Before voting, I thought that Raiden/Vamp should have been leagues ahead of the rest. Is Banjo that good, or is Raiden weaker than we thought?

How about rivalries matter?
#104 | MarquessLaus | Posted 10/4/2011 3:37:47 AM | message detail | (edited)

What?

Rival:
1. One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.
2. One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect.

If anything the people who were nominating heroes/villains are the ones who are technically wrong. The "neutral" relationships are much more like rivalries than things like Link/Ganon Cloud/Seph Mario/Bowser which aren't rivalries at all.

With neutral, I mean that they don't much care on a personal level. I mean, with Link/Ganon and Mario/Bowser, yeah I need to stop you to save the world but that's it. With Cloud/Seph, yes, Cloud wants to save the world and Sephiroth wants to destroy it, but beating and sticking it to each other is very clearly an important goal to them too. Initially it was Cloud's modus operanti, and even after he got his head in order he was like "yeah we all want to save the world, but i'm also here to settle the score with Sephiroth, and i want everyone that doesn't have selfish personal reason to fight to go home."

Sephiroth goes out of his way to include Cloud into his plans to get him back for killing him.

Two more examples, Vamp and Raiden care, at least by the time MGS4 rolls around. They seek each other out, go all "this is my fight" Vamp doesn't want anyone other then Raiden to kill him, Raiden sheats his blade so he can fight him on even more even terms.

Yuna and Seymour? They're both summoners, they're on opposite sides, Seymour is totally obsessed with Yuna. Do they care how good their summoning skills are in proportion to each other? No. Or at least it's so far down on their priority list it doesn't matter. That's not what they are about.

It's getting harder and harder to believe Marcus Fenix made it to the third round back in 2007 with each poll he gets into nowadays.

Right on the heels of Gears 3, and Marcus/Skorge is going to be lucky not to finish dead last by the time this thing's done.

Yeah, it's too bad. That franchise is amazing, but I can see why he would have a lot of haters on this site.

To be fair, Marcus caught Halo 3 hype in 2007. Then the site shifted away from Halo and Gears to Call of Duty, then the site shifted away from casual shooters all together (including GTA).

And yet GameFAQs still seems to care more for casual shooters than it does for most cult RPGs. As an example, the fall 2010 stats have Modern Warfare 2 > Persona 4.

I believe it hasn't been said yet, but who makes the cut in the vote-ins doesn't seem to be directly dependant on the ranking within the poll. I checked GotDs vote-ins, and the deciding factor were vote-totals, not vote-percentage or a fix number of entrants from each poll.

If I had to guess, I'd say the top 40 noms got in, and we'll get 4 polls to determine the remaining 24 rivalries.

24 is a lot, that would mean anything below a 10 seed wouldn't automatically get in the contest. Based on the last contests the polls will determine the remaining 14 rivalries.

Remember that (I'm pretty sure) these polls never follow a strict Top 4 Gets In format. Bacon just looks at whats cores the highest %s in all polls, and goes down the line. One poll can have 5 guys get in if they're close, while the other can have 3 if the top 3 blow out the rest too much.

With that choice of rivalries, I'd be shocked it it was anything other than a 64-entrant contest. We'd be running into time-constarints with a 128-bracket any way, so that's another hint that we'll do 64.

I guess we're looking at a short contest then. 64 entrants is 63 matches, if the 32 16 and 8 rounds are half-days that's just over a month for it to play out.

If we did that, the contest would only be 35 days. I'd rather have 12 hour matches for round 1 only, because that's a 47 day contest and we can easily get it done if the contest starts before the end of this month.

Dat Top Option doesn't apply in a poll where people select which option describes their situation, but rather one where nobody cares about any of the choices. There it always applies because it's the best joke reasoning ever.

#138 | -LusterSoldier- | Posted 10/4/2011 9:50:06 AM | message detail
The only way to fit in a 63 day contest before Christmas:

After the Vote-Ins, we would need to get our bracket so everyone can fill out a bracket. If that happens on October 10th (next Monday), there would be a 10 day entry period. Entries would close on the night of October 20th and the contest could start on October 21st. That would be just enough time to complete the contest before Christmas and still be able to get a bonus match.

Presumably, this poll is pretty even (I'm going to make a guess this will be the most even of the polls) so the winning options should be pretty safe. At least the top 3, and I think the top 4 should be pretty safe as well.

Hard to make an accurate guess without knowing the rest of the field I know, but there will almost certainly be some real fodder in the other polls somewhere as well as a straggler powerhouse.

I know it's already been said, but this is a TERRIBLE showing for Lightning...

Lightning pre-release against Sonic: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3738
Yuri Lowell against Tifa: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3792

...despite those polls, Yuri/Flynn are nearly doubling Lightning/Barthandelus, and that's ignoring them being in last place in a twelve-way poll where Raiden/Vamp are winning. Here's a list of every character/game that's been in last place for a vote-in before:

Jigglypuff (with Missingno+Mudkip+Toad[+Hibiki+Scorpion+Yoshimitsu if you want fighter-LFF])
Andrew Ryan (with Big Daddy)
Doc Louis (with Ridley)
Emil Castagnier
Jade Curtiss
CATS
-
Killer7
Ikaruga
God Hand
Company of Heroes
-
Lightning/Barthandelus (with Yuna/Seymour)

When Jigglypuff is your strongest representative of this category and your best excuse is "It's Barthandelus's fault" (despite few people caring about Seymour), you're in bad shape...

...and then there's the game itself. FF13 was once THE reason to buy a PS3, then it stole E3 by going multi-platform...yet it ended up bombing incredibly hard; it barely made the top five multi-platform games last year. It's anecdotal evidence, but I've also never met a person off GameFAQs who enjoyed FF13.

For a series this big -- GameFAQs or elsewhere -- FF13 looks to have been a big failure. We last saw Lightning's strength as her fans wanted to feel about her...but -- while this poll can't accurately picture Lightning one-on-one -- now we're seeing her strength as her fans ACTUALLY feel about her.

She's dropping the next time we see her one-on-one, and I might even feel that way if FFXIII-2 comes out before then. Getting a release was the worst thing to happen to her.
