Any fanbase should have the right to complain about a beloved game almost losing to Rock Band. I don't care if it was technically an upset.

An old cult PC game beating a massive fad at all (and arguably the best game to have come out of it at the time) merits literally no whining. I don't care how hated the genre is among 'gamers'.

I'm so glad I wasn't on the board that day if that's true, though, wow. I'd probably have gotten banned just from yelling at all of them.

Also, RBY only getting 51% on Rock Band 2 would've pretty much been the best result ever.

I'm with junk - I just can't see the Trainers being stronger than Charizard/Blastoise, even if the latter isn't a "real rivalry" or whatever.

I mean... they were the guys on the game boxes, they were the first starters that most people ever had, and they just flat-out kicked some serious ass. You can't understate the impact those two had on my generation.

Agreed. But only because Zard/Blastoise weren't an actual rivalry. They might as well be with all the picture time they're getting int his contest.

It doesn't matter. Red/Blue represents RBY in its entirety. Charizard/Blastoise does not. You are making the same mistake some people did when they predicted Red/Blue to be on the same level as just Red.
---
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
#307 | Janus5000 | Posted 12/7/2011 1:00:34 PM | message detail
If you picked Charmander, it may as well have been a rivalry.

Which kinda makes me wonder how far below them Blastoise/Venusaur and Venusaur/Charizard would be. <_<

SF fans have this weird sense of entitlement is all.

I just never understood the Pokemon love, and I was at the prime age when it came out. I'm still shocked at how strong RBY, Red/Blue and Charizard are/were.

I do not share the old Final Fantasy love this site has, it just doesn't have that effect on me. Doesn't mean I can't understand it.

What? Not at all. R/B/Y burned me in the last game contest and I had Charizard losing to Bowser. About the only solid Pokemon predictions I had were Pikachu in '07 and GSC in GotD

And I think Charizard/Blastoise might win straight up vs Red/Blue, and I think their strength contributes to Red/Blue in pics, though it is overstated by some. And they obviously win in 1v1.

But I think the Red/Blue rivalry would be indirectly stronger as it more strongly ties to everything RBY.

Not sure if this has been brought up, but does this affect anyone's opinion on RBY in a 1v1 games contest? A month ago, I think people were down on it being Top 3 (or even Top 5) after Majora so easily dispatched GSC. Now, I don't think I'd take any post-90s games over it, and I probably would treat it as the #3 game on the site. Doubt I'd take LttP or any Mario game over it.

RBY already personally stomped Majora's Mask so that should easily rule out any post-90s game. aLttP is still a very high mark to beat. RBY is definitely in the running but I'm not sure I would side with it to win.

I have polled my friends about this over the last month, and they are mostly casual videogamers. Pokemon dominated. Obviously, not the best sample, but still.

I think people either overestimate the broad appeal of Street Fighter or underestimate the appeal of Pokemon.

Keep in mind I"m talking about the rivalries alone here. I think in a poll among my friends Pokemon dominates Street Fighter, but in a poll of the rivalries Ryu vs Ken dominates simply because "who cares about the trainers." This whole love for the trainers thing just seems like a total GameFAQs phenomenon in my mind-- I've never heard anyone say a peep about any of the trainers in the games except like Team Rocket and Lance.

And honestly I'm more tempted to think it's just a b8 phenomenon sticking words in the mouth of the voting masses who are just franchise voting, but yeah. Just weird to me.

I think 53-47 Mario. I would LOVE to be wrong, and if they absolutely bury the **** out of Samus, I'll be thrilled. It'd be awesome if they get a huge rally going and too out Mario (and Link/Cloud) I just don't see it.

I don't like this implication that it's just a bunch of drones voting because they see Pokemon in the poll, seemingly just because you don't "get" the rivalry or because "SF fighters rivalry would in in a poll among your friends".

It's just kind of...snide and almost passive-aggressive. "ugh these voters are just drones and b8 are justifying them. *shrug* just weird to me." as if the last bit makes it all OK.

It was just augh. GTA is a legit GotD contender. The level of hype for SA was off the chart, and SA actually lived up to all of that hype. Then there's...Golden Sun. I mean what on earth.

I haven't played it, I can't hate the game, but I sure as hell can hate that result. It was kind of an outlier though - which probably made it seem worse than it was

It's not "drones" or a hivemind mentality at all. Like with the Zelda or Final Fantasy series, it's just another display of strength variance. Every Pokemon game released in the past 10 years is very, very weak. If the DROOOOOONES argument had validity, this simply wouldn't be the case, as no Pokemon game would be fodder when the series flagship is so damn strong.

RBY is just... so damn strong, and that's about all there is to it.

Again, as a guy who has been pretty heavily into videogames throughout my life, I know that Ryu/Ken is a significant rivalry and one of the emblematic ones. I don't think it's that great of a rivalry, but I admit it's one of the rivalries that I recognize the most.

But I think all the "hardcore" gamers on this site seem to expect other people to vote like them.

Fighting games are a hardcore gaming community, and doesn't have the "mainstream" appeal that pokemon ever had. To most people, they are recogniable but that doesn't equate with people caring. On the other hand, "everybody" can remember pokemon, and it had a far greater nostalgic and emotional attachment for a larger number of people.

It is silly to say "This is just a Gamefaqs phenomenon" and suggesting that Ryu/Ken do better in a poll of all gamers or the general public. Overall, this IS a "hardcore" gaming site. Moving this poll to a more general audience and I'd definitely expect Pokemon Trainers to win.

Could the Trainers win on other video game sites? No doubt.

But Trainers have more mass nostalgic appeal than Ryu/Ken.

Alec speaks truth, as unfortunate as it may be for fighting fans.

http://www.g4tv.com/vgdm/best-game-2011/bracket/

Look at the results on a site (probably) more casual than GameFAQs. The most popular "hardcore" fighting game of the year, MvC3, gets doubled by the more casual friendly Mortal Kombat, which goes on to get ****ing 85/15'd by Skyrim. Skyrim could have pushed for NINETY PERCENT against MvC3 on G4's site.
