How is this not close? O_o the fact that the winner isn't in doubt at this point doesn't change the raw numbers. People would be really into this if the contest was good and we didn't know trends et al. That's a problem with us, not the match.

Raw numbers wise, this is going to finish well above 50.5%. That could be seen as a general mark for a really close match. This match is still close, just not that close.

Match XLIX: (1) Mario/Bowser vs. (2) Sonic the Hedgehog/Dr. Robotnik

Previous Round

Mario/Bowser – 80.47%
Ike/Black Knight – 19.53%

Kirby/Meta Knight – 37.79%
Sonic the Hedgehog/Dr. Robotnik – 62.21%

Analysis

Ever since contests have begun people have been waiting for a Mario and Sonic match. Interestingly enough these two characters have appeared on opposite sides of the brackets for every character battle that they shared together until 2010 where Link stood in the way of the pair meeting each other. I don’t think anyone is considering this to be a close match, but it will deliver in the nostalgia department.

With Sonic and Dr. Robotnik essentially being Nintendo characters now do raise the question of whether or not there will be SFF in this match. Last year we saw what Link did to Sonic and back in 2008 we saw Mario having no problems against Knuckles even with Zelda being in the poll. Of course this match having a lot of meaning to some people we could potentially see Sonic avoid a lot of SFF as fans of old Sega rise up and support their blue hedgehog.

Mario and Bowser have a good chance at breaking 60% on Sonic should they pick up a lot of SFF. Before SFF I feel Mario and Bowser could potentially hit the high 50s, especially considering the strength difference between Bowser and Dr. Robotnik. Either way I hope this match brings back memories of the SNES Genesis console wars to a lot of people.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Mario/Bowser > Kirby/Meta Knight

charmander6000’s Prediction: Mario/Bowser wins, 59.47% - 40.53%

Going back to a previous topic (since I've been away all day for our best match of the contest), I'm not saying Squall/Seifer is a comparable rivalry in terms of the "boost" it provides when you compare it to Red/Blue.

The point is that Seifer being weak on his own doesn't mean Squall/Seifer is a weak pairing, because I think FFVIII fans think it's a solid rivalry. We've already seen that it doesn't matter if a character is weaker individually than the other pairing if voters think the rivalry is better. I don't see Sora/Riku having a substantial "rivalry" advantage over Squall/Seifer. That's a push. FFVIII beats KH1 or KH2 in a Games Contest. Yes, Squall may lose a bit of the "KH appeal," but Squall doesn't lose to Sora.

red sox has a different perspective of these contests from pretty much everyone else, so it's understandable when you don't understand where he gets his ideas from!

By any metric, this is a close match. Saying otherwise is nonsense.

Oh hey, I was reading this topic and had pretty much this exact same thought right before I read this post.

Good call!

Would anyone support asking Bacon to hide Geolocation for the next contest? It wouldn't really help that much when it comes to identifying trends, but it could help somewhat, albeit other than MvC2/NSMBWii I can't think of any matches that Geolocation itself made the match less suspenseful.

Geolocation really doesn't predict much of anything. Just because things are a certain way in Geolocation at a certain period of time doesn't mean they'll remain that way.

It's definitely a close match by any reasonable definition. It's just not a super-interesting one, because KH was a very large favorite after the first hour. We knew Dante would fight back overnight but figured he couldn't stand up to the KH day vote, and that's what happened.

Looking at the updates, seems like there was one small period in the afternoon where it seemed like Dante might have some momentum, but it didn't last long. Clearly this was because the US was watching football and the US is for KH, so when football ended the Americans can back and voted Sora again >_>

But in terms of predictability of trends and such, it's the same problem as always - we know these entrants. We have years and years of data. We need new, popular entrants that are unknowns whom we have no data on. Strong entrants that will draw votes and generate interest.

When that happens, the discussions around here will start getting very vocal and we'll have things to debate and analyze again.

Cloud beating Link would be the most interesting thing that could happen at this point, and maybe Frog/Magus will give us yet another epic match. But even those things couldn't save the contest because 90+% of it has been very dull.

Why don't we ask him to hide the current percentage too. That way no one knows who is winning until the end of the match, thus building suspense :P

No, we don't need to hide information in an attempt to make things more interesting. If anything, I'd support expanding geolocation to include actual votes from each place. I've always wondered how much each time zone spikes at 3 PM.

I think Seifer kind of reduces Squall to FF8 only, much like Ridley does to Samus. it's only one match and before a site shift, but Squall was worth 35% on Snake in 2002 and like 43% after, and that's with a boosted Snake.

anyway, best match of the contest and a match ten years in the making and nobody posts for the final hour of the match. yikes.

Link pretty clearly SFF'd Sonic last year. He may not be Nintendo, but he's inextricably linked to it.
