GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 999
We've already seen that MMX has no chance of beating Mario or Link. Anyone with a Nintendo background basically has a 0% chance to win as long as Link is in the bracket though. --- "Hold on a minute! Character Preview Day 1 – Barret Wallace Previous Contest Performance N/A Analysis Since it has been confirmed that we’re getting a contest this year and in an attempt to stir more discussion in the topic I’ve decided to take a more in-depth look at some of the characters that we may see in the future. Barret Wallace from Final Fantasy VII was the winner of the Nomination Rally Tournament held in 2010. He also ended Pokemon’s three contest winning streak by defeating Squirtle. Barret is expected to have decent strength due to being a party member in Final Fantasy VII as the board slowly attempts to give every likeable member a chance in a contest setting. Cid Highwind’s performance in the previous contest will likely be a starting point for bracket makers. Personally I feel that Barret Wallace and Red XIII for that matter would be stronger than Cid Highwind based on my experiences with the game, but at the same time I wouldn’t expect them to crush him in a match. Then again it seems that more people on the board would take Cid Highwind in a match, but the consensus seems to be that they’ll be at around the same tier in strength. The main argument besides RacistFAQs for Barret being significantly weaker than Cid Highwind is the favourite Final Fantasy VII character poll where Barret was not only crushed by the more likeable cast, but he even lost to Yuffie. Ignoring that the poll was taken in 2002 Barret doesn’t exactly have the qualities to being a fan favourite. His moments in the game aren’t as memorable as some characters and his character design losses out to others. Just because you aren’t a fan favourite doesn’t mean you are weak. Barret may not be number one in the eyes of Final Fantasy VII fans, but he still is loved. I feel that Barret will be a worthy winner in the Nomination Rally Tournament. Outside of characters from new games there are only a handful of characters that have never been in a contest that are above the fodder line. Hopefully he’ll have a better fate than Cid Highwind and be put in a more debatable match. --- BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest. |

Strange
idea for a GameSpot contest. I thought a games contest would be more

GameSpot
is doing a Vote-In phase again, like they've done for their past 2
contests. Their Vote-In phase allows you to vote for up to 64
characters, but I haven't heard of like half the characters they've
picked out for the Vote-In phase. So I only used up 37 of my 64 votes. Current top 10 characters (and their vote totals) in the voting: Luigi - 718 Companion Cube - 687 Yoshi - 684 Miles - 652 Diddy Kong - 574 Garrus Vakarian - 571 Epona - 567 Toad - 538 Alyx Vance - 538 Cortana - 538 Epona is doing quite well on GameSpot by being in 7th place in the Vote-In. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Yeah all the guys I voted for are going to make it safely into the top 64. Hell all the ones I recognized are. |
Ugh, this contest looks super boring. I don't care about sidekicks, protagonists are where it's at. Bring on the 2011 Gamefaqs (Fictional?) Character Battle, so we can watch Link crush another raft of characters. --- 90s games > 00s games |

GameSpot's
contest will likely end before our contest starts. GameSpot has a
habit of running multi-day matches and they run multiple matches at the
same time. Apart from round 1 where GameSpot ran half of the matches at
the same time, they ran all of the round 2 matches at the same time and
the same applies for round 3, 4, 5, and 6. Last year, the matches ran for a total of 3, 4, 5, or even 6 days depending on what round it was. The final match was 6 days, but the earlier rounds had either 3, 4, or 5 day matches. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

Another GameSpot contest? LMAO It seems like CNET is much more keen on supporting the GameSpot contests - they happen more often, and they receive a good deal more promotion to boot. GameSpot's been terrible with their contests, yeah. I do enjoy seeing Epona have seventh place so far though, especially with all of these Nintendo characters. She's also beating Navi and Midna within her series (which are #17 and #23), so she's trying to make a statement with this...as best of one as a 64-way poll will allow, anyway. http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/11-sballin/60109712 So... while we all submit our ideas and do not at all encourage others to submit the same (yeah, right), what do we think will be the most common suggestion? B8's will probably be an all fictional video game character contest (could be wrong on that though!) but I think the site will push for an all entrant games contest. --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. Oh snap didn't think of that. GRAH |
Why would you think the site would push for an all-encompassing games contest? --- Want to listen to more video game music every day? Check out the VGMusicoftheDay Youtube Channel sometime! |
If we're going to have a Games Contest, it should be no divisions by generations with FFVII and OoT removed. I suggested the All-Fictional Character Battle, but I put a message there saying that he could limit it to characters who have appeared in video games before and limit their match pics to in-game renditions only. --- http://i.imgur.com/CbfFb.jpg |
If we're going to have a Games Contest, it should be no divisions by generations with FFVII and OoT removed. Pretty close to what I suggested, although I said I personally leaned towards letting OoT and FFVII stay, though I did imply it'd probably be more preferred by most if you took them out and had Winner v FFVII followed by that match's winner v OoT. (Almost suggested a ToC where we just kind of threw MM in as the 3rd entrant, but I don't think we should take MM out of this, unlike Sephiroth and the villains contest, MM is clearly not our solid #3 game.) But really I was more focused on trying to explain that there's just no reason for division-by-generation, and tried to point to Game of the Decade where we had MM and FFX wiping out their "newer" competition, and pretty much going, LttP and SM64 v Fallout 3 and Brawl? what do you think is going to happen. The closer you get to the fodder line the bigger the advantage for newer games probably gets, but I think by the time you reach mid-card status the advantage is pretty much negated. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? GotD (219/384) Melee v FFX |
Yeah,
taking Majora's Mask out wouldn't really be a great idea, but
regardless, it would be the first game the winner faced, so we could see
what it's worth. But since there's a chance that game MAY be LTTP, that would render it worthless as far as contest data is concerned. Also, newer games comprise the largest chunk of the upper half of the x-stats in both contests (From PS2/GCN/Xbox gen on). It's just that there isn't one killer awesome game out of that group. --- "Hold on a minute! That testimony stinks!" "Witness! You can't just say 'Hello' and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!" |
Also no series limitations please! FFVIII v FFX needs to happen. |

unlike Sephiroth and the villains contest, MM is clearly not our solid #3 game.) Yeah, that GotD contest didn't have Link to the Past in it, which would have defeated MM easily. GotD also didn't have games like SMB, SMB3, Mario World, and Mario 64, which also have a chance to defeat MM in a match. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |
Yeah,
I know, I only toyed with the idea because I wasn't sure if Bacon would
have found a ToC format more appealing than a pair of "exhibition"
matches, I don't think there's any reason he should be opposed to them, but any little thing I think could help sway him I was going for. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? GotD (219/384) Melee v FFX |

A
match between LoZ:LttP and LoZ:MM wouldn't provide the most foolproof
information, sure, but I doubt there would be much SFF either. They're
both quite strong yet there's not that much difference in strength,
there's always been a divide in the fanbase about the transition from 2D
to 3D, and LoZ:MM beat LoZ:LttP in IGN's LoZ-themed contest...there's
not much of a chance LoZ:LttP suddenly causes some big anomaly there. --- http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3492/eponaharr.jpg Nominate E P O N A. |

haven't posted in this series of topics for a longass time, but quick
question...is Clinkeroth still so strong on this board because the
voterbase for the contests is aging in general without new blood to vote

who really love ff7/zelda also really love this contest. --- After all, nostalgia is the only reason why anyone thinks Squall/FF8 is good at anything |
