GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1002
Yup, I've been on the West Coast for a month.....and probably will be for a long time! --- 90s games > 00s games |
Interesting. I haven't been on the west coast before. Based on the early results for Europe and Oceania, it seems like Skyrim will use the night vote to build up a good lead on Skyward Sword. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Who was it that told me Skyrim wasn't the most hyped game this year? ;) Glad to see it doing so well. Batman in third is also a good sight to see as it definitely deserves it (I would put it number 2, but ZeldaFAQs and all). I'm hoping Assassin's Creed makes a jump over the two major FPS games (Battlefield/CoD), but everything else is ending up pretty nicely. --- Calling Pokemon RBY a top 10 game was the most insane contest jibba-jabba ever Woe unto he who sig bets with the near-invincible Lord High creativename |
From: XxSoulxX | #153 I'll admit being wrong. Even if SS wins GotY, it certainly doesn't seem like it's the most hyped game of the year leading up to release. --- Yoblazer: http://i44.tinypic.com/5nw45i.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
Zelda no chance --- peace comes from within |
I'm
really interested in seeing another series contest to see how much
damage Elder Scrolls can do this time. I don't see it doing anything in a
characters contest, and a games contest is hit or miss as well. Series
though, I see it being really strong. --- Good Times, Great Memories |
From: XxSoulxX | #156 Abandon ship --- http://i848.photobucket.com/albums/ab48/Leonhart4/Squall.jpg |
I'm
pretty sure I also said Zelda was more hyped on this site. I was
wrong.....I'll be looking out for a dramatic shift in site demographics
like the Nintendo Boost of 2005 or the Deboost of 2008, though it seems
pretty unpredictable where it will be. The main thing is probably the
loss of many of our voters and older userbase. --- 90s games > 00s games |
I think one thing is certain: WRPGs are pretty significant here now. --- http://i54.tinypic.com/2m47kmg.jpg http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
From: red sox 777 | #158 Eh, Japan still dominates the contests. It's not like Elder Scrolls tore the last contest a new one or anything. It did what most people expected. EDIT: I'm referring to Oblivion. Morrowind did have that exciting win over Warcraft III, but I can't remember how huge an upset that was, and it was over another Western game anyway. --- Yoblazer: http://i44.tinypic.com/5nw45i.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
Heck, it let TTYD get a lot closer to it than people really expected. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed." |
Oh,
I rather doubt we'll get a major shift to Western games as Albion has
been hyping for a while. But the chances are pretty good that we'll see
some kind of big shift given how many voters we've lost. --- 90s games > 00s games |
I
don't think this has anything to do with a voting shift or anything
like that. There's nothing released for Zelda, so no one has anything to
care about. TP and every game before hand had trailers, events,
articles, and everything in between months before release date, which
sent fans in a craze. There's nothing for SS, so the hype is much
quieter then before. Skyrim has everything and the kitchen sink out for the viewing, and it just caught the hype train that Zelda decided to skip. The site's demographic is still the same, they're just waiting for that next trailer or two. --- Good Times, Great Memories |
I
don't think it was a bad idea to assume a new Zelda would be the most
anticipated game of the year. I did always think -- and argued! -- that
it was really out there to call it the most hyped game since Brawl,
though. There was nothing suggesting that one. --- peace comes from within |
Well,
I don't think those 2 are all that different. We haven't had much
that's been hyped since Brawl. I guess MGS4, but it came out the same
year as Brawl so I wasn't really thinking about it when saying that. --- 90s games > 00s games |
I've been calling ME3 the most hyped game since Brawl/MGS4, although I'm openly biased. --- Yoblazer: http://i44.tinypic.com/5nw45i.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
We
haven't, that's true, but I wouldn't single Zelda out as being
particularly notable either. It's just another game this holiday going
by 'hype.' --- peace comes from within |
I've been calling Sonic Generations the most hyped game since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but I'm openly delusional. --- http://i.imgur.com/fe05x.png |
remember
when a lot of you guys said Zelda would win because it's Zelda? yeah.
Skyward Sword is so underwhelming to most people right now. it could
still win once people realize there's a Zelda game they like, but Skyrim
should clearly be the favourite. --- xyzzy |
From: FateStayAlbion | #142 No , people are sick and tired of COD. Black Ops done bad last year too. MW3 will do even worse. Battlefield 3 has more votes than MW3. This poll is a joke without Uncharted 3 because that would have comfortably come in 3rd place. I would have voted or it. Having said that Skyrim is winning for 1 obvious reason. Skyward Sword is the least hyped console Zelda to date while Skyrim is massively hyped. --- http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l271/Mithos_2006/DarkSoulsDIE.png |
When the ASV comes around, Zelda will too. |
damn,
Skyward Sword getting SPANKED right now. Where is the hype for this
game? I keep forgetting there's a brand new 3d Zelda coming out in a
couple months after 6 years of waiting. --- http://www.yourgamercards.net/trophy/a/NathanDrake90.png |
Skyrim just had a clean sweep of the entire US. Skyrim won every single state, along with DC. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
What
a hit to LoZ:SS's chances to win the GotY. This has been a big year
for LoZ. so a clear loss here was crucial. After you add Pokemon B/W to
this mix (which already has Super Mario 3D), it's going to be
vulnerable to our wildcard UC3 and our current-leader Portal 2. If
Skyrim/UC3/Portal 2 all made the overall-GotY, LoZ:SS could even be
eliminated before it could redeem itself in the final-GotY. LoZ:SS better be a killer-ap --- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg Nominate E P O N A. |

It'll likely be Skyrim/UC3/SS in the final. --- http://i54.tinypic.com/2m47kmg.jpg http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
In
past years, only one multiplatform game makes it into the first GotY
poll (not the 3-way). We had an 11-way GotY poll earlier this year for
the 2010 games, so adding another multiplatform game makes it a 12-way
poll. And with the 3DS being released this year, there would end up
being a 3DS representative in the GotY poll, making it 13 games if you
allowed 2 multiplatform games in. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Looks like I was wrong about SS's invincibility. I did identify Skyrim as the biggest threat, at least! --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!) |
That's
been the case in past years, yes. SB's recently added new focus to
multi-platform games though, so -- with a year like this -- I wouldn't
rule out any new changes that may provide more credit to the
multi-platform games either. --- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg Nominate E P O N A. |
For
the 2010 GotY polls, he had 2 days of multiplatform polls and the games
with the top 7 highest percentages moved onto a third multiplatform
poll to decide the one multiplatform game that should be in the overall
GotY poll. So SB didn't change the GotY polls so there would be 2
multiplatform games in the overall GotY. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
The
fact that we're going to be adding another game to the final GOTY now
(with the 3DS) is probably going to give Bacon less incentive to add a
second multiplatform game to it. Plus, he keeps adding all these bonus categories, too. --- Support Otacon (Metal Gear Solid) for Character Battle IX! http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/1950/banner4otacon.jpg |
If
any of the bonus categories had to be dropped, I would drop "Indie
Game" since it was first introduced with the 2010 GotY polls. I would
drop the iPhone GotY, but SB won't be doing that one. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
It's
really not necessary to turn the GOTY into a mini-tournament,
especially when many of the polls get so few votes on account the utter
weakness of the games in them. We'd be fine with just Wii, PS3, Xbox
360, DS, PSP, and Multiplatform. --- 90s games > 00s games |
January
always seems to have the worse average vote totals out of any month, as
a result of all the GotY polls. For the past several years, that has
been true. Anyways, I tried to come up with some way to determine what
polls are excellent vote draws (capable of bringing in high vote totals)
and what polls are poor vote draws. Here were the top 10 worst vote
draws during the first 8 months of 2011: -50.27% - BEST OF 2010: Best iPhone Game -36.57% - Which unannounced Sony franchise would you most like to see on the Vita? -32.87% - Which classic EA franchise would you most like to see revived? -28.89% - Which scheduled May release are you most looking forward to? -27.12% - BEST OF 2010: Best Downloadable Console Game -26.86% - What do you think Nintendo's big pre-TGS announcement will be? -25.80% - Do you plan to take advantage of the identity theft protection programs offered by Sony? -25.68% - Who do you think will win the Super Bowl? -22.92% - Do you think Sony or Microsoft will announce a new system at E3 this year? -22.68% - What would you most like to see announced for Nintendo's Project Cafe? Using the "Best iPhone Game" as an example, the -50.27% means that poll's vote totals were 50.27% lower than the average vote totals for the month. January 2011 had average vote totals of 51807. The next closest poll to the "Best iPhone Game" only had average vote polls that were 36.57% lower than average for the month. No other poll comes close to the epic bomb by "Best iPhone Game". Only another "Best iPhone Game" poll could actually compete with the lowest vote total since the start of 2007. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
The fact that Grand Theft Auto name branded its way to win that poll shows how weak it was. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |
It even brand-named its way to victory with a port. --- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg Nominate E P O N A. |
can we have a contest please allen? i'm kind of bored. --- Jon Thomson - HKP: 179, 180's: 2, top kill: 152 gg Black Turtle |
The
blank poll option is displaying classic L-Block trends in this poll.
It started out by reaching an all-time high of 39.78% at 12:10 AM.
After that, it has been a freefall in percentage for the entire poll so
far. The blank poll option built up a maximum lead of 699, which happened at 3:26 AM. After that, "1-2 hours" was attempting to pull off a comeback, but it barely did any damage with the night vote. It managed to cut about 90 votes during the next 2 hours. At 5:11 AM, the lead was at 600 and "1-2 hours" was simply unable to break through the 600 barrier for almost 2 1/2 hours. The 600 vote barrier was finally broken at 7:32 AM and it went on to get the lead down to about 560 before there was more stalling for about another 30 minutes. "1-2 hours" broke through the 550 vote barrier at 8:17 AM. And after that, the blank poll option attempted to put up more resistance by keeping the 500 vote barrier alive until it was broken at 9:13 AM. Once that 500 vote barrier was broken, the blank poll option finally ran out of strength to stop "1-2 hours" from going on a huge tear involving stuff like multiple 30 vote cuts. At 12:01 PM, the blank poll option was holding into a 3 vote lead. The lead would finally switch over at 12:16 PM. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Contest Bonus Predictions for the next Character Battle: Blank-Space Poll Glitch > ? Block > L-Block --- I didn't know Zelda games were supposed to be linked. (No pun intended.) -freshmakerrrr Currently playing: Tetris (NES), Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time (PS) |
The
blank poll option may very well give Link a run for his money in the
early vote. Maybe we can get Bacon to run a bonus match that has a
blank poll option as the third option in the poll. Although the blank
poll option wouldn't be a surprise like it was in yesterday's poll.
Also, the blank poll option wouldn't be in the match picture. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Yeah, but it would be Fun with capital F --- I didn't know Zelda games were supposed to be linked. (No pun intended.) -freshmakerrrr Currently playing: Tetris (NES), Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time (PS) |

Last
year, GOTD was announced on September 1st and the contest started on
October 20th. If we are to have any chance of completing a contest
before Christmas arrives, we need to have a contest announcement
sometime this week. The disadvantage of a late contest announcement
this year would be a nomination period that is about one week long
instead of being about two weeks long. Then you'll likely have some
Vote-Ins, which will probably take another 4 to 6 days. The bracket
entry period should be about two weeks long, even if we do get a contest
announcement this week. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
From: -LusterSoldier- | #196 Actually, that sounds pretty advantageous to me. Short nominations periods are great. --- http://i43.tinypic.com/dgwh0.gif http://www.majhost.com/gallery/atukam/OHWD/snownd.gif |
...because... no boring casual Noble 9 nominations? --- I didn't know Zelda games were supposed to be linked. (No pun intended.) -freshmakerrrr Currently playing: Tetris (NES) |
Because nomination periods don't need
to be long. We were able to track nominations a couple years ago, and
the vast majority of nominations were made within the first several
days. You will already have plenty of nominations after a week to make a
solid bracket. Noms only used to be open for 3-4 days way back when. --- http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2011/8/22/2094c2de-bae8-4f5b-9f27-67eaff0aaeaf.jpg |
Shorter nomination periods also mean an advantage to characters B8 likes. Whether that is good or not is up to you. --- http://i54.tinypic.com/2yziu0o.jpg http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png |
