Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 998
We
used to have much bigger mysteries to solve (WDF in 2002, whether
WW-Link mattered in 2003, the SFF from 2004, if the Devil Division was
legit in 2005, how L-Block would look after becoming a champion in
2007...things like that). Nine years into these things though, there
just aren't as many controversies to argue over. Yeah, it's too bad... once we hit 2007 every contest had a gimmick, so now we just blame any inconsistencies on those gimmicks. I'd like to see a traditional 1-on-1, 24-hour character contest again. --- "Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think." |

Part
of that is because Bacon won't just sacrifice a division to give every
debated match. Imagine a division with Vincent, Squall, Tifa, Crono,
etc. Just throw the bottom of the Noble Nine and all the near-elites in a
division. Who cares even if it means we get Zelda vs. Luigi in the

We
know too much about characters, yeah. I feel that there's a lot about
games to discuss and that we don't know, but we need another games
contest before we can contemplate these things too much. --- 90s games > 00s games |

true as soon as SBAllen gives us a games contest that aren't split by

It
may take several contests to answer those questions, as with
characters. And even if it doesn't, the first 1v1 non-generational
games contest would be absolutely amazing. There are many more strong
games in the field than strong characters- we could populate a 64 game
bracket with zero fodder/boring games, and even with a 128 game bracket,
we don't need to have many boring fodder matches as is inevitable with

I think the best contest we could have would be an inter-generational games contest with no time restrictions and with
FFVII and OoT. There's be more than enough interesting and debated
matches going on for them not to be able to ruin too much, and it'd be
interesting to see how they've held up since '08 (and since '04 1v1).

A
big reason why there's less debate now is because we've had 128 entrant
contests for the past 4 years. I know some people don't want to go back
to 64, but if we want there to be any mystery left we might have to.

OOT
and FFVII are more dominant than Link and Cloud. OOT wouldn't go under
60% against anything except FFVII, since all the games that could
potentially breach 40% on it in strength are also Nintendo games that
would get lambasted with SFF. Even with FFVII, there's a good chance it
could face all those strong games vying for #3 and break 60% on them

I'm not sure FF VII break 60% on SSB Brawl/Melee and Majora's mask anymore like it used to? At least not by the time the next game contest comes around. |

only interesting one will be "Got 3DS?", to see how much ownership has
boosted since it was first released about 3 months ago. The other ones

Nope, it's never been used in a character battle. Also, just a few minutes until the first "Got Console?" poll. 3DS had 10.03% ownership on the day of the poll, with another 3.71% saying they would get one within a week from the day the previous poll was run. I just realized that Super Mario 64 is older now than Super Mario Bros. 3 was when we had the original Games Contest. OoT and FFVII were only 6 and 7 years old, respectively, then. 3DS officially finishes at 19.03% ownership. That's an exact 9% improvement from the 10.03% ownership on the launch date. In comparison to the DS, the 3DS started off with a better ownership on the launch date. First 2 DS polls: 11/21/2004 - http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1826 12/27/2004 - http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1862 The DS started off with 8.59% ownership on the launch date (compared to 10.03% for the 3DS) and ownership jumped to 23.47% right after Christmas. The 2004 Christmas poll showed that ownership jumped by 14.47% on that day alone. Even 3 months into the release of the 3DS, and it still has a lower ownership than the DS had after about a month. Also, it says "might" in the poll option, so you can't assume all of those voters would pick up a Vita. I finally compiled a list of game system ownership, so you can see how it changes over time. The list is located here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t6EWb5HYxUqC246FbjQrSwA I did not include "Gaming-quality PC", because ownership for that constantly changes in an up and down rollercoaster. I also did not include polls such as "Got DS Lite?" and "Got DSi XL?", as they contained poll options that made it difficult to figure out the exact ownership of the DS. The same goes for stuff like "Got PSP Go?" and "Got PS3 Slim?". Yeah I'd assume the overlap of "getting vita" and "already owns PSP" would be pretty high. You run this poll with the DS and have a "I might get the 3DS" option and it's going to do even worse probably. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |

By the time this game generation is over with, PS3 may even overtake Wii in ownership. I'm
not so sure if we can say that the Wii is so hated. Brawl, Twilight
Princess, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Mario Kart Wii all appeared to
be stronger in the GotD contest (going by the stats) than their critical
acclaim suggests. So...WHAT HAPPENED, GALAXY??? Oh yeah and coming off of finishing RE4: Separate Ways yesterday, I was honestly left wondering why Ada Wong has only appeared in two contests and looked weak in both of them. Well, there's a character we can discuss! Seriously though, I have a feeling that Ms. Wong may have taken some SFF beatings both times (her "chick appeal" being drained by Samus in '06 and being stuck against two other Capcom characters the following year). I'm not so sure if we can say that the Wii is so hated. The Wii is hated because it lacks HD support, does not have a hard drive, does not have a robust online system like PSN/Xbox Live/Steam, and terrible third party support because of the previous reasons. Interesting to compare this poll to the PSP/Vita one as they're worded similarly. PSP had about a 53% ownership, with an additional 10% who don't own it considering getting the Vita. Right now the Wii has about a 68% ownership, with an additional 5% who don't own it considering getting the Wii-U. I'm thinking Vita looks better as far as horizon broadening potential here on GameFAQs for now at least, but we'll see where the poll ends up. --- No problem! We've
seen both Claire and Ada in one-on-one matches. Claire lost to Kairi,
and Ada barely broke 20% on Samus. Admittedly, Ada boosted a bit from
there when RE4 came out for PS2...and proceeded to lose to pre-OkamiWii
