WTF,
the current poll didn't close at 12:00 AM like it should have. This
same **** happened last year shortly before the GOTD. Oh boy, we might
be in for a long 2 day poll if Bacon doesn't notice the poll didn't
close. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

I
picked Kirby/MK > Sonic/Robotnik, but in retrospect, both Kirby and
MK get most of their strength due to SSB so perhaps I shouldn't jump so
quickly on individual character strengths. Time to change that pick. I took Samus/Ridley to the final four, but in retrospect that was a bad decision. It was based mostly on Ridley being able to wipe the floor The Boss and Ken, but I really have a feeling that "less storied" Nintendo rivalries are going to be bombing in this contest in comparison to stuff from, say, FFs or MGSs. It doesn't help that Nintendo in general is on a downswing, what with this site apparently caring more for the new Elder Scrolls than for the new Zelda. I have no idea on the Pokemon trainers vs. the premier Street Fighters, and it doesn't help that I haven't played a game in either series (or at least, it has been FOREVER). I picked the Street Fighters because Ryu was more impressive last year than Red and because...oh yeah, it doesn't help that Ryu/Ken extends across an entire series while, to my knowledge, Red/Blue is in only one game and no one plays Pokemon for plot - in other words, Red/Blue will bomb just like every other Nintendo rivalry. Still I wouldn't be surprised if the trainers beat the street fighters. Haha the IWBTG dudes made it. --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |
Okay, some words I have on the "big three" Nintendo rivalries plus some others: Mario/Bowser - To my knowledge, the only Mario games where Bowser is really much of a constant presence are Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, New Super Mario Bros. (and this is being fairly generous - I haven't played this game but somewhere I heard that Bowser is both the first boss, the penultimate boss, and the final boss), and both Super Mario Galaxies. In Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser is little more than the final boss - essentially playing some version of Lavos' role, but given "character". ...can't really say much more. Link/Ganondorf - Okay, I think I went over this earlier, but let's discuss Ganon's presence in all the major Zelda games: Zelda 1 - Supposedly the main villain, but only appears as the final boss. Zelda 2 - Silhouette appears in the Game Over Screen, but that's it. A Link to the Past - Same role as Zelda 1 Ocarina of Time - First time he becomes more than simply the final boss, being a constant presence throughout the game...then again, I don't recall any appearances from Ganondorf in this game outside of the final boss room aside from when Link and Zelda first notice him as kids and just a little before the first mandatory visit to the Temple of Time. Majora's Mask - Completely absent. The Wind Waker - Probably the major Zelda title where he plays the biggest role in the story. Twilight Princess - Once again little more than the final boss, and not even the major antagonist for heaven's sake. Skyward Sword - Completely absent, supposedly. That's TWO games he plays a major role in, out of which one of them is the supposed "black sheep" of the 3D Zeldas on this site. He's going to bring Link down, and I have nothing else to say. Samus/Ridley - Analysis once again! Metroid - Just a boss. Metroid II - Completely absent. Super Metroid - Now this is where Ridley truly becomes the major antagonist. Metroid Fusion - Just a boss. Metroid Prime - More or less plays an identical role to his Super Metroid counterpart (except...I'm not sure you could place the blame on any one character as being the antagonist of the Prime series!). Metroid: Zero Mission - Appears twice, once as the final boss, but he's clearly not the main antagonist. Metroid Prime 2 - Completely absent. Metroid Prime 3 - Appears twice once again, just like in Super Metroid, Prime, and Zero Mission, but both times he's...just a boss. Metroid: Other M - OH NO, FREAK LAB EXPERIMENT!!! *goes into PTSD* (what's sad is that I actually like that cutscene, albeit mostly due to Ridley finally being given the movie monster treatment he deserves...but when you more or less consider Samus to be a female Mario, you're not going to care for story or personality) Sonic/Robotnik - I don't think this has mattered in a major Sonic game ever since the Genesis days. --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |

Also,
I may just be tired because I've been traveling a bunch the last couple
days, but this bracket doesn't excite me. Nothing there really stands
out at me as a "Man, I want to see that match." Some of it may be
because I just don't know what to expect from this contest yet, but eh. Glad Squall/Seifer got a 1 seed in a very winnable division, although they're going to get an SFF beatdown from Cloud/Sephiroth for all their trouble. Speaking of Cloud/Sephy, why are they facing Link/Ganon in the semis? I know we're approaching 10 years since the first contest, but I don't think anyone wants to see Link/Mario SFF for a finals match. I
dunno about you guys but Chell/GlaDOS could be such a wildcard here.
Very recent, very popular games... and individually they are crap, but
paired together, it actually is a very well known and well liked
rivalry. If people take the concept of this bracket seriously instead of
just voting for the more popular characters I could see them winning
the division. --- http://www.last.fm/user/VinnyMendoza "This is all we have... when we die.." |
Quick
question: Do they ever show Chell's face (other than you getting a look
at her face through an adjacent portal) or do they ever refer to her by
name in Portal 2? If not, she could have the Gordon Freeman problem, pre-HL2. Being paired with GlaDOS should help, but I wonder how much people really care about Chell. --- http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2011/8/22/2094c2de-bae8-4f5b-9f27-67eaff0aaeaf.jpg |
I'm pretty sure neither Chell nor GlaDOS have their name referred to once in either Portal game. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
Chell's
face doesn't get face-time outside of looking through portals, but she
also gets some Ratman-art through-out the game and Steam's shown her
face plenty. Her name's never said, though you can find her name
written in Portal 2. Doesn't Wheatley call GLaDOS by name? Cave
Johnson does too, kinda..... --- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg Nominate E P O N A. |
I think Wheatley just says 'her' a lot. Chell/Glados has the potential to be strong, and it deserves to be, but I don't really trust GameFAQs to make the connections! --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |

You know, I just realized Phoenix/Edgey vs. Gordon/Breen is a 12-hour night match. Yep, I'm pulling the trigger on it. match might be a good thing for Phoenix, as he's good in Europe. I

Well, 12-hour night match is the best possible setup for Phoenix Wright. I'd worry a lot in a 24-hour match or a day match. As far as Gordon's trends go, he only had day matches in 2010, so that doesn't help. In GOTD...HL2 lost the ASV for L4D2. Lost the 2nd night vote period to GTA3 and GoW. Lost the ASV but won the 2nd night vote against Prime. No night matches for HL2 in GOTD either. So that's a big tricky. Looking at 2008, the night vote is his best time, but that's what I would've figured anyway. --- http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/ab48/Leonhart4/Squall.jpg |
Gordon is a night character as well, but it's hard to find a character more night-oriented than Phoenix. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |

Phoenix/Edgey needs the following things: 1. For people to actually take the rivalry into account because Phoenix/Edgey is a great rivalry and from what I've heard from others, Freeman/Breen isn't that great 2. For Breen to be as bad or worse than Alyx Vance 3. For lots of Phoenix Wright hype from other games to help him out But Freeman/Breen barely outdoing Raynor/Kerrigan kinda makes me think it won't do so hot here. --- Support Barret Wallace (Final Fantasy VII) for Character Battle IX! http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3834/banner1barret.jpg |

Crono has to face Solid/Liquid in round 1? So unfair! Good thing Frog/Magus got a good seed, so they could go pretty far. Alucard/Magus suggests that picking Frog/Magus over Alucard/Dracula is a bad idea, but when there's any doubt, I'm going to go with CT. --- 90s games > 00s games |

I picked Phoenix Wright to R3 in the first 2010 contest and then picked
Phoenix Wright > Mario Kart Wii in the second one and both backfired
right in my face. I'm not picking Phoenix again. Phoenix struggled to
break 40% on Gordon BEFORE the Orange Box, remember? --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |
After setting up Sephiroth/Crono in round 3 last year and now THIS, I'm convinced Bacon has it out for Crono. Haven't read the topic yet, but I'm guessing most people are going to end up taking Link/Ganon because of Skyward Sword? If it's like 80/20 or more for Link, I'm going to keep Cloud/Sephiroth as my pick. I think they've got a very real shot there even with SS coming out, and without it they're the favorite in my book. I have Red/Blue losing to Mario/Bowser right now: pretty sure that going by pure character strength, they'd lose before that, but that's about as good of a "rivalry factor" as you're ever going to get. My first instinct was to take Kirby/Meta-Knight over Sonic/Robotnik because Sonic and Kirby are pretty close and MK easily beats Robotnik. Plus it feels like a better rivalry by a bit (though I could be wrong on that). --- 90s games > 00s games |
How is Red/Blue supposed to be a "rivalry" factor? It's only in one game, and in that one game you... ...on second thought, I guess Pokemon is more plot-oriented than I thought. Just to ask, how often does Red face Blue in Pokemon RBY? I wouldn't know because last time I played anything Pokemon was in 2003. --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |
Friendly reminder: Crono hasn't won a match since 2008. I hate you too. Although, I guess Crono made the final in 2008 and we didn't have a 2009 character battle so it's not so bad. I guess it's like in baseball where you should be satisfied with 1 world series every 8 years......here you have to be satisfied with 1 finals appearance every 8 years. --- 90s games > 00s games |

As much as I love CT (despite having only played it for the first time mere months ago), Crono himself just doesn't matter THAT much to me. That seems to be how most of the board feels about Crono anyway. For instance, Chrono Trigger itself is always in the upper echelon of strength in board contests, but in "Character of the Year 2010", Crono lost in R3 (albeit in the "wildcard round"). --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |
Crono round 1 exit again. This is beginning to become humorous --- It will launch for $350 with some Wii Sports s***. I bet my life on it. Damn, that KoolAid guy is awesome - NGamer64 |
That's
definitely true for the board. CT has always been a top tier game on
this board (since winning NGamer's original board games contest in
2003), while Crono has never been more than a midcarder. On Gamefaqs
though, they're pretty similar with CT being a bit stronger (relative to
other games of course). So we've lost 20% of our voters since last year right? Or is it more than that? Say Snake/Crono is 55/45, as per last year's stats. If the 20% of voters who left split 75/25 in favor of Snake, Crono can do this. Alright everyone, it's time for HOPE AND CHANGE. --- 90s games > 00s games |

It's no secret anyway that GameFAQs has awful taste when it comes to characters. It's a little better when it comes to games though, and I'm hoping that GameFAQs will choose wisely for rivalries. Also as far as that banner...man, I forgot that ZSS' Brawl incarnation had that much hair. I still like the hilarious pose though (although if it was meant to emphasize Samus's breasts, I sure didn't notice - otherwise, it kinda looks like a ferocious predator ready to pounce on their prey). Why do people care so much for "breasts" again? For me it's always the face that grabs attention first, then the outfit. I barely ever notice the b-things. Is this another product of how little exposure I had to fiction when I was younger? --- Currently Playing - StarCraft: Brood War |
So we've lost 20% of our voters since last year right? Hard to say. We only had 4 24-hour matches during the last contest (including the bonus match) and it's hard to come to a conclusion about the average vote total for the 24 hour matches because there were only 4 of them. For this contest, we will have 31 matches that are 24-hours, so we'll know for sure if we are going to deal with 2002 level vote totals again. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

Hi
Luster, if you have the numbers could you post the average votals for
the 2010 character contest and games contest? I seem to remember votals
falling about 20% between those contests in the span of like 6 months.
And the 2010 character contest is the relevant one here, since that's
the last time we saw characters in action. I'm thinking we may have as much as a 33% decline in votals from that contest to this one, which could create some really big shifts. The shifts wouldn't be very predictable, of course. But it would be likely that we'll have a big shift of some kind, a la 2003, 2005, or 2008. --- 90s games > 00s games |
