This match is now right on par with Ike's votals and will likely fall behind soon (this is after it was up by at least a couple thousand early on).

3:10 PM was when this match ahead of Ike's votals by 1551. Since then, the Ike match has finally broken even with this match at 8:22 PM and there's still about 3 1/2 hours left. This match should end up finishing about 300-500 votes behind the Ike match. Total rallied votes should be about 1500, and that's for both sides though.


With round 2 starting later tonight, we'll get to see how many votes they can get in 24 hours. The night matches from this contest had an average of 28354 votes (about 53000 votes in 24 hours). The Trainers had the highest votals, at 34363. Crash/Pac-Man had the least, at 23857. Also, it seems like votals have just gotten worse since the first week of the contest. We just finished round 1 with 7 straight night matches with under 30000 votes. Site traffic appears to be increasing this month, based on this:

We hit rock bottom at the end of September, but the spike in that graph is right around the release date of Skyrim. The increase in traffic doesn't seem to have any impact on the votals yet. I'll wait until the end of this month to see how they fare.

That seems slightly below what I'm thinking. I would say it would be about 45000-60000 votes in 24 hour matches. In fact, only the Trainers match from this round would end up breaking 60000 votes in a 24 hour match.

another contest, another Mario SFF round 2 match. feels like it happens every year.

15. Link/Ganondorf vs. Amaterasu/something

man, this isn't even going to be fun. you can argue it should be lost solely because Link is going to go so big that it'll make the whole contest feel pointless.

14. Squall/Seifer vs. Siegfried/Nightmare

this match has some implications for round 3 vs. Dante/Sora, but damn if it's going to be actually interesting.

13. Mega Man/Wily vs. Zidane Kuja

this'll be an easy doubling if not worse, and then Mega Man gets fed to Link. oh well, at least there's another one of him in the bracket.

there's some X/Zero vs. Sub/Scorp hype in my head that makes me curious to see how this goes. in reality, it's no better than MM/Zidane.

another easy match. curious to see if Pac's 'rivalry' can do some good or if Snake can prove he's worthy of Cloud.

10. Cloud/Seph vs. Kratos/Zeus

no one votes for 15 minutes. Cloud/Seph should thrive in this match because man, this site does not want to back Kratos.

9. Samus/Ridley vs. Terra/Kefka

Samus has been piled on since before her first match. time to see if she's legit or a fake. no, The Guy isn't a barometer at all.

8. Bosses vs. Chris/Wesker

Boss has a showdown with Samus coming up; also, Chris and Wesker went to town in round 1. curious to see how close they can hang in round 2.

7. Sub/Scorp vs. DK/KK Rool

Sub/Scorp won't be threatened here, but DK might be more iconic than Sub/Scorp to some. plus, Nintendo. also, X/Zero waiting in the wings so if Sub can pull another huge result, this match could get some more discussion.

6. Ryu/Ken vs. Fox/Wolf

same as above. Ryu's setting up for the Red/Blue matchup and people have been really hyping them as a top 5 pairing (which seems crazy to me, but what do I know). if they can do 70% here, I'll believe in them.

5. Red/Blue vs. Luigi/Waluigi

what a goofy match. I really have no idea how this goes. Red/Blue should win, and maybe even win big, but I can't say I truly know what's going on.

Based on your average for night matches, adjusted we should get about 51k-53k votes a match, but the last few matches have been below the average which makes me feel we'll get under 50k.

4. Phoenix/Edgeworth vs. Alucard/Dracula

should be an easy win for Alucard... but I don't know, I don't feel completely comfortable here. low votals, Phoenix, blah blah blah.

3. Sonic/Robotnik vs. Kirby/Meta Knight

I'm truly scared of this match. I don't care if you guys aren't. I won't be amazed if Sonic runs away with it, but at the same time, Kirby's almost definitely going to be ahead at the beginning (after brackets) and could really spook Sonic here.

2. Chell/Glados vs. Frog/Magus

I really have zero idea what to expect here. Frog/Magus always underwhelm me but Chell is a nobody. feels super weird having a nobody like Chell beat a pairing from a top 5-7 game on this website, but here we are.

1. Dante/Vergil vs. Sora/Riku

there's a surge towards Dante here. I really am looking forward to seeing how this goes. I am pretty firmly on Sora's side, but something about it feels like it could be special, you know?

Analysis

Round 2 and now we’re in for matches with 24 hours, say hello to vote trends and slightly higher vote totals. When SBAllen asked for suggestions for a new contest my suggestion and probably a few other people was to make the contest have 24 hour matches once we were down to 32 entrants. It allows voting trends to emerge and it only adds just over 2 weeks to the contest which isn’t too much.

This match was never going to have much debate, especially since Mario and Ike had a match against each other in the last contest. Overall I feel the match is going to be a larger blowout than the near tripling that we saw in the previous contest. Bowser obviously adds more strength to the pairing and trumps any rivalry strength that Black Knight would add though to a player that has played both series I wouldn’t necessarily say that Mario and Bowser will gaining a lot more from rivalry factor.

I wasn’t impressed with the performance Ike and Black Knight had last round. It could have been The Great Mighty Poo gaining joke votes, but I do feel that Smash fans abandoning Ike and Black Knight because they never played Fire Emblem and thus don’t know about the rivalry had something to do with it. Honestly I feel Mario and Bowser could ride the SFF wave to an almost 80% win. Not the best way to start 24 hour matches.

Kirby's almost definitely going to be ahead at the beginning (after brackets)

Kirby never grabbed the lead in their 1v1 last year. Sonic held at 54% pretty much the whole 12 hours.

Looks like Sora/Riku will clear 60% here and could maybe have enough time to go for 61%, but maybe not. It might be interesting to see how many people thought Hitler would advance when it ends too.

Overall average probably ends up being about 52000 like you pointed out, but of course this is round 2 instead of round 1. And round 2 matches should bring in slightly more votes than round 1, just because a lot of fodder has been knocked out. Between September 1st and November 2nd, non-contest polls only averaged 49925 votes, so round 2 matches will be just slightly above that.

every contest has lame matches.

There's something to be said for 24-hour affairs, though I think I prefer 12-hour ones. For one thing, I definitely think a 24-hour epic is better. A Frog/Liquid, or even a Sonic/Crono.

Yeah, Sonic/Kirby was 53.76% at the freeze. Kirby/Meta Knight got off to a great start against Jill/Nemesis for sure, but I really don't think this match turns out all that close. Meta Knight is better than Robotnik 1-on-1, but this isn't as simple as "Kirby + Meta Knight >= Sonic + Robotnik."

Well, it's a more legit result than Kirby's win!

And I'm not so sure I agree Meta Knight brings more to the table, because I think that, while Robotnik is pretty weak on his own, paired together with Sonic, it makes for a "classic" rivalry. I can't see Kirby/Meta Knight winning this because of RIVALRY FACTOR

I took Kirby and Meta Knight because I felt Meta Knight brings more to the table than Dr. Robotnik. Either way I feel that match will be closer than what it was last year.
