GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1003
abdou posted... Gamefaqs seem to have lost a lot of traffic in the last couple of years. Not sure why. I'm really starting to worry this might be the final contest. It really isn't drawing the hits anymore it once did, so C-net might feel its getting to the point that its really not worth doing. --- http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/4479/467785-one_piece_we_go_super.jpg http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
We'll still get more votes than GameSpot's contest did, so we should be fine. --- http://www.gifsoup.com/view/593815/frasier-and-niles-dance-o.gif |
If they take away the prizes/money then Allen can do as many contests as he likes, I doubt Cnet (CBS?) would care --- .... |
LeonhartFour posted... We'll still get more votes than GameSpot's contest did, so we should be fine. But will it really be that many more than the current poll of the days? Like we average about 50k a day for those... the last contest was about 80k a day, but thats due to two matches a day. With a contest that has less total interest, that may fall to 60-65k if its 2 a day... Might even be 50k if its full day matches. Will that minor boost (if it even gets a boost) really be worth in their eyes? --- http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/4479/467785-one_piece_we_go_super.jpg http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
From: GintokiSaotome | #454 That's usually the case, yes. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed." |
We've
been averaging about 50000 votes a day since the start of September.
We should be able to get about 60000 to 80000 votes a day on 24 hour
matches. If there are night/day matches, that should be about 30000 for
a night match and 50000 for a day match. And GameSpot's contest was getting around 40000 votes throughout the contest. The final didn't even break 40000 votes. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Has there ever been a year when a 24 hour contest match poll wasn't the highest vote pulling poll for that year? --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!) |

If there are night/day matches, that should be about 30000 for a night match and 50000 for a day match. Those kinds of vote totals sound like something based on the last contest, which not only had more interest from people, but also was during a time the site had higher hits overall. I'm sure it would be lower than that. According to Alexa, the time before the last contest, Gamefaqs was about the 700th ranked site. Now its 1100th. --- http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/4479/467785-one_piece_we_go_super.jpg http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |

Has there ever been a year when a 24 hour contest match poll wasn't the highest vote pulling poll for that year? I don't think so. That came close to happening in 2010 when an age poll was only about 300 votes away from breaking Link/Cloud in votes. The 2010 age poll only needed about an extra 7 minutes to break Link/Cloud in votes. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/60518130 I wonder if something like "Worst Contest Ever" will get the most nominations. You
know, I was fully intending to be extremely picky about what qualifies a
rivalry and rip away whenever a more neutral antagonistic relationship
gets the majority vote throughout this contest, I'm gonna be
disappointed if it gets named something else. --- When you've got a pretty-boy monkey on your back constantly calling you a puppet, you hardly want to seem like you're happy to be used. - DSakaCharanJ |

yoblazer never responded to this post I made: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/60429133/673538248 That was when I commented on his thoughts about yesterday's poll. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
From: BlAcK TuRtLe | #461 I'd lean more toward game-focused Wikis. God knows Wikis were a godsend when playing, say, Fallout 3 compared to navigating a FAQ to find what I'm looking for. In the end, it's just that there's just better alternatives to GameFAQs these days. --- Wylvane Guru Contest Winner Black Turtle is a wonderful user. |
Wikis > FAQs. --- Black: 3310-7431-2094 |
I've
also heard that the JRPG genre is in serious decline on this site and
that was the genre that FAQs were most useful for. The decline of the
JRPG genre is another reason that traffic is dropping off. Although
WRPGs are being more common, they haven't been able to fill in the void
left behind from the decline in JRPGs. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
From: -LusterSoldier- | #467 It is really strange. The FPS and fighting genres suffered the most. Maybe shooters and Smash Bros. were just a bigger deal back in early 2009. CoD was still really popular and had not yet been milked dry, and people were still playing Brawl (also SFIV hype?). The MMO option also suffered a bit; I can't hypothesize as to why. --- Yoblazer: http://i32.tinypic.com/zlf1w7.gif Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
Look
at the total votes for each poll. Now imagine which votergroup would be
most likely to stay on GameFAQs: RPG junkies, or FPS junkies. There you
go. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
A good point. Wow, votals have really dried up. In another couple years, Ulti will be able to buy this place for pennies. --- Yoblazer: http://8board.webs.com/ariel.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
Are
people still using FAQs frequently? It seems like these days if you're
stuck in a game you can just throw it into YouTube to get actual video
of what you need to do. --- peace comes from within |

Wikis
tend to be what people go to, nowadays. Want to know about one random
quest in a game? Just type it in the search bar, boom. GameFAQs, as
useful as it used to be, is outdated. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
PartOfYourWorld posted... A good point. Wow, votals have really dried up. In another couple years, Ulti will be able to buy this place for pennies. This is very exaggerated, though. GameFAQs has lost a lot of traffic, but it's still ranked in the Top 1000 overall, I think. There's still plenty of time to turn things around. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
MarquessLaus posted... You know, I was fully intending to be extremely picky about what qualifies a rivalry and rip away whenever a more neutral antagonistic relationship gets the majority vote throughout this contest, I'm gonna be disappointed if it gets named something else. What? Rival: 1. One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor. 2. One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect. If anything the people who were nominating heroes/villains are the ones who are technically wrong. The "neutral" relationships are much more like rivalries than things like Link/Ganon Cloud/Seph Mario/Bowser which aren't rivalries at all. --- Starcraft is my life, so without it I wouldn't exist. - Artosis |
No,
Yoblazer is right. Traditionally, most of the value of internet
companies has come from their growth rates (and expected growth rates).
And even with non-internet companies, growth rate is very important
towards that company's valuation. Negative growth is really bad. --- 90s games > 00s games |

Yeah,
I feel the same way. There are so many outlets now that can help you
get past trouble spots in games that using FAQs isn't as useful as it
once was. --- peace comes from within |

To
illustrate this point with completely made up numbers, suppose Gamefaqs
brings in 1 million in profit a year and declines at 10% a year vs.
grows at 10% a year: Year | Growing | Shrinking 1 | 1100k | 900k 2 | 1210k | 810k 3 | 1331k | 729k 4 | 1464k | 656k In just 4 years, profit under 10% annual decline is less than half what it is under 10% growth. The market value of the site will be far less than that, since it is forward-looking. --- 90s games > 00s games |

Eh, I don't think there's any reason to close it down even if popularity dwindles. It'll just become a really small site. Also, I made a mention of this in another topic, but I wonder if the vote-ins will feature any overlapping rival pairs, like a poll featuring both Crono/Magus and Frog/Magus or something. --- "Why must we always choose between certain death and probable death?" Overlapping rival pairs could appear in a vote-in if neither one of them got enough nominations to avoid the vote-ins. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

While
Youtube might be more helpful for something like a platformer or action
game, I can't imagine it'd be that helpful for an RPG, or something
more strategy based. I don't want to sit through however many minutes of
a Youtube video just to know where all the armor in a FF game is
located. Probably one of the reasons behind that increase in the poll
that Luster posted. --- "Ahem! There is *sand* on my *boot*!"--Kefka Black Turtle beat me, Yesmar in the Fall 2010 Guru Contest! |
