Pikachu not being especially strong in a Pokemon vs. Pokemon match in a specifically Pokemon contest makes sense to me.

Presumably the pokemon fanbase, or at least people still into pokemon, would comprise a much higher percentage of the vote there than in a gamefaqs contest. The reason Pikachu is strong here is that he channels the nostalgia and love this site has for RBY and other media earlier in the franchise due to being the mascot, and everyone here recognizes him. Being in Smash Bros. on a site as crazy about that series as this one is probably helps marginally.

Well, the pokemon fanbase is still in the franchise and is therefore still making memories, and they all know who most pokemon are, nullifying a lot of Pikachu's advantages here. And Pikachu has not been especially prominent in the games lately. They would definitely still vote for him in higher proportions against outside competition, but if it's Pikachu against a liked newer Pokemon, like Salamence or something, the newer pokemon almost certainly does better among them than among gamefaqs users in general.

Perhaps the voters were biased against not fully evolved Pokemon.

I also have a feeling the voters were biased towards the legendary Pokemon, so the top 20 could have quite a lot of legendaries up there.

Who would be the strongest Pokemon from Gen 2? With that remake out, I think that character might have a shot as well.. especially since R/B/Y doesn't seem to be looking as strong as expected in that top 100 list so far

I feel like, out of normal Pokémon, Umbreon or Ampharos should be it. Ampharos is pretty universally liked (or at least not hated), but I feel like it's going to inevitably be Lugia>Ho-oh due to how often those f***ers came up when I was voting. I wouldn't be surprised if Suicune, thanks to Crystal, was up there too.

Lugia, Tyranitar and Typhlosion would probably be the top dogs, I think! Wobbuffet could maybe be a solid psuedo-joke entrant, too.

Venusaur, Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Blastoise, Arcanine, Alakazam, Gengar, Scyther, Jolteon, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Dragonite, Mewtwo and Mew have not shown up yet. Give it some time. RBY might end up with over half of the Top 40 with more in the 1-20 range than 21-40.

Very good work Leon, but I think the spreadsheet would look nicer if all of the information was centered inside of their respective cells. By default, all numbers, percentages, and time/date formats are aligned to the right, while plain text is aligned to the left.

For all of the percentages, they should be formatted as 2 decimal places. This can be accomplished by highlighting the columns with the percentages and clicking the "%" button.

For the contests that use hourly trend charts, the "Time" column would look nicer if stuff like 0:05 was used instead of 0:05:00. You can accomplish this by highlighting the entire "Time" column and clicking on the "123" button, which will give you a dropdown list of different data formats. Look for the "15:59" option shown in this screenshot:

Pokemon on the cover of a "real" Pokemon game that we have not yet seen:

Blastoise
Charizard
Venusaur
Lugia
Ho-Oh
Suicune
Groudon
Kyogre
Rayquaza
Giratina (Granted, Palkia was only 86, so it probably missed this one.)
Zekrom
Reshiram

In other words, everyone except Pikachu, Palkia, and Dialgia.

Aside from what TRE mentioned, I think Snorlax and Gyarados also have a good shot. I would have thought Jigglypuff would be here from Smash and its awesome recurring though not regular appearances in the early anime, but if Pikachu didn't break the top 40 then its chances are poor. Maybe Meowth could leverage his anime appearances into a high position, though, the thing was in pretty much every first season episode.

I concur that Lugia would be the strongest gen 2 poke in a gamefaqs contest, but I'm not sure it would be worth bothering to get it in. People on gamefaqs would recognize it, yeah, but I'm not sure they would care about it. I wouldn't pick it over Mudkip even considering Mudkip should be weaker 1-on-1.

Speaking of which, Mudkip got absolutely robbed last contest:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3691

Scorpion was the best vote-in performer who didn't make it in and Mudkip wasn't far behind him in the same poll despite being leeched to hell. He probably wins that vote-in with ease without Missingno. there to massively suck up both joke and Pokemon votes, even with Jigglypuff still there to weigh him down.

Looks like it's missing the trend charts from the 2006 Series Contest. That was the first contest with a 12:00 AM start time on all matches. The FFVII/OoT bonus match shows percentages for the cells in the "Votes" column. An unintentional side effect of converting the percentages to all have 2 decimal places.

That could be fixed by using the "123" button and choosing "Plain text". Afterwards, you would have to re-input the vote totals for the 7 time periods on that match.

Although it's only 31 matches, so I guess I could get around to it eventually.

Heh, the vote totals for the FFVII/OoT bonus match now have commas in them, which looks ugly. That would be the result of choosing "Normal" from that dropdown list.

The only way to avoid having the commas was to choose "Plain text" instead of "Normal". That should fix the problem without any need to re-input the vote totals manually after choosing "Plain text".

Venusaur
Charizard
Blastoise
Arcanine
Alakazam
Gengar
Gyarados
Starmie
Articuno
Zapdos
Dragonite
Mewtwo
Mew
Entei
Suicune
Tyranitar
Lugia
Ho-oh
Rayquaza
Zekrom

13/20 from RBY. Tyranitar looks like it's going to be the most popular non-legendary, non-RBY Pokemon.

Starmie and Arcanine feel like the weak links in your predictions. It sounds plausible to me that they wouldn't make the top 100 whereas I can't see most of the others you listed failing to do so. Don't really have much in the way of alternatives to guess at, though. Maybe SURPRISE MUDKIP UPSET?

I found a mistake with Leon's trend chart for Link/Cloud/L-Block/Snake.

Your trend chart for that match only adds up to a total of 190811 votes if you add up the vote totals for the PHV, FNV, BSV, DSV, ASV, and SNV. 190811 votes corresponds to the 00:00:12 update on this page:

http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/22?matchnum=2925&num=4

There is one whole hour after the update with 190811 votes. Incase you didn't know, that match was 25 hours long as a result of DST. The clock goes back one hour at 2:00 AM, which is during the FNV. So the extra hour would count towards the FNV, at least that's how I would handle it.

When the DST change messed up the updater, creativename had to manually adjust the timestamps (1 hour forward) on all of the updates that came after the DST change. The match appears to end at 1:00 AM based on the final update, but that's because of the timestamp adjustment.

As a result of the timestamps being adjusted, you would have to use the 07:03:01 update instead of 06:02:38 as the ending point of the FNV. The same idea applies with the other time periods. I took the liberty of creating a corrected version of your trend chart. The corrected version has a significantly lower FNV number for L-Block and a significantly higher BSV number for Link. Here is the corrected version:

Time | Link | Cloud | L-Block | Snake | Votes
EBV | 21.36% | 15.41% | 54.99% | 8.23% | 2453
PHV | 24.93% | 19.07% | 45.40% | 10.60% | 17528
FNV | 27.32% | 24.27% | 35.59% | 12.82% | 36932
BSV | 32.62% | 25.67% | 28.58% | 13.13% | 18200
DSV | 31.31% | 24.38% | 32.26% | 12.05% | 56758
ASV | 30.42% | 25.72% | 31.65% | 12.21% | 55734
SNV | 29.17% | 26.28% | 31.46% | 13.09% | 10208

The following updates were used for creating the above trend chart:

00:05:02, 01:01:11, 07:03:01, 10:03:11, 15:29:12, 23:00:01, and 01:01:02

When I did my trend chart, I had a choice between using 15:29:12 or 15:35:01. I went with 15:29:12 as it was closer to the end of the DSV.

Leon used 00:05:02, 01:01:11, 06:02:38, 09:03:01, 14:34:02, 22:00:02, and 00:00:12 in his trend chart.

My prediction was off by one. I had Starmie and it was Scizor that made the Top 20. It's disappointing to see Starmie fail to make the list at all.

Charizard is number 1 as expected with Mewtwo just behind him. Blastoise has a strong finish in 3rd place. I think the NRT got it wrong when they went with Squirtle. Lugia looks to be a good choice to finally get a 2nd gen Pokemon into the contest. Dragonite, Rayquaza and Zekrom seem too high to me. I think they had an unusual tendency to show up in a lot of matches so maybe they were overrated because of that.

Never would have guessed Scizor would be the one there. Perhaps it's dominance of the late DPP metagame had something to do with it.

Lugia has more strength to it than I would have thought. I suppose it was featured in the second movie, which got a theatrical release and came out while Pokemon was still a fad. Let's get it in.

I don't think we need to see Dragonite, though. >_> Not entirely sure how Dragonite got all the way up to 5th but being a dragon probably helped.

Zekrom is on the box of the most recent pokemon release. Big black thing > big white thing, so it being a good deal stronger than Reshiram makes sense to me.

Rayquaza > Groudon and Kyogre is a little funky, but it probably helped that you can only catch the latter two in 2/3 versions that gen. Plus it's a dragon thing and is caught later so casual fans probably assume it's stronger. Note that Giratina beat out Palkia and Dialga, too.

Entei at 18? The hell? I mean, I guess the slight movie boost could justify it being over Raikou (poor guy as the only legendary dog without movie representation), but bleh. I feel like some of these results are odd though. Rayquaza above Pokémon like Arcanine and Gyarados is kinda weird. I somehow doubt it would do better than either in a contest.

Man, how on earth did Blaziken get such a low ranking?!? I thought he was one of the fan favorites!

Definitely an interesting list, for sure. Why is Moltres always the red-headed step child, though...? :(

Not entirely sure how Dragonite got all the way up to 5th but being a dragon probably helped.

It's because people love Dragonite Dad, obviously!

If we're going to nominate any more Pokemon after/besides Squirtle/Blastoise or Lugia, I'd like to see Gyarados. From RBY, looks awesome, did pretty well in the list, its evolution from Magikarp made it very memorable, and I'd expect Red Gyarados to have been on a lot of people's in-game teams in GSC.

Oh god, the vote totals are terrible on this poll. Less than 100 votes after the first minute.

When a game like LA Noire is dominating the poll, that shows how sad these poll options are.

This is definitely a very weak pack of games, because "L.A. Noire" isn't even on the Top 100 games list despite winning this poll. In fact, only 2 games in this poll are on the Top 100 games list right now.

The funny thing is, F.E.A.R. 3 just got delayed until June, so we get to see its "performance" next month as well!
