not to beat up a dead horse, but last character contest's stats have
Red being equal to Ridley (Red wins with 50.25%), so if we're all going
to say that Ridley is fodder, then technically the trainers' team, which
many are considering to be the fourth strongest in the contest, is a
team made up entirely of fodder. I've never played Pokemon and am just plain not interested in the series, but I guess I could concede that Red's rivalry with Blue could be said to encapsulate the whole of Red's "character" and possibly the whole game (meaning RBY). Otherwise, I'm kind of clueless as to how a fodder-ridden rivalry is supposed to be so strong. --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |

Ridley
is based on a direct match with Cloud. Serious Sam could have broken
20% on him last contest. Just look at how hard it was for Ryu to get to
34% on Cloud. There was a clear limit to how badly one could do on Cloud

There was a clear limit to how badly one could do on Cloud directly. I suppose we could also yell "Smash Bros. boosted Ridley" and stop there. Aside from Samus and Ridley both being heavily reliant on Smash for contest strength and no one playing Metroid games for characters*, I really can't put my finger on why the rivalry would be so much weaker than Samus herself (or Metroid Prime itself). If you want to get technical, Samus vs. Ridley is one of the most "personal" rivalries in gaming - most VG villains have a goal of world domination with the heroes simply standing their way, while Ridley's main goal is essentially to kill Samus (at the very least, he's more concerned with that than he is with "world domination"). *I hope so, at least! Most of the reason why I seem to have enjoyed Other M's plot was because when it came to plot, I was far more focused on the Bottle Ship's backstory than I was in Samus's. Plus I can agree that the game was worst when focusing on Samus herself despite enjoying the game's cutscenes - I can concede that they really did make the poor sap look awfully inept, even though I overall liked her personality and (embarrassingly?) was actually looking forward to seeing Samus erupt in anger at a superior at some point in the game due to that happening in Fusion - and lo and behold, I got my wish! --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |
