IIRC, Luigi was leading against Squall at the freeze.

I don't think there was a freeze then, and I don't think Luigi was winning at 5 minutes. Could be remembering wrong.

The Snakes would need to get 68.22% on Crono just to be equal to Sub/Scorp. Any higher than 68.22%, and the Snakes would be able to beat Sub/Scorp

In 2003, there was a freeze after 5 minutes and then we had 15 minute updates afterward, if I recall correctly.

Yes, CJayC implemented 15 minute updates after Samus/Sonic F5ing nearly crashed the site.

I forget why he got rid of them after 2003, but we had instant updates again until Kefka/Vercetti, for obvious reasons.

The reason why there was such a shock about Squall/Luigi was because Luigi was winning when the poll freezed, and then Squall was destroying on the next update.

Squall is ahead of Cloud's percentage at this point in time, so if he continues rising at the same rate that Cloud did, he should break 77%. Although I'm not really expecting that to happen, as Laharl has a better night vote than Lloyd/Kratos.

Sometime between the end of the 2003 contest and the start of the 2004 contest, the poll start time was changed to 3:00 AM EST. I did find these archived pages:

http://web.archive.org/web/20030808024830/http://www.gamefaqs.com/
http://web.archive.org/web/20030925184103/http://www.gamefaqs.com/

In the first page, it says "Last Updated: Aug 7, 2003 5:16 PM CST", but it says "Last Updated: September 25, 2003 11:07AM PDT" on the second page. Looking at the site news section for the second page, it sounds like the poll start time was changed to 3:00 AM after the contest ended.

I'm guessing the 15-minute updates were abandoned right after the contest ended and instant updates returned on non-contest polls.

I remember the 3 AM start time back in 2005 when it was a hassle for me to stay up late to steal the first vote during the contests. I don't anything about the poll start time prior to 2002, but it was probably 1 AM back then. I don't know if anyone remembers exactly when we switched over to a 3 AM start time, but I guess it happened on the first or second non-contest poll after the end of the 2003 contest.

But anyways, since we switched over to a 12 AM start time, the closest thing to a poll starting at 3 AM was on 10/16/2011 when the poll started at 2:22 AM because of a poll glitch. Vote totals were kind of terrible in the beginning with that start time, with just 192 votes at the freeze.

Start time was definitely 3 AM for Games 2004. Fall 2008 start time was 12 AM. But other than that, all of the other start times are correct for the matches. For "CB VIII - Winter 2K10", the start time was 12 AM and 12 PM (due to day/night matches) and the contest ran from 1/16/10 to 3/21/10. And for the GOTD contest, the contest ran from 10/20/10 to 12/24/10 and the start time was 12 AM and 12 PM (again, due to day/night matches).

Not bad at all. Crono/Lavos probably hit 42% in a full 24-hour match. If the rivalry and/or Liquid being stronger than Lavos is worth just 3%, that puts Crono at 45% on Snake, which is right what Missingno and Sephiroth say. I have a bit of a dilemma now though. Do I vote for Cloud or Snake? Obviously I greatly prefer Cloud and want to see him win the contest, but voting for Snake helps Crono in the x-stats.

Well you should wait and see if the match is close. If Cloud needs your vote or not.

Though I do find the concept of voting for x-stats quite awkward :) Now if I truly and fully have no preference I might vote to shift to my Oracle, but really one vote will rarely even cause a decimal point shift so best to vote for your fave.

Well, 1 vote isn't going to make your favorite win either. I think my large preference gap on this, plus the importance of the match, mean I should just vote for Cloud.

I voted for my oracle in Megaman/Earthworm Jim in the last minute and got a couple people to do the same to try and get a perfect prediction (and got it). Can't remember for sure if it actually made the difference, but continuous updating definitely helped there.
