Look at the strength of the Metroid series, then look at the strength of Samus/Ridley vs. Samus alone. Look at the strength of the Kirby series, then look at the strength of Kirby/Meta-Knight vs. Kirby himself. Characters relying on multiple sources for their strength disappointed in their rivalries because those rivalries generally don't represent all their sources. Heck, even Solid Snake looked off, and that's probably because as 'good' of a rivalry as Liquid/Solid is, Solid Snake draws strength from four other games that Liquid Snake has zero real appearances in. The Bosses looked real good (same with Ryu/Ken) because the rivalry is relevant to pretty much everything they draw strength from.
