Harry Potter would probably beat Sherlock Holmes, however IMO he wouldn't be elite. Not "badass" enough or whatever to really be elite in terms of strength, despite how well known he is. I'd take Link to triple Harry Potter.

PartOfYourWorld posted...
Way more people, even on a gaming site, will recognize the name "Gambit" than Ezio or Altair. Probably Dante and Kratos as well.

^ This. Yoblazer knows what he's talking about. On this site, the name recognition for Gambit would definitely be much higher than guys like Ezio or Altair and very likely higher than Kratos as well. Not sure about Dante though.

Gambit would be very well-known amongst this site's demographic. Remember that a lot of these VG characters aren't that well known by the average visitor. And many of them like an Ezio would mainly only be recognized via picture, and that most are only familiar with him from commercials and such, not actually being fans of him or his series.

Most of us around here are only familiar with a lot of these types of characters because of these contests, and would not know them otherwise.

Gambit would have no trouble beating Ezio or Altair. I'd be confident he'd beat Kratos (though not positive). Gambit vs. Dante would be interesting. I'd go with Dante there,

Magneto would probably blast Dante though.

this is not a choice. ezio 100%

He would still pound the likes of Guybrush into the dust. People need to focus less on, "can these characters actually beat the elites?" and more on "are these characters more worthwhile than our usual fodder?" The answer to the second question is a resounding "YES!"

I'll grant you Dante being a tough match, but Gambit would smoke Ezio. Ezio just got torched by Donkey Kong because something other than character design was brought into the picture. Gambit is a member of the X-Men, and that's more than enough. I'd take secondary X-Men characters like Storm or Magneto over Ezio/Altair.

Speaking of which, since this match is going nowhere and Dante may not even get the lead, let me try to make...

The Noble 9 of Superheroes
Batman
Spider-Man
Wolverine
Superman
Iron Man
The Hulk
Captain America
Deadpool
Gambit

I just threw that together. I could have easily missed some big guys.

It's a lot less impressive than the Noble Nine of VG characters once you get below Batman and Spiderman. But of course superheroes are only one subset of all non-VG fictional characters.

The further away you get from superhero characters the better off a fictional character contest would be. Needs more Indiana Jones.

(this contest still doesn't do much for me. i would much prefer a real games contest without any split by eras before any of this totally kills off my interest!)

Deadpool, Gambit would be no where near the top 9 superhero characters, especially if you add in villains (e.g. Joker, Magneto). Deadpool particularly doesn't belong there. People who know Deadpool love him, but he's not as widely known.

I don't think Captain America would be top 9 either.

It's a lot less impressive because the list is inaccurate and does not at all represent the strongest 9 superhero characters. Much like your list that included Genie :)

I wasn't sure about Deadpool either, but I remembered this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3888

That's not bad at all. He's clearly a ways beyond other cool characters like Nightcrawler and Punisher, who themselves are way beyond less cool characters like Beast.

As for Gambit, it's always seemed to me like he was #2 behind Wolverine. Gambit was just huge back in the 90s. It's possible that I'm not giving Magneto enough credit, but I think Gambit would be up there.

And Joker... well, he could theoretically be the third strongest comic character (I don't see anything that unreasonable in taking him over Wolverine or Supes). I'm struggling to think of a single (character driven, so no CoD) piece of entertainment with more cultural impact than The Dark Knight over the past few years. Joker could be a contest monster, but I kept my list to heroes only.

The problem with Gambit is that he's been neglected badly ever since the 90's. He would still be ok, but I doubt he's even top 15 superhero material at this point(assuming villains are included).

True, that could hurt him. The fact that Deadpool did so well in that poll suggests that a good chunk of GameFAQs has kept up with their comics since the 90s (or they just really loved the Wolverine movie, in which Deadpool apparently had a nice part).

I don't get why every comic book fan assumes that every person who cares about comic books even a little follows them well enough to know Gambit has been irrelevant for the past 10 years. A lot of people just don't know. Gambit would get good strength from uber casual comic book fans who just think the cajun dude from the 90s cartoon was cool.

Real X-Men fans love Gambit.

But nobody else cares. Magneto would get tons of strength from the recent trilogy and reboot. Meanwhile, Gambit's exposure to the casual crowd since the X-Men Evolution cartoon is basically a cameo in the most forgettable x-men movie ever.

I don't think the problem is comic fans getting mad.

It's the people who haven't been exposed to him in a decade (if at all, for the younger people) and thus don't care.

Really? It almost feels like the other way around with me. I'm pretty casual, having not really followed X-Men (or comics in general) since I watched the show and collected the cards as a kid. I love Gambit. The hardcore fans - the ones who actually read comics and talk about em on this board - seem to hate Gambit. They call him "90s trash." =(

Or like if Batman were in Link's half, taking Joker all the way to Link.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. I don't think a lack of exposure for a decade matters too much. It's why Crono continues to do well in our contests. And yeah, the way I see it is the way Yoblazer says it-- mostly cause casual fans don't know that Gambit hasn't been relevant, really.

Maybe not the "hardcore" fans, I don't know it that well.

But you watched the show and collected the cards.

That puts you in the more strongly X-Men fan group than most people. Especially younger people.

Who the f*** is Gambit

I have little faith in fictional characters. I feel their strength would be based on what prominent games they were in. Batman's strength would stem from the Arkham games, which would make him powerful but not even close to Link. I don't know if I'd even take him over Crono.

You bring up an interesting point in that we don't know if people voting in the poll are going to be coming at this from a purely video game standpoint. It's possible since this is a game website and people are used to having only video game characters in the poll. This is important because Batman in general is obviously way stronger than Batman the video game character.

Dante has finally started to make a move during this hour. He could end up cutting over 100 votes this hour after losing the first 4 hours.

I'd probably say this match is likely over, given that Dante only has a 54% advantage in Europe.
