Gamefaqs seem to have lost a lot of traffic in the last couple of years. Not sure why.

I'm really starting to worry this might be the final contest. It really isn't drawing the hits anymore it once did, so C-net might feel its getting to the point that its really not worth doing.

We'll still get more votes than GameSpot's contest did, so we should be fine.

If they take away the prizes/money then Allen can do as many contests as he likes, I doubt Cnet (CBS?) would care

But will it really be that many more than the current poll of the days? Like we average about 50k a day for those... the last contest was about 80k a day, but thats due to two matches a day. With a contest that has less total interest, that may fall to 60-65k if its 2 a day... Might even be 50k if its full day matches. Will that minor boost (if it even gets a boost) really be worth in their eyes?

We've been averaging about 50000 votes a day since the start of September. We should be able to get about 60000 to 80000 votes a day on 24 hour matches. If there are night/day matches, that should be about 30000 for a night match and 50000 for a day match.

And GameSpot's contest was getting around 40000 votes throughout the contest. The final didn't even break 40000 votes.

Those kinds of vote totals sound like something based on the last contest, which not only had more interest from people, but also was during a time the site had higher hits overall. I'm sure it would be lower than that. According to Alexa, the time before the last contest, Gamefaqs was about the 700th ranked site. Now its 1100th.

I don't think so. That came close to happening in 2010 when an age poll was only about 300 votes away from breaking Link/Cloud in votes. The 2010 age poll only needed about an extra 7 minutes to break Link/Cloud in votes.

I wonder if something like "Worst Contest Ever" will get the most nominations.

It does confirm we're getting vote in polls, at least.

I'd lean more toward game-focused Wikis. God knows Wikis were a godsend when playing, say, Fallout 3 compared to navigating a FAQ to find what I'm looking for.

In the end, it's just that there's just better alternatives to GameFAQs these days.

I've also heard that the JRPG genre is in serious decline on this site and that was the genre that FAQs were most useful for. The decline of the JRPG genre is another reason that traffic is dropping off. Although WRPGs are being more common, they haven't been able to fill in the void left behind from the decline in JRPGs.

It is really strange. The FPS and fighting genres suffered the most. Maybe shooters and Smash Bros. were just a bigger deal back in early 2009. CoD was still really popular and had not yet been milked dry, and people were still playing Brawl (also SFIV hype?). The MMO option also suffered a bit; I can't hypothesize as to why.

What?

Rival:
1. One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.
2. One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect.

If anything the people who were nominating heroes/villains are the ones who are technically wrong. The "neutral" relationships are much more like rivalries than things like Link/Ganon Cloud/Seph Mario/Bowser which aren't rivalries at all.

No, Yoblazer is right. Traditionally, most of the value of internet companies has come from their growth rates (and expected growth rates). And even with non-internet companies, growth rate is very important towards that company's valuation. Negative growth is really bad.

To illustrate this point with completely made up numbers, suppose Gamefaqs brings in 1 million in profit a year and declines at 10% a year vs. grows at 10% a year:

Year | Growing | Shrinking

1 | 1100k | 900k
2 | 1210k | 810k
3 | 1331k | 729k
4 | 1464k | 656k

In just 4 years, profit under 10% annual decline is less than half what it is under 10% growth. The market value of the site will be far less than that, since it is forward-looking.

Eh, I don't think there's any reason to close it down even if popularity dwindles. It'll just become a really small site.

Also, I made a mention of this in another topic, but I wonder if the vote-ins will feature any overlapping rival pairs, like a poll featuring both Crono/Magus and Frog/Magus or something.

While Youtube might be more helpful for something like a platformer or action game, I can't imagine it'd be that helpful for an RPG, or something more strategy based. I don't want to sit through however many minutes of a Youtube video just to know where all the armor in a FF game is located. Probably one of the reasons behind that increase in the poll that Luster posted.
