half of the bracket with strong non-VG origin characters would us a more flattened strength distribution, result in very little fodder, and much closer matches and many more good matches. On top of many surprises, since we're dealing with characters we have no data on. There is literally nothing negative about the idea in terms of providing us with a better contest. --- www.gamefaqscontests.com www.gamefaqscontests.com/gallery |
From: charmander6000 | #351 Why use the GameSpot contest, of all things, to disparage the idea? Joker and Vader freakin owned in that contest. It took Blizzard rallying to keep them from meeting in the finals, and Vader made the finals anyway. --- Yoblazer: http://i32.tinypic.com/zlf1w7.gif Watch and you'll see... SuperNiceDog own me... in the Guru! |
Considering Snake/Liquid was significantly weaker than Snake, it wouldn't be much a stretch. Don't think they were weaker, anyway. Just the same. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
I
would imagine Sephiroth is more heavily anti-voted than Cloud, and thus
adding him to Cloud actually subtracts from his strength because now
Cloud gains extra anti-votes. Some people proposed that theory before the contest started, even. But how many of these Sephiroth anti-voters would have voted for Cloud against Link in the first place? --- 2002 Link, 2003 Cloud, 2004 Link, 2005 Link, 2006 Link, 2008 Link, 2010 Link, 2011 Cloud. Link 6, Cloud 2 |
What type of contest would you most want to see held next? A standard character battle, with or without Link included. A character battle including characters that did not originate in video games (e.g. Batman, Simba, Gandalf). An all-eras games contest. A best gaming system contest (e.g. PS2, SNES, PC). [Optional: Some unusual type of contest, like "Best Item" or "Best Couple".] [Optional: I'd rather there was never another contest held.] --- Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who. |
From: PartOfYourWorld | #356 Well, yeah. It's a contest full of villains. We already saw what kind of potential that has. --- SuperNiceDog's Guru victory dance: http://www.gifsoup.com/view/593815/frasier-and-niles-dance-o.gif |
There is literally nothing negative about the idea in terms of providing us with a better contest. Sure there is. People here want a video game contest, so it would negatively effect their interest if it isn't a video game contest. Why not go to some comic site if you want to see Batman and X-men in a contest? --- http://raptr.com/badge/cf898f37d9c30ef120ada6c35e636ad3/fs.png http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
Why
use the GameSpot contest, of all things, to disparage the idea? Joker
and Vader freakin owned in that contest. It took Blizzard rallying to
keep them from meeting in the finals, and Vader made the finals anyway. While I'm not arguing that they weren't strong at the same time no one was jumping for joy that fictional characters were allowed. Seriously to the average person it would like as if Mario made the contest. --- BOP Results: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/Rivalry%20BOP.xls Congrats to SuperNiceDog for winning the guru contest. |
From: Kotetsu534 | #359 This sounds like a good poll, ignoring the optionals. --- - |
The
rivalry factor altered things in Link's favor, it looks like. Seems
that people treated Link/Ganon as a proxy of the whole Zelda series -
while Cloud/Seph are just FF7. I'm pretty sure Cloud would do better
than 42%. However, I doubt he gets 45%. I'd say 43%-44% That's what Lefty's been saying for a while, and I guess it makes the most sense out of anything (though it doesn't explain why Red/Blue is so strong). Cloud not being able to break 45% on Link 1v1 is still pretty depressing though. Depressing enough that I don't think I'd even enjoy a Link victory over Batman anymore. I was sort of looking forward to seeing Link win a new, challenging, contest, but now....... --- 2002 Link, 2003 Cloud, 2004 Link, 2005 Link, 2006 Link, 2008 Link, 2010 Link, 2011 Cloud. Link 6, Cloud 2 |
LeonhartFour | Posted 12/21/2011 12:15:29 AM | message detail | quote I don't think I ended up posting the Trainers/Cloud chart because my internet was acting up last night, so here are the last two charts of the contest: I think you missed the Link/Cloud match as well. creativename | Posted 12/21/2011 12:15:14 AM | message detail | quote Well it's only tracking the first two, but I'll keep it up until after the poll is done so we can see any trends. Then I'll delete it later. I already jumped in and started tracking the updates myself, because the updater is only doing the first two. Once in a while, I'll track poll updates on non-contest polls if I see a poll that catches my eye. I usually have a good eye for spotting polls that could have noticeable trends. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ! |
Sure
there is. People here want a video game contest, so it would negatively
effect their interest if it isn't a video game contest. Why not go to
some comic site if you want to see Batman and X-men in a contest? And some people want to see video game characters up against non-video game characters. They don't want to see it on a different site because they want to see what GameFAQs thinks. --- SuperNiceDog was not so nice to my bracket. Congrats to SuperNiceDog for winning the Rivalry Rumble Guru Contest! |
From: Kotetsu534 | #1759A character battle including characters that did not originate in video games (e.g. Batman, Simba, Gandalf). The "e.g." is very important here - people won't get the poll option without the example names. I'd put Batman, Vader there. If you want a third option, maybe Spider-Man. The second the casuals saw "Batman" in the poll they'd wet themselves. So it's very important to include the name - a poll option like "Include fictional characters" might confuse people, they likely wouldn't get it or pay attention to the option. --- www.gamefaqscontests.com www.gamefaqscontests.com/gallery |

Okay, so should we send it in like THIS What new Contest would you to see GameFAQs host in 2012? * A new regular Character Battle * A Character Battle, but with former winners removed (Link, Cloud, etc) * A Battle featuring ANY Characters who've been in video games (eg Batman, Darth Vader, Gandalf) * A new Best Video Game Contest (from all eras) * Best. System. Ever. Or should the first 2 options be combined, like Kotetsu had it? --- thengamer.com/guru thengamer.com/xstats board8.wikia.com Best Show ever? Our interview of Guru Champ SuperNiceDog! |

This looks good, and I'd expect Best Game (from all eras) to win. --- Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, our 2011 Guru Champion, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011) champion, Link. |
I like that way of doing it. --- Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who. |
From: Ngamer64 | #369 Nice, I'd leave it like that at five options. For some reason, I think five options would give the poll a better chance of being selected than four. --- Yoblazer: http://i32.tinypic.com/zlf1w7.gif Watch and you'll see... SuperNiceDog own me... in the Guru! |
So
what, at most only 15 of the perfect battle brackets got their final
pick right? I mean, I banked on Mario/Trainers and am 16th with a
Straight Pick. And I know the 10 guys above me were Perfects with
straight picks so... --- Hey, its that SuperNiceDog! Guru 2011 winner |
While
they might be true, in the end what will keep the fictional character
contest from ever happening is that it isn't relevant to the main focus
of the website. GameSpot allowed fictional characters so the people above SBAllen are unlikely to care. If SBAllen changes his mind, fictional characters are in. While SBAllen is opposed right now, I see no reason to believe that he will 100% guaranteed never change his mind. --- SuperNiceDog was not so nice to my bracket. Congrats to SuperNiceDog for winning the Rivalry Rumble Guru Contest! |
The second the casuals saw "Batman" in the poll they'd wet themselves. ..I doubt that This is Gamefaqs not IMDB |

From: FateStayAlbion | #1801Sure there is. People here want a video game contest, so it would negatively effect their interest if it isn't a video game contest. Why not go to some comic site if you want to see Batman and X-men in a contest? So
a straight pick would have netted me a prize but I would have been
outside the top 3 which is all I really cared about. Still kinda mad at
myself for effectively losing a coin flip (I was either going to go
55-59.99 or 60-64.99, made the wrong decision). Any idea on what the tiebreakers for the top guys were? --- Toronto Maple Leafs: 16-11-3, 35 Points, 6th Place Toronto Raptors: 0-0 |
I'm
thinking the Games Contest runs away with my version of the poll, yeah.
But the REAL question will be if All Fictional wins the Characters
threesome IMO. --- thengamer.com/guru thengamer.com/xstats board8.wikia.com Best Show ever? Our interview of Guru Champ SuperNiceDog! |

lord, I'm surprised that there were people who got onto the leaderboard

At
this point I think character battles have pretty much run themselves
dry for a few years. Let's do games and fictional characters, and not
come back to characters for a while. --- Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, Guru Winner, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time champion, Link. |

From: XIII_rocks | #1903 I had no idea what you were talking about (who the hell is Jane Eyre?) so I googled and got this: www.gamefaqs.com/boards/11-sballin/60143217 So apparently he doesn't like the idea of fictionals (and actually thinks Darth Sidious would be among the strongest fictionals - Sidious would be very lucky to get 25% on Batman, and Jane Eyre might well threaten to push below the 5% on Batman level). So
apparently he doesn't like the idea of fictionals (and actually thinks
Darth Sidious would be among the strongest fictionals - Sidious would be
very lucky to get 25% on Batman, and Jane Eyre might well threaten to
push below the 5% on Batman level). Yet he likes the ideas of Worst
Character/Game? Most attractive character? And Best Inanimate object? Mind. Blown. Sidious would be pretty strong IMO, but Bacon doesn't have very good taste in contests, true. It's how we got 3 4-way contests, a 2nd games contest with generation divisions, and this rivalry contest. Plus all the SFF matches that were set up. --- Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, Guru Winner, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time champion, Link. |
