~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

If anything, I think people are underrating possible anime characters we'd get. More people watch anime than read comic books on Gamefaqs. I'd take Goku to take out most comic book characters outside of like Batman, Wolverine, Spiderman and Joker.

Do people go see those movies that aren't already fans? Maybe I assumed too much but I didn't think people who didn't care about the comics would be the ones going to see the movies.

Well, its not like I'm arguing Batman wouldn't be strong. But I don't see X-men movies making characters like Nightcrawler or some other random X-men anything more than fodder. And I know you'll bring up the game argument again, but even the characters in MvC wouldn't be boosted any higher than fodder level.

The big names should have strength, but after that there would be a big drop off and theres no reason to sacrifice characters with good strength for fodder fictional characters.

Battler and Archer have had some of the worst day votes I've seen in those vote in polls. VNs have the same fanbase so thats probably what you'd see.

Characters like Goku, Naruto and Ichigo might be able to hold up during the day though. Kids love those characters

Think DBZ are the only anime characters that would have any strength worth mentioning, and they wouldn't be all that strong these days. Spidey could probably breeze through 70% on Goku (though there's always the lack of data factor which would make for interesting discussion anyway).

Can't really think of any other anime characters that would be above low midcard level at best. (obviously excluding the Pokemonz)

You are really just being absurd now. As I've said many times before - the 64th strongest disallowed fictional character would crush the 64th strongest allowed VG character. Just crush them. Fictional characters have faaar more depth. I mean that's not even debatable, the field of characters who are disallowed absolutely dwarfs the "originated in a VG" character field.

For instance, Nighcrawler is a good example. Is Nightcrawler truly among the 128 strongest possible disallowed entrants? There's a good chance he isn't.

But Nightcrawler would murder Professor Layton or Eddie Riggs or junk like that.

We've talked about the "top tier fictionals" like Batman, Vader, Spider-Man, and Homer Simpson so much that it almost feels like they've already been in contests. In that sense, I might be more excited to see how lesser guys like Nightcrawler do.

And Gambit. I'd take Gambit to beat Dante and crush any other "appeal" character like Ezio.

Plus if you're going to use the "Other Media" reasoning, what does Gambit have? I know he's in MvC2, but that doesn't mean much since a good amount of the characters in that game would be fodder. I'm not even sure if I remember him in any of the X-Men movies (though I've only seen the first two).

Ask that same question for any super-awesome-appeal-character. Way more people, even on a gaming site, will recognize the name "Gambit" than Ezio or Altair. Probably Dante and Kratos as well. Gambit is from the 90s. He got big the same time everything else that crushes on this site got big.

Some good movement for Dante in the last half-hour, but the 3 AM projection isn't good. Things have gone poorly over the past 2 hours.

Based on Dante/Riku, Sora/Riku win with 51.55%.

One thing that may mess things up is that the Dante/Riku match was 25 hours, being on the day of the fall time change. Plus trends are just generally weaker nowadays than in 2008 due to the site being older. Not sure who those factors would help though.

Dante had better hope those 2 things do matter a lot, because a deviation of 1.5% from established trends from 3 hours into the match is quite rare.

I would like an all fictional characters contest just to see how Sherlock Holmes would do. I think he would be a top 5 fictional character and would beat any video game character besides Link/Mario/Cloud/Seph/Snake.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3672

There are a lot of readers on Gamefaqs and this is one of the most read series ever. At least some Sherlock stories end up being read in a lot of High Schools. Then there are the dozens of movies (he is the most portrayed movie character ever) and TV shows. The only thing that might hurt him here is while there are a ton of video games based on him none of them are particularly popular.

Also Sherlock's Europe vote would be amazing. He would probably 60-40 the second best Europe character there at least.

EDIT: He HAS been the second most popular X-Men character since the 90s. It's been Wolverine-then-Gambit for a lotta years.

Well, what do you think the average voter can tell you about Dante?

I think Gambit can make a serious run at beating our king of appeal characters. Gambit has the look and, because of his 90s fame, can actually muster some childhood nostalgia, something Dante can't really do.

I'm sure if there was a poll: Have you ever seen a Sherlock Holmes movie? it would get pretty close to that. There are an enormous amount of Sherlock Holmes movies. I'd be shocked if the majority of people who had read both series didn't prefer at least the character of Sherlock Holmes as well. In a series vs series I could see Harry Potter winning but if the character Harry beats Sherlock Holmes then that would be worst Gamefaqs poll result ever.
