Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1001
If
we have Link in the bracket, I'd suggest putting Link and Cloud in the
same half like in 2003. It's not like people claim that Link didn't
finish 2nd in 2003 just because he wasn't in the final, or that OOT
wasn't #2 in 2004 just because it lost in the quarterfinals. As long as
Cloud takes 2nd in the x-stats, he'll keep his 2nd place, so I don't
think Cloud fans lose much in such an arrangement, and we get a very
interesting opposite half in exchange. Although, if you think Cloud is vulnerable, you could even keep him in the other half and put Sephiroth, Samus, and a Commons division in Link's half. --- 90s games > 00s games |

If
Link's in the bracket that second split is easily the best choice.
Samus gets a crack at Seph, the commons don't muck things up, and Link
doesn't crap on any huge matches. This goes double if we stick Mega with
Seph, as I think we preserve every single big match except

think most people would rather the finals be less of a total waste.
Even if there's no way Link loses to Cloud, it's still better than Link

think Spiderman is bigger than X-Men, although both are not really
necessary, and would probably just LFF Batman. Actually, even without
the LFF, I don't think Batman the franchise will hold up well in that
poll. Probably Star Wars >= Lord of the Rings >>> Harry
Potter > Batman > Simpsons. Which isn't to say Batman the

Yeah,
I think you're right about keeping Cloud in the other half, Kan. Up
until last year it never worked because Cloud was too far ahead, but a
character who only got 52% on Snake is vulnerable and won't ruin his
half of the bracket through being too invincible. --- 90s games > 00s games |
Link
vs. Snake in the finals was fine in 2008. I doubt it's quite that
exciting in 2011. I mean, based on Cloud/Link, he could theoretically

LotR WAY overrated there. Most of its strength comes from the movies. If I had to guess... SW>=Bats>=HP>Simpsons>X-Men>LotR ...Yeah, that looks about right. HP is pretty much the character of the generation, SW and Bats are legendary franchises, Simpsons is omnipresent, and LotR can either LFF SW or get SFF'd by it. X-Men is the odd one out, not strong enough to beat Simpsons but it still beats LotR cleanly. --- Currently playing: League of Legends, Chrono Cross. I'd
be very confident in LOTR beating Harry Potter here. The LOTR series
actually has higher total book sales than HP, if you count the volumes
of LOTR separately, which is fair I think. LOTR sold 150 million copies
of the whole story, so times 3 for 3 volumes is 450 million. The
Hobbit sold another 100 million, and then there are the Silmarillion and
other related works. The total is thus at least 550 million, compared
to 450 million for Harry Potter. The movies I believe had comparable success on a film-by-film basis, though of course HP had 8 movies compared to 3 for LOTR. But I don't think that really makes it more popular (and again, that HP got its book sales through 7 volumes instead of 3 counts against it as a measure of popularity, all else being equal). So, I rather doubt Harry Potter would even win over LOTR on a neutral site like Google or Yahoo. On Gamefaqs it wouldn't be close at all. --- 90s games > 00s games |

A lot of people seem to think it's The Jack Show, but I disagree - Will and Elizabeth have always been really popular with the series' teen fanbase, and everybody loves Barbossa. Heck, even Gibbs has become quite a bit more popular, thanks to Pirates 4 (in which he got his first decent-sized role). I agree that LotR wouldn't do as well as some might think, though. I
wouldn't be shocked even if LOTR beat Star Wars. No LOTR character is
going to come remotely close to Vader, Yoda, Luke, Han, and probably
others, but as a series it has a lot more depth. Star Wars basically
has the original trilogy going for it, and everything else just drags it
down. Of course the original trilogy is a lot of strength in SW's

"shipping" gain a lot of traction precisely with the Harry Potter
fandom, since JKR referenced it in an interview? Sure, LotR is HUGE IRL,
but on the internet, people have grown up with Harry Potter. It's a lot
closer to their hearts than LotR. Since the site demographic is closer
to HP's than LotR's, I figure it can take it with ease, even with the
site getting older. On a site with a lot of teen girls, yeah. The median age of this site is like 22, and it's 94% male. --- 90s games > 00s games |

a lot of these matchups sound pretty boring. Sort of like Tales

feel like I'm in the minority, but I prefer Character Battles to Games
Contests. I guess I just get more personally vested and compassionate
about characters than I do games. Characters are just easier to root

think my issue with characters contests are that a) we've seen them a
million times, more than any other type of contest, and b) I don't have a
character to really get behind who gets put into great matches and goes
places. Ryu/Dante was the best match for me in a long time! It's easier
for me to root for games because I like them a lot more than individual

You
need a really exciting match to make catchphrases good, not good
catchphrases to make an uninteresting match good. LINK HE COME TO TOWN
was perfect for the 2008 final, but there's no sense in saying it more
than a couple times in a first round blowout by Link- at the start and
perhaps if he decimates his opponent with the ASV. --- 90s games > 00s games |

Gamespot contest topic is gone, so I'll just say it here Gamespots contest is a mess. They were supposed to put the brackets up at 12 PM PST today, but theres nothing on the front page, and I had to manually search "sidekick" on the site to even find it, and they haven't updated it since August 23, and the forum for it is down.
