Here was an interesting topic I saw on a private board:

Today's poll is a Keynesian beauty contest

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keynesian_beauty_contest

I voted "The second one". Looks like I'm right so far!

Would be very interesting to see the results if this poll was ran again tomorrow.

Very interesting link that RockMFR 5 linked to.

I laughed when i saw this poll.

I'm a firm believer in "dat top option," but the way this poll is constructed made me think that "the first one" would be the most popular, even though it's the second option. So i therefore voted for "the second one" which actually turns out to be winning, so i guess a lot more people took a step back and had the same train of thought as I did. "The second one" is actually the 4th option though, and "the fourth one" is doing abysmally.

Argh, this hurts my brain.

Is it strange that I want a poll with only two generic options (Top and Bottom) to see how that turned out? >_>

Dammit!

I chose "the second one" also. It seems to be the trap all the "smart" people took who tried to think it through.

Little did they know all the actual super smart people actually thought of this and took an extra step!

Like me! Oh ho ho ho

No, seriously, I just chose the 4th option because 4 is my favorite number and it has never failed me.

Still good track record!

I'd rather have a poll with two options that both say the same exact thing, just to see which one ends up winning the poll. I think this is what the poll should be:

If this poll has two identical options, which one would you choose?

This option

What we need is to run Link vs. Cloud, every day, for a year. We'll alternate whether Link is the top option or Cloud is the top option, so that we manage to have enough polls to see both arrangements on all the days of the week, in all the months of the year. Of course, even this would not be perfect, as we could never run the ideal polls of having Link on top and Cloud on top on exactly the same day, but it should give us enough data to approximate quite closely the effect of the top option.

The upcoming poll (in about 3 hours from now) will be "Which professional sport do you most closely follow?". That will be an interesting poll, with interesting trends since American Football will bomb the night vote and Soccer will do well in that time period.

Planning on tracking trends? I wonder if the 4th option taking the lead will drag up the 5th option from people who look at the results before voting.

I finally completed my trends and all of the options were pretty static across every single hour of the day. So there weren't really any trends in yesterday's poll.

Today's poll will have definite trends for sure.

This. Also the game did pretty well in the GOTY polls in relation to its abnormally low critical acclaim for the franchise and the fact that a Mario was in the same poll.

...speaking of Other M, what's the weakest game in the Game of the Decade field which would defeat it? We already established that it would win against Shenmue, so what's the next target? Silent Hill 2? Civilization IV? DEUS EX? Hell, could Other M soak up enough anti-votes to break 40% on something like Modern Warfare 2? These are all silly questions, but I felt like it anyway.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare vs. Final Fantasy XIII
Half-Life 2 vs. Shadow of the Colossus

God of War III (far more epic)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (I don't trust RDR)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Final Fantasy XIII (never take a FPS over FF)
Half-Life 2 (but I'm not sure after SotC run in the GotD)
Super Metroid (never played okami so... but not against Metroid)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (I think)
#129 | AxemRedRanger | Posted 6/14/2011 6:01:55 PM | message detail
I agree that RDR isn't trustworthy, but...well, it's against GTA. >_>

I have an awful feeling Chrono Cross could win that match. It shouldn't be the favorite or anything, I'd pick against it even without bias, but it got 33% on Majora's Mask. Symphony of the Night got 33.5% on Mario 64, which would be good, but then it got 26.6% next round despite Yoshi's Island in the poll. (And 27.6% on Chrono Trigger) Add in lol 4-ways and an upset wouldn't surprise me. It might anger or sadden me, but not surprise me.

Okami might have a shot at Super Metroid in a night match. It did get ~42% on Metroid Prime in a night match, and could have boosted marginally from MvC3. Day match or 24 hour match and it loses, though.

Trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tCChV2JMvG5sS8NMLq7J4Mg&gid=1

Baseball did best in the Power Hour and worst in the night vote and early morning vote. Basketball had a good Power Hour and SNV, but had a bad morning vote. Football had a good Power Hour, late morning vote, and ASV/SNV. Football did worst at night and in the early morning. Hockey had a good Power Hour and ASV/SNV, and was worst in the night vote.

Soccer had a terrible Power Hour, ASV, and SNV and dominated the night vote and morning vote. Other was best at night thanks to Australia. "No sports" did best at night and the early morning and did worst in the ASV/SNV.

In yesterday's poll, Football (American) reached a maximum lead of 1339 on Soccer at 3:31 AM. After that point, Soccer managed to cut about 500 votes off that lead to get Football's lead down to 822 at 7:47 AM. After that point, Football gained control again and increased its lead for the rest of the poll.

Canada had 51.37% of all the Hockey votes
The US had 94.23% of all the Football votes
The US had 92.74% of all the Baseball votes
The US had 77.09% of all the Basketball votes

Football and Baseball were almost entirely dependent upon the US for most of its votes. At least Basketball had a decent amount of support (mostly in Asia) outside of the US.

Well one thing is that there is bad to no reception once you leave the main cities.

That might be true, but that's more of an issue farther up north (especially in the 3 territories). I would assume most Canadians at least live close enough to a major city to get decent to good reception. And most Canadians wouldn't be living in the northern part of the main provinces (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec), which is where you would get bad or no reception up there. And a lot of Canada's population is concentrated in the southern part of the country, close to the US border.

Cell phone towers are being built outside the main cities, but those are pretty new so few people have made the switch. Also about 66% of the population lives on 10% of the land while everyone else is scattered over this huge country so it isn't hard to imagine from a business perspective why parts of the country gets no/bad reception.

We also have the problem of cell phones being very expensive due to very few cell phone companies.
