Gestahl too, I would think?

Not really a rivalry. Just Kefka backstabbing him.

Hey, if Ramza/Delita is a good enough rivalry for people just based on their differences in ideals, then Terra/Kefka can be a rivalry for the same reason, why not.

Wow, this is really, really bad. Terra and Kefka are better as a rivalry than they are alone (unlike their opponents today), but not *that* much better. More practically, I'd take Tidus/Jecht to rock them without too much of a problem - stronger game, better in-game rivalry, better dynamic in Dissidia. That means the Bosses would arguably have an outside shot at Samus (she'll rise, but Bosses would have done better in a 24 hour match), and that's something I didn't even remotely entertain in the realm of possibility at the beginning of the contest.

To say nothing of the Trainers/Fighters, who have simply looked more impressive. Samus is going to have to bank on a touch of non-transitivity to get to Mario, I think.

Funny thing is that Samus/Ridley is probably the better rivalry today anyway. I can't even remember if there was any dialogue between Terra and Kefka.

Assuming you have her in your party of 12, Terra will be the one who launches into the war of words with Kefka right before the final battle. It's a pretty memorable scene to me, and I suspect to many other fans of the game.

It's certainly more than Samus/Ridley, which has literally nothing outside out-of-game sources and one game I haven't played that gets blasted by much of the internet. They uh fight. And Ridley steals a hatchling. And they fight some more.

Yeah, since Kefka wipes out all of Terra's kind and then attempts to use her a a weapon to conquer a world, it is a very legit and powerful rivalry.

Cyan and Kefka would be a rivalry as well - though their interactions are more limited than Leo/Kefka, what Kefka does to Cyan is beyond nightmarish.

Kefka is really one evil ****er, and for that reason can be considered the rival of a lot of characters.

Zylo the wolf posted...

Now watch Samus being unable to double Terra/Kefka tomorrow!

Looks like I underestimated the FFVI duo a lot, but this makes me even more confident that Ryu/Ken will beat Samus/Bossfight IF they get past The Trainers...

Or maybe my foolish The Bosses > SMAUS pick wasn't a foolish pick after all....

Now watch The Bosses lose to Chris/Wesker!

No one noticed this earlier, but Terra/Kefka finally got their first cut. When they pulled it off, they also got a second one in a row.

In the past, I've only bothered to do 1 zero bracket attempt per contest, although I chose to do 2 of them for this contest. The 2 zero bracket attempts were almost identical, with the exception of the Phoenix/Gordon match. Prior to the start of the contest, that was the match I felt would give me the most trouble. This was before I had any idea that rivalries would matter.

I really wanted to see Samus/Ridley at least match Ryu/Ken's performance to like their chances reaching the Final Four...and this is not that performance. They better hope Terra/Kefka are really this good of a team, because I'm still not sold on that idea.

If the Bosses don't embarrass themselves tomorrow, I'm probably taking that upset.

#442 | WhiteLens | Posted 11/25/2011 5:25:42 AM | message detail
Unless you think that Terra/Kefka simply represents FF VI as a whole, which does pretty well in the game contests, or that they're much stronger than Fox/Wolf as a rival pair, this doesn't bode well for Samus/Ridley at all.

Well, at least we all know who to pick for battle.

Not sure why everyone is crapping on Samus here. It's clear that there are several factors to explain this:

1) Low votals are helping older Square characters. We've seen this all contest with the FF and Chrono Trigger folks.
2) Dissidia and Dissidia 2 have clearly boosted Kefka and Terra. Even look at their performances in the last CB for further proof.
3) Sprite pics have resulted in massive overperformances for Old Square in the past. See angel Kefka.

I'm a little surprised with how close this is, but we also have all day for the percentage to go up again. I still think Samus beats Ryu/Ken and thrashes the Bosses next round.

Stop worrying. This is clearly a sign that Terra/Kefka are the new Cloud/Sephiroth. Samus will finally beat Mario and get her revenge from 2005.

You know this contest sucks when the only thing to look forward to is random Ulti trolling.

I still think Samus has enough raw power to beat a non-iconic rivalry like Bosses (although that match will certainly be in question now), but yeah, she's dead against either the Trainers or Fighters. Either of those teams would be winning more easily here, and I very much doubt non-transitivity would help Samus in that case, Noble 9 or not.

1. Older Square hasn't exactly looked that good. I'd say Terra/Kefka have been the exception here, not the rule. I don't think you can call Cecil/Golbez's performance good after what we saw the Trainers do to Luigi a few days ago. I'm willing to give Raiden/Vamp a little credit, but that wasn't really a strong performance for Frog/Magus. Not really seeing any boost from Crono's performance either.
2. Yes, but you're looking at them as a pair doing better against Samus/Ridley than Kefka did against Bowser and Terra did against Squall individually. That's not a good sign for Samus.
3. That one I'm more willing to buy than anything else.

Also, I'm wondering how much Samus is actually going to rise here. Samus has always been very balanced in terms of trends. She doesn't have a strong day vote. No ASV today means that Terra/Kefka may not get hit as hard as they usually do, too.
