If Games Contest had aired in the peak GameFAQs years, they'd have gotten just as many.

When we had the Games Contest and Character Battle in the same year (2004), the Character Battle outdrew it. Same with the Series Contest and the Character Battle in 2006.

Pretty sure the 4-ways in 2007 and 2008 had more votes than the Games Contest in 2009 (but someone would need to confirm that), and the Character Battle in 2010 had better vote totals than GOTD.

That may all be a strange set of coincidences and the Games Contests all came at times of low traffic compared to Character Battles, even when they were conducted closely together, but I dunno.

With these terrible votals, and if site traffic keeps on declining at the rate its been for the last two years, this may very well be our last contest.

You're right, Bacon will probably blame it on people not caring about contests anymore, not that his contest idea was a flop.

Best Series Ever 2006 - 121917
Character Battle 2006 - 121677
Character Battle 2007 - 136178
Character Battle 2008 - 134028

Series Contest barely beat out the Character Battle, but both 4-way contests beat anything from the traditional 1v1 format. 2007 had the L-Block run to boost site traffic and the votals as well, but 2008 was during the peak of site traffic on GameFAQs.

I know some people here won't like it, but they really need to bring back the 4ways. Those are the ways to bring in the votes.

I really do have to question the ability of 4-ways to bring in the votes, because all 3 of them were run during a time that GameFAQs had reached its peak in site traffic.

Could just be false correlation, considering the peak of the site's popularity was during those contests.

Still not going to bring too much people back, if any at all. People just don't use FAQs anymore, and most people certainly don't come here for the message boards at least >_>

So there really isn't anything that can be done to save this place.

Also, there's not really much reason not to have contests if you're going to keep having POTDs, because they still outdraw regular POTDs. Bacon might have to continue to reduce prize amounts, but unless contests start getting outdrawn by regular POTDs consistently, they'll probably continue.

This contest is bringing in votals that are similar to regular POTDs. From the votals I saw in round 1, they just barely outdoing the average votals on regular POTDs. Dante/Vergil and Crash/Cortex were the only 2 night matches under 24000 votes (just barely) and they would only get about 44000 votes in a full 24 hour match, votals that are below the average of 49925 for regular POTDs from September 1st to November 2nd. I guess by the end of this contest, average votals probably fall around 55000.

Man, that 2007 final...

L-Block, Link, and Cloud drew way more votes individually than any 12-hour match we have seen this year. L-Block and Link will probably end up outdrawing most of the 24-hour matches for the year, and even Cloud could end up outdrawing one or two. Hell, even Snake, who was subject to some terrible Fourth Place Factor (enough so that Cloud doubled him), outdrew the entire Dante/Vergil and Pac-Man/Blinky matches Luster just mentioned.

Giving people more options will make it easier to vote. You're more likely to find someone you want to vote for with 4 options than 2.

I've been thinking ever since Hitler -- we'll never see another week like the L-Block week again.

in my mind, we had three great peaks in contest history -- 2002's final week, 2004 games's final week and L-Block's final week. I don't think we can ever hope to recapture that. L-Block mania was totally unique. even the regs were having fun with it until our precious Link got defeated.

What was great about 2004's final week? There were two great matches (CT/LTTP and SC/SSBM), and that was it. No real climax or anything. Decent ending, but 2004 was pretty up and down in terms of momentum. LTTP/FFVI-LTTP/CT was just as good, almost.

Edit: Even if 4-ways were the reason votals increased (no real reason to think that as the site's popularity was also at its peak during that time), it was only 10%, which is less than the amount votals dropped since the last contest.

Ah, yes, I remember when many people were worried that the entire final four would consist of Zelda games in that 2004 contest. Haha.... yeah, I guess it was 4 Zelda games in a row that lost, starting with the Wind Waker at the end of Round 3.

Do you think a couple of nailbiters in the second round could lead to significantly more vote totals and overall contest enthusiasm?

To be fair to the Series and '04 and '09 Games Contests, they were all held in the Spring, while the character battles in those years were held in the summer. I don't know about GameFAQs, but on other sites frequently by young people, site viewership jumps up big time once school ends.

This isn't necessarily true. It's not like we see a big spike in vote totals when you give them 5, 6, 10, or 12.

There have been 1406 votes in the past hour, and the votes are just going to slow down even more until the end of the poll. So it's probably only going to get around 2400-2500 votes in the past 2 hours, so it might fall short of 50000.

Match XXXIV: (3) Kirby/Meta Knight vs. (2) Sonic the Hedgehog/Dr. Robotnik

Previous Round

Kirby/Meta Knight – 58.47%
Jill Valentine/Nemesis – 41.53%

Sonic the Hedgehog/Dr. Robotnik – 73.12%
Katherine/Catherine – 26.88%

Analysis

I’m surprised that a lot more people aren’t hyping this match. Sure Sonic defeated Kirby in the previous contest, but this contest has produced different results due to rivals and strengths of pairs. Then you have to consider that the board is hungry for an upset. You would think people would latch on this match considering Kirby did break 45% since we saw them.

In terms of rivalry boost I do feel that Kirby and Meta Knight provide a stronger one. Sure Sonic and Dr. Robotnik is iconic and known by a lot of people, but we’ve seen icons struggle to produce results in the past. On the other hand Kirby and Meta Knight have more of the respect that is needed. In terms of general strength Meta Knight would probably have no issue against Dr. Robotnik, even considering his performance against Ganondorf all the way back in the villains contest may have had SFF.

Last round Kirby and Meta Knight did as expected and may have done a bit better had the match been in the day or even 24 hours. Of course as expected isn’t good enough if you want to win here. Sonic and Dr. Robotnik fell to meet the board’s expectations, but we’ve never seen Katherine and Catherine in action while the picture may have garner them a few votes.

When I made my bracket I felt Kirby and Meta Knight will out rival and out strength the addition of Dr. Robotnik and while the first round does not make me any confident it didn’t show me that Kirby and Meta Knight wouldn’t be able to live up to that expectation. Kirby and Meta Knight are going to need to come up with a decent lead before the European vote comes in as the day vote should be fairly even between the two. Even if the upset doesn’t happen we should have our closest match yet.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Kirby/Meta Knight > Sonic the Hedgehog/Dr. Robotnik

charmander6000’s Prediction: Kirby/Meta Knight wins, 51.05% - 48.95%

Hmm, Crono finished with 45277 votes in that match, so maybe it's possible. In fact, only the Dante/Vergil, Pac-Man/Blinky, and Siegfried/Nightmare matches would fail to break Crono's vote total if they ran for 24 hours.

Looks like this match will definitely break 50000 votes, but just barely.

The site is dying......and I kind of doubt we'll get a 2002-esque final week to save this contest. Though, that contest had a horribly boring first round too.

Just give me my Mario/Crono rematch now that votals are this low, Bacon!

2002 was an uneventful first round that was dominated by blowouts, but we didn't know what to expect, and it was exciting.

The problem now is that most of these matches are blowouts and were never in debate, so it's not even interesting BEFORE they start.
